Earlier this month, just before the famed creationism debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham, I published an article drawing attention to a stunning piece of evidence in favor of the theory of evolution—one that terrifies creationists. The article received so much attention that a follow-up seemed in order; after all, there's much more where that came from. The evidence in question emerges from the field of genetics, the realm of science that, above all others, makes the case for evolution irrefutable through its ability to quantify the precise degree of interrelatedness between organisms by comparing their genetic codes.

So what does genetics tell us about evolution? Not just that organisms that are more closely related to one another share more DNA—precisely as they should—but also that there is, in effect, a missing link inscribed in the human genetic code. The telltale evidence involves human chromosome 2, which was formed by the ancestral fusion of two smaller chromosomes after we diverged from orangutans, gorillas, and chimpanzees. The image below, which Mother Jones created based on two National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) images of the human and chimpanzee genomes, shows this plainly. As you can see, while our genome is very close to that of chimpanzees overall, chimps have two smaller chromosomes, labeled 2a and 2b by NCBI, where we have simply chromosome 2.

Post by Ben Reilly on Thu Feb 27, 2014 2:40 am

Ken Ham has no idea how science works and admitted in that debate that there is no amount of evidence that could ever cause him to change his position.

This quote from him says it all:

Creationists and evolutionists, Christians and non-Christians, all have the same evidence—the same facts. Think about it: we all have the same earth, the same fossil layers, the same animals and plants, the same stars—the facts are all the same. The difference is in the way we all interpret the facts. And why do we interpret facts differently? Because we start with different presuppositions; these are things that are assumed to be true without being able to prove them. These then become the basis for other conclusions. All reasoning is based on presuppositions (also called axioms). This becomes especially relevant when dealing with past events.

So he believes that "evolutionists" started with a presupposition -- which is the exact opposite of how science really works.

I always get Ham mixed up with the other antipodean creationist idiot, Ray Comfort, he of the infamous banana fallacy:

Behold, the atheists' nightmare. Now if you study a well-made banana, you'll find, on the far side, there are 3 ridges. On the close side, two ridges. If you get your hand ready to grip a banana, you'll find on the far side there are three grooves, on the close side, two grooves. The banana and the hand are perfectly made, one for the other. You'll find the maker of the banana, Almighty God, has made it with a non-slip surface. It has outward indicators of inward contents - green, too early - yellow, just right - black, too late. Now if you go to the top of the banana, you'll find, as with the soda can makers have placed a tab at the top, so God has placed a tab at the top. When you pull the tab, the contents don't squirt in your face. You'll find a wrapper which is biodegradable, has perforations. Notice how gracefully it sits over the human hand. Notice it has a point at the top for ease of entry. It's just the right shape for the human mouth. It's chewy, easy to digest and its even curved toward the face to make the whole process so much easier.

Of course, what he is too stupid to know is that a wild banana is so full of seeds it's virtually inedible:

... and that the bananas we eat were cultivated to be seedless by farmers. Actually, the bananas Comfort is talking about are clones.

there is a dozen mutations just in that pic that we have found between chimp like and Human.

An example of evolution that has occurred in the past 250 years (in Rats)

Evolved in Australia from the common brown rat, which didn't arrive here until white people (approx. 250 years) the only 2 mammals were humans and dingoes, the natives are marsupials.

Like Lurker said we are not debating you because there is no debate you are just uneducated.

@andy

http://genetics.thetech.org/online-exhibits/genes-common

we share DNA we pretty much every living creature

I don’t know Dandelion specifically but it will be under 25% most plants share about 10% to 25% of our DNA. it is the most base DNA that is common to any carbon based life from.
You have to keep in mind that the entire variation in dogs is less than 0.1% of DNA. And Humans pretty much look as similar to a Chimp as a Chihuahua to a St Bernard

I've seen you ask for that over and over and I have to confess, I don't know what you mean by that. Is there any way you could give an example of what such a "list" would look like?

While you're at it, could you succinctly state what you believe are the tenets of the theory of evolution?

HF keeps asking the same question over and over again, so, once more for his edification try this HF:

Postive mutations occur when a change in the sequence of DNA of a gene produces a protein that is more functional then than the wildtype or un-mutated gene. Positive mutations can also turn on genes beneficial to the organism or turn off genes that are harmful to the organism. Positive mutations lead to the formation of new alleles. You can mutate a piece of bacterial DNA that was "turned off" to turn it on- this can make it less suceptible or more susceptible to anti biotics. It would be beneficial to the bacteria, but detrimental to us if we are trying to get rid of it.

Neutral mutations are mutations in DNA that ultimately don't significanlty hurt or benifit the final protein that is made. Maybe a single amino acid was changed- this might not alter the protein function too much.

Negative affects of mutations can be deletions of DNA, insertions, or mismatched base pairs. These are mutations that significantly harm the organism. Sometimes these cause a vital gene to be turned off, deleted, or altered so that the protein is no longer functional. This is harmful if it's a protein that's necessary for the function of the organism. A lot of pesticides and herbicides target the species by blocking a protein from being made by altering (mutating) the DNA. Some antibiotics work by blocking DNA synthesis or Protein synthesis in the bacteria, causing it to die. If the bacteria mutates to no longer need the specific protein, then the antibiotic becomes useless.

I think HF only listens to other conservative religious authorities when it comes to the topic of evolution -- which is a lot like listening to only Marxists when it comes to the topic of capitalism ...
