(CNN)Physics centers essentially on four forces that control our known, visible universe, governing everything from the production of heat in the sun to the way your laptop works. They are gravity, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force, and the strong force.

Physicist Attila Krasznahorkay, right, works with a fellow researcher at the Institute for Nuclear Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

New research may be leading us closer to one more.
Scientists at the Institute for Nuclear Research at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Atomki) have posted findings showing what could be an example of that fifth force at work.

The scientists were closely watching how an excited helium atom emitted light as it decayed. The particles split at an unusual angle -- 115 degrees -- which couldn't be explained by known physics.
The study's lead scientist, Attila Krasznahorkay, told CNN that this was the second time his team had detected a new particle, which they call X17, because they calculated its mass at 17 megaelectronvolts.
"X17 could be a particle, which connects our visible world with the dark matter," he said in an email.
Jonathan Feng, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California at Irvine told CNN he's been following the Hungarian team's work for years, and believes its research is shaping up to be a game changer.
If these results can be replicated, "this would be a no-brainer Nobel Prize," he said.

This could be a landmark moment in our understanding of the physical world.

I am following element 115, or what is known as Moscovium. It displaces matter, and so may be the answer to motion. Put everything that is before you, behind you, in an instant, and you have motion without any inertia. You are simply transposing states of affairs.

Imagine going to Mars by simply placing all of that distance (space) behind you.

Arrow

I've come across a couple of articles, and a YouTube mention or two, of this "Fifth Force" over the past year or two..

Like it says in the O/P, this research project has been underway for a few years.

While on the subject, it is completely unknown what the nature of gravity is.  Relativity describes how it works, but it doesn't define what causes it.

It is the weakest of all forces.  A tiny speck of electromagnetism, like the magnet on your refrigerator door, can defeat it.  Yet it controls the orbits of planets and other bodies.

Some have posited that in an existence of parallel universes, it is a force bleeding from another universe.  https://www.livescience.com/37115-what-is-gravity.html

It may be that Moscovium and a new force are related.  It is possible to move mass with the existing forces.  But it would take a new force to 'displace' an object of mass (ie, make it disappear from in front of you, and reappear behind you).

This is essential to space travel, as such travel is inefficient to impossible by convention (present) means; it would take decades simply to break out of the solar system.  Displacement, by contrast, would simply mean placing that mass/distance from in front of you, to the back, and in an instant you are there.

As you are not moving yourself, but other things in the time/space existence, inertia is not a problem.

Hahaha, it's a pretty mind-blowing concept, but that's the idea -- instead of moving through space, move space around you! I believe NASA even has an on-paper concept engine that would work if we make a few major scientific breakthroughs.

Same here, old boy. All I need to know about this gravity stuff is that if you add enough sauteed onions to a couple of tablespoons of Bisto you get an onion gravity that is of sufficient strength to complement a well cooked Toad-in-the-Hole.
