Opal Cards Big Brother purpos confirmed

Post by veya_victaous on Wed Jul 16, 2014 1:35 am

NSW commuters, you'll feel extra-specially secure and protected shortly once all of the state's public transport swaps over to the new Opal card system. It's quick, it's easy, and your data can be accessed by the police, Centrelink, the ATO and other organisations any time they want. It's just so convenient!

Yes, by using the handy tap-on tap-off system your card can automatically recharge itself via your nominated bank account - just one of the details that can be accessed under the terms and conditions that you're required to accept as part of using the card that is shortly to be the only way to use public transport. It saves all that messy mucking around buying tickets every week or having to produce evidence of just cause to apply through the courts for a warrant.

Victorians and Queenslanders have already long enjoyed the benefits of smartcard transport access and covert surveillance. Especially Queenslanders, as it turns out.

NSW Council for Civil Liberties spokesman Stephen Blanks is especially excited. "There's probably more than 100 agencies that have law enforcement powers which could have access to Opal records under its privacy policy. It's everyone from the RSPCA through to environmental protection agencies and even local councils."

It's worth making clear that "unregistered" Opal cards will be available shortly that can be topped up with cash rather than linked to the bank accounts of specific users, so there's a work around. But where's the thrill in catching a bus without wondering if someone is monitoring your movements without your knowledge?

Like this wasn't obvious, it is only cheaper if you were otherwise buying daily tickets and most commuter buy weekly or quarterly tickets so the Opal works out more expensive.

I don't know I plan to get at least a quarterly in the last available period and then may just jump the trains when that expires. I figure they can afford to keep ticket inspector every where for too long.

Plus the never check tickets at my home stations it's only getting off at work that I'd have to worry about.

I'd lol if they did try and check them at Blacktown, Blacktownites don't like Authority

Cool  ONCE they have replaced eTags and all toll booths are automated, you have to wonder how we outsiders can enter Sydney in the future ?

Harbour Bridge and Tunnel, M4, M5, and those connecting 'ring roads' are all gone or going that way..

AND they make it harder for us "regional" types by reducing rather than expanding the number of outlets selling eTags/OpalCards each year !   Once upon a time, post offices and news agents all sold those things ~ but not any more..

I WONDER if those Sydney-centric bureaucrats are plotting to form a new state or two by stealth ~ slowly making it harder for outsiders to accost their citadels ?    ::lightsab::

@LW
no they want you to buy a card them you have to keep $20 on it which they can of course keep invested in the short term money market in the mean time  Wink

It is so ludicrously corrupt that I would have no problem saying Execute (hang, shoot doesn't matter) the Ministers that allowed it.  ::D:: ::D:: ::D::

Cool

Apart from the corrupt and corporate-friendly pollies, we also see:

THE same sort of government's 'convenient thinking' and short-sightedness also often weighs in ~ as seen in legislation covering such things as E10 petrol, and "energy saving" lightbulbs..

Decisions that inevitably favour the companies over the people; as also regularly seen with mining, GMOs and pesticides, all too often these days.    Suspect

We have a similar thing here in London on busses called an 'oyster' card.

With fares being cheaper to encourage its use, but now they are doing away with cash fares altogether and oyster fares are about the same now as cash payment used to be.

Now if you want to get a bus, you have to find a shop first that does oyster top up, put some money on card and then go for the bus.

Pain in the arse.
