Do you think black singers sometimes sound better and more unique than white singers?

Post by Guest on Sat Jul 05, 2014 12:21 pm

First topic message reminder :

Now, let's not bet into a rammy on this one! Laughing ...

And I know there are fantastic singers either end, take Bryan Adams, truly amazing...

But then take the like of a couple of my other faves....

Sydney Youngblood, Haddaway and Martha Wash...truly outstanding...not to mention Bunny Wailer, Bob Marley etc...

Of course much comes down to personal taste, but I've always thought that black singers have talent in abundance , even without putting in too much effort!

Whad' ya think guys?

Look I'm no fan of JD that's no secret.
I think JD is a suck-up, I'm not even sure how his complete change of personality come about tbh, but this thread was never racist.
In that, I have to defend him.

JD in this instance you've done nothing wrong. Neither have I and neither have the millions of others who can tell whether a singer is back or white.

Thats it Eddie, we're just telling it how it is!!

 Razz

It's absurd.

I don't think any colour is better than any other colour at singing but I'd still say that hands-down, most black singers are better at soul and gospel.

Skunk Anansie was a black singer but sang rock; I didn't like her style much but she wasn't a typical black soul singer.

There are stereotypes for a bloody reason! Because they exist to an extent.

And one final word on this as I'm not into going over and over things:

When a black girl or boy walk on to the stage in the Xfactor, for example, do they sing soul or rock?

We all KNOW what they're going to sing, it's the same thing every year.

Stereotyping themselves somewhat actually.

Are now we are getting onto the points I was making earlier, which clearly you did not read Eddie, here I will help you:

To be honest I think where the confusion is over, is types of music, whether it be soul, opera, rock and roll, hip hop etc, where most people associate a sound as being influenced by cultures black or white. When you have people who are not normally associated with this sound then sing this, people often then associate them as of being for example black, take again rock and roll when it first started, people often associated this is black music, hence why Elvis and others were wrongly assumed to be black. Look at the white soul singers I have presented, again something which was originally associated with black people. This is where confusion occurs, which leads to sterotypes

That is the point thoug you can sometimes Eilzel but this is again more down to types of music, where we associate a sound. Take the examples shown, black opera singers if you did not know them to look at you would assume they are white, many white soul singers if you did not see them, you would assume to be black, white rappers, if you did not see them, you would assume them to be black. So to me it is the different types music that create sounds associated with blacks or whites.

Sorry, I should have added, is that where someone sounds unique, is when they do not sound like the conformed sound to types of music they are singing.

So Eddie, was not having a go, I just detest these types of debates, when based racially.
Out of interest for the benefit of this debate, have you sang types of music which are normally associated with black culture and sounded more black or the sound itself is my point, which associates with that culture when you sing them in your own opinion?
By this, I mean is there a difference to how you sing types of music?

Some people do sound different, but again this will fall down into categories of music, have you not seen the many examples I have shown you, where if you did not see the people, you would wrongly assume based on that type of music they were for example black, if it was RNB, or white if it was Opera, the point you are missing. When a type of music is associated with a culture, people will associate a sound based which groups is associated with that type of Music. Also accents will play a part also in how people sound in singing so a factor will play a part on where they gain the sound of their voice based off who and where they grow up with. There are many factors, I am not saying some white and black people sound different, some do, but the thread asked a very racial question based on who was better as a group.

The point is you have good white and black singers and bad white and black singers, why bring their skin colour into the equation, it just makes for a racial view collectively which group is better.
What next, who is the better public speakers, black or white, who is the better politician, black or white (not based on their ability in each but their skin colour) , such statements are racial, where again we are all one biological race, you are trying to make a racial difference between groups of humans, when for centuries racist people have been stating these same racial arguments. It then leads to who is more intelligent as a group, who is more criminal etc.

previous points for you

Yes if I sing a black song ie "I shot the sheriff" I will sing it in a more soulful and "black" way than if I sang "Hammer to fall" by Queen.

Didge I can find a black man who talks cockney and white man who talks black.

You know exactly what I mean.

This is why I don't really do debates with you, because you'll find ONE of something out of THOUSANDS and make that your case.

No. Stereotypes exist. Sorry.

I rest my case then, you change your voice, to sound  like someone else, not a black person per say, but a sound, soul music or like an artist themselves, which is what many people end up doing.
Hence my point here:

Sorry, I should have added, is that where someone sounds unique, is when they do not sound like the conformed sound to types of music they are singing.

And I agree with want you said a while back Eddie in that the black boy band were rubbish , although I think more often than not that black singers are really good, I also know some are poor...

But quite often we can differentiate between black and white singers just by hearing them.

@Eds; but all black men don't go flat live- JLS didn't, Marcus Collins (think that's his name) and many others didn't.

I don't think wacko Jacko was ever accused of singing flat either...

Anyway you see the point? Maybe some do, same as some whites do, but not all.

If you think any of those above did sing live then that is pretty subjective. JLS were massive, Marcus reached the final and Jackson is arguably the greatest pop star ever- millions of people would say they didn't sing flat.

And again if your argument is only against those that do then that is kind of selective. In fact I'd say black singers do disproportionately better in TV shows that white singers (considering the number of black people in this country). I'mnot citing that as evidence of black people being better singers btw, just that it contrasts sharply with your own assertion here.

