The tiger has walked the Earth for two million years. One hundred years ago, there were more than 100,000 in Asia. Now, only just over 3,000 survive in the wild – and their number keeps on declining. In the week that sees the world mark International Tiger Day, The Independent and the World Wildlife Fund are working together to highlight the dangers these iconic animals face and how wildlife experts are desperately trying to save them. Reports will run every day on their present plight, starting with an eyewitness report on the threats braved by conservationists in far eastern Russia by The Independent’s owner Evgeny Lebedev. Our papers, The Independent, i and The Independent on Sunday, as well as our internet sites at independent.co.uk and i100.co.uk, will also be championing the cause. In the past 10 years, 1,000 tigers have been killed by poachers. Unless that trend is reversed they face extinction. The clock is ticking, and ticking fast.
