Here's more fodder for the great paper vs. e-book debate.
A new study has found that readers using an e-reader were "significantly" worse than print book readers at remembering when events occurred in a story, The Guardian reports.
The study, which was presented at a conference in Italy in July, gave 50 readers the same Elizabeth George short story to read. Half read on a Kindle and half read a paperback. Afterward the readers were tested on plot, character, objects and settings.
"The Kindle readers performed significantly worse on the plot reconstruction measure, i.e., when they were asked to place 14 events in the correct order," Ann Mangen, a researcher on the study told The Guardian.

I resisted getting a Kindle for a long time but I love mine.  When I go away I need to take at least 5 books, it plays havoc with my luggage allowance and I would always leave my books there Sad

I wouldn't be without mine now, I love it.  I would like a Paperwhite but can't justify the expense when mine is still working fine. Mine wouldn't power up the day before my last holiday, managed to Google the solution or I would have been straight out to buy a new one!  An amazing piece of technology Book Buzz: Study finds people absorb less on e-readers Thumbs37

I too resisted but I have the kindle for travelling (although I sneak in a book or two) and I use it daily for here or email, recipes etc....

but at night in bed munching on a snack its the real thing all the way.....I will NEVER EVER stop reading them. or buying. there is just something so pleasurable in holding a book.I re-read mine all the time.

I believe in the above report but I would like to see it done over a period of time with a variety of books. I think that would show stronger proof.

I know peeps who are totally oldschool and will never convert (you'd be surprised its not just my older patrons) some who will never buy a real book again but the vast majority is a mixture such as I am.

I'm very happy with the ebooks host/delivery system my district uses (you can also get e audio books but man do they use up your battery life) but the one at my old place was horrible both as an administrator and User - far too complicated. luckily the district buys ebooks so I don't have to use my budget on them as they are seriously expensive.

Yep, too old school to change on this, I just love my collection, would feel lost without it, as has been built up over many years.

Is it possible that since e-books are so new, most readers are simply more accustomed to marking their progress through a novel with a bookmark? I'd like to see a study done in several decades, when we have people who grew up with e-books.

Besides portability and lightness (an e-book weighs the same amount as a DNA molecule), this is what I like best about e-books over paper books:

VS.

Book Buzz: Study finds people absorb less on e-readers IBooks-white-on-black

I much prefer white print on black background with no big crease in the middle that makes the lines of text curve, and sometimes disappear into the fold ...

I can see your point Ben, but with a book to me it has far more, its new smell, its presence alone stands testament to the fact others will see it and be interested, none of which are found with an e-book. I have countless books and people are always wishing to borrow them to read and why, because the titles stand out, which you do not have with an e-book. Okay the e-book takes up less space, and is way more environmentally friendly, but I will never give up the view of owing books

I did not physically have enough room for the books I wanted - until I got an e-reader on my phone.  I did not get to spend as much time reading as I wanted until I got the e-reader.
Now I do not have to wonder if I have space before buying a book or exploring a new author.  Now I can read when stood in a queue at the supermarket or waiting for the bus.  It does not matter that the doctors and hospitals no longer do magazines in the waiting rooms.  I always have a book on me.  There is also an unexpected beneficial side effect - cause I always have a phone on me as well.

Personally I prefer Real Books
but there is advantages for the e-reader in terms of storage and portability....

the problem with e-books is they are expensive for what they are. and you cant resell them (not that I do but I buy most of my books second hand Wink )

Apparently the Kindle store has been working on a used market for e-books; I'm just wondering how that would work ... maybe you can't sell it until it's been out for six months or a year so that there's still a big market for the new ones.

I also think a used e-book should have simulated highlighter marks, margin scribbles and food stains Smile

DO NOT ENCOURAGE THAT BEHAVIOUR .....if you want to mark a book then buy it yourself.....grrrrr

I am off to a conference in November (hopefully) so I will investigate. last year I got to talk to some e-vendors and attend some workshops and they were talking about new upcoming products.

libraries whether school, public, academic, law etc.... vs a private person pay a huge amount for a license for an e-book (or audio or music).....and if you want more than 1 "copy" ie to let more than 1 person to read it at the same time it will cost even more. example new James Patterson - I bought a hardback copy for $23.95 library edition (which again are more than private individuals) and the ebooks copy is $63.00 for 1 reader.

2nd had e-trade doesn't really work, gamers have been pushing for it for years.

The only solution is Mass Piracy.. the old publishers (not just books also movies etc) need to be crushed to allow the Neo-Renaissance of free idea exchange to flourish.. there demand for profits are seriously limiting the development of humanity by trying to impose artificial limits on the infinite because the WHOLE economic principle of supply and demand that moralises their 'theft renamed profit' attitude, relies on there being a finite supply of goods and a cost involved with individual unit creation... the digital is infinite and the cost of replication in non-existent therefore the value of the individual copy of any digital work is ZERO. But they want MORE than the hard copy????

VIVA LA REVOLUTION
Protest through Piracy
