Aussies In Clear to Evade Geoblocking

http://www.zgeek.com/you-should-bypass-geoblocking-says-report/

"A federal parliamentary committee has recommended that consumers find ways to lawfully evade technology that allows IT companies to charge up to twice as much for their products in Australia.

The Standing Committee on Infrastructure and Communications found that Australian prices for IT products were up to double those charged overseas.

Companies such as Microsoft and Apple use geo-blocking to stop Australian consumers from buying their products online in other countries.

The Committee found Australians paid 42 per cent more, on average, for Adobe software such as Photoshop."

"Just getting three of the tech industry's heavyweights to the parliamentary inquiry was a feat in itself. Adobe, Apple and Microsoft were all invited to attend the inquiry's earlier public hearings voluntarily.

In the end it took a summons to compel the companies to appear. Each had a different reason to explain the pricing disparities.

Adobe said it offered a specialised "bespoke" experience for Australian customers.

Apple blamed local copyright holders for higher prices on its local iTunes store.

Microsoft said its prices were set and customers could vote with their wallets.

Except customers couldn't exactly do that because of geo-blocking.

Whether this new report will be the demise of the location-based artificial online wall is now in the hands of the Federal Government – but it's hard to find many consumers (and voters) who'd agree with the technique."

@ben
yes
We already do, the Gov't literally gives them 5 years if they don't drop the price after that the Gov't produces what we call 'Generic brand' medicine, And you can really tell the difference in price for the exact same medicine often the one produce here is made to a higher standard so it is literally a better product for less than a tenth the price.

So big pharma has got into the habit of lowering the price before the Gov't decides it's too expensive, also our Gov't pays for half or more of the cost of medicine under the PBS so it is in the gov't interests to keep the prices low to keep it's own costs down.
