Tony Abbott launches TerrorChoices: your frights at work

Hey, I tell you what always works really well: deciding the best way to protect Australians from terrorist attack by removing the very rights and freedoms we’re told the terrorists hate us for.

That’s what Tony “Slow wink” Abbott told Parliament yesterday in a speech that was supposed to galvanise local support for legislation in the fight against terror - namely, ours under the Abbott Government.

"Regrettably for some time to come, the delicate balance between freedom and security may have to shift”, the PM told Parliament. He went onto rationalise that "Australians will have to endure more security than we're used to, and more inconvenience than we would like" as though security agencies have a long tradition of going 'hey, shit’s cool now, here’s all those powers back - we don’t need ‘em, we're good'.

Today the Senate will debate new laws that give greater power to security agencies because rushed legislation always fresh legislation! This is the way legislation should be introduced - with little to no explanation of how these freedoms will apparently protect and not disempower Australian voters.

But it’s ok - we’ve seen how the US Patriot Act (passed in response to actual terrorist attacks) totally helped empower Americans and in no way placed them under excess surveillance, reduced their personal freedoms and either stopped the terrorists or strengthened the US's ability to prosecute them in US (and not military) courts.