And I apologize for misquoting you, but on iphone it isn't easy to check back to the exact wording lol

Hmmm I beg to differ about JLS les.
I have a very good ear and so do a lot of people on Facebook as an example because lots of people said it at the time.
In any case, I actually prefer black people singing soul for instance and and white people singing rock.

It's ok on the misquote btw I'll forgive you seeing as how good you looked on that throne lol

Lets take a step back and Andy posted a video of Asian followed by both of you using the derogative term of yellow man, so I suggest you look back at how you again expose your racism, you realised this to then add this singer to again try to back out of your poor racism to try poorly to worm out of.

Nobody is buying

So it is plain to see what a racist you are joy and all your claims to stand up against it are just a sham, just as your previous homophobia was exposed

Whatever  makes you feel better Didge, but your just talking out of your backside again...where did I call any Asian man yellow?
You never watched the youtube video did you?, or even googles up " Yellowman' ....
He is a Jamaican reggae singer with a yellow tinge to his skin and is known as " Yellowman" , I've liked him since i was 7 years old.
Again you've made a complete arse of yourself with more lies Didge, for you.....
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowman
And I really just can't believe the irony when you say I'm not so sharp , perhaps not, but no less than you.

You just jump right in arse first don't you Didge.

Let me assure you, whatever Andy posted never came up here..his youtube video, even mine hasn't shown at my end,

You've been caught out making arse of yourself, I replied to his comment about a yellow man and I posted  a youtube vid of my own of Yellowman which I still can't actually see.

And Ive never been homophobic, why would I?, I loved  soft cell...I used a few phrases like horse hoof etc , which I shouldn't have, but your the one who has form for this and you were exposed the other night regards to anal sex and derogatory comments about women ...

Your all over the gaff again Didge, and trying to pass off this thread as racist is just complete nonsense and instigating by you again.

Your just trying to cover your back because you never knew there was an artist known by the name of Yellowman, whatever Andy has posted pictures of or videos of hasn't even uploaded here...I would be able to hear it though if it was a video if I tapped the empty square area.

No as seen you did not denounce Andy classing an Asian as yellow and even further expanded by calling him yellowman, thus you never claimed of the singer, as it was a video of two Asians.
You only posted later a video of the artist Yellowman when I again exposed your racism, to try and back out of your poor racist admission
Now we know why you started this racist thread, to try and prove either blacks or whites are inferior or superior, the hallmarks of a racist

I should rephrase that Eddie...

It's sometimes what you don't say that is the problem, you often turn the other way when the less desirable bunch post stuff about blacks and Muslims...then your selective and pull someone up when it's something you pretend to be offended by.

I am not the one covering anything, that is you, as seen and easily proven, so why did you not denounce Andy using yellow to describe Asian people?
Because you agreed with stating Yellowman, as you started this thread to poorly try to prove your illogical racist claims on blacks and whites

You commented on a post with a video with Asian opera singers, you are now saying you can post videos yourself and not see others, sorry, I have heard some porkies in my time, but that beats them all really.
So again you clearly saw Andy posting a video of Asians calling them Yellow, for you to go one worse and call him a yellowman.

Shocking!

It depends in part on the type of music in question imho. Egs. I find the rich tenor of black Motown singers very distinctive. But when Njabalo(sp?) Madlala sings Puccini, I'm only able to tell he's black by the visual on the youtube recording.

I can't even se my own video from here Didge, but I know it's posted , it's very straightforward is a you tube video, I do have difficulty with posting online pics though.

Now...I'm waiting for this evidence where I was in any way racist toward any Asians.

Just as I though Didge, nothing, just lies and smears as usual.

Your a wee bit off the wall aren't you Didge? Laughing

I am not the one throwing abusive words around Joy, that is you, I am pointing out one of my pet hates, racism, where everyone knows how strongly I feel against racism and my feelings were sadly realised even more so not only by the thread which asked people to decide who was superior between whites and blacks, but also how you define Asians as yellow.

I must say it was a shocker!

I do not ignore racism and will show up such poor views for what they are

Thanks LD, he's absolutely miles off, I only wanted the opinion of others and because in my own opinion I prefer black singers and that I think they have better voices...

I was interested in others opinions of this and that quite often I can tell a black singers voice from a white singers voice ...I believe their is a uniqueness in a black singers voice.

Then you do not know him that well, because before he was very racist and homophobic on sky and ADO.
I am all for people changing but this does not bode well to then ask people to make a view on who is either superior or inferior as a group racially.
As I said I will stand against any argument that is used to promote such a poor racial view, we are all one human race and fail to see what difference the colour of a skin makes to people collectively as a group be better than another at singing. Hence all my points that would anyone ask the same on many other areas to claim one group was racially superior to another. I deplore such poor claims. He has noteven backed down from this concept either, so you think I should just acccept such a poor racist concept?

Absolute rubbish, this is just something you and you friends claim to try to score points...and you know it.

I never intended this thread as racist or to imply one skin colour is more superior than another.

You turned this into something else Didge, that was really unfair.

Collective racial claims to a group.
Imagine if someone said whites have better manners than blacks, would people feel the same on such a question?
