Counties in Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, Arizona, and Texas became part of a growing "Second Amendment sanctuary" movement this month.

The phrase "Second Amendment sanctuary" is an umbrella term used to describe a jurisdiction that passes a resolution declaring that restrictive gun control laws another legislative body passes are unconstitutional and will not be enforced there. The concept is an adaptation of the immigration "sanctuary city" movement, in which some cities and counties (and now whole states) generally decline to ask residents about their immigration status or assist the federal government in enforcing immigration laws. The resolutions can vary, but generally, Second Amendment sanctuaries refuse to dedicate resources to enforcing things like "red flag" laws and bans on certain weapons.

Did the formation of sanctuary cities for immigration purposes lead to sanctuary cities for federal gun laws?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out, since there is a precedent for local government not enforcing federal laws in terms of immigration and marijuana.

Different kind of question entirely.  Listen, any constitutional proscription is against that state's ability to pass a law.  So...

Sanctuary city in immigration, means that the state police forces cannot be used to enforce federal law.

Second amendment sanctuary is meaningless, because the state always has the option to not pass any law restricting guns.  Who needs sanctuary when you are the one and the same to determine the law?

States that want to preserve gun rights do not even have jurisdiction in other states, so the question never comes up.  It's, like, mind yer own fuooking business.

Ridiculous, illogical idea.

The key word here is "counties." I'd wager most of these places have no more than a few thousand residents.

You don't describe places in county-wide terms unless you don't actually have places populous enough to call cities.

For the record, I'm all for letting bumpkins play with their guns in the sticks.

The link clearly explains that it has happened at the state, county and city level.

Counties have a system of government, just like a city or a state.

But at least you're open minded enough to let the "bumpkins" do what they want.

Well, the appropriately named Effingham County, Illinois has a *county-wide* population of just 34,242, and they counted each and every damn-last one of 'em.

Seems typical of the gun-worship-safe-space movement -- where the only trigger is on your metal penis!

I see.  So it's like the FLDS, who pass laws harboring their plural and paedophile marriages.

However sanctuary jurisdictions cannot stop the state authorities from enforcing their (state) laws...even in their local jurisdictions.  All that the sanctuary cities can say is, We won't help them.

These activities are most often policed by state Fish & Game authorities, anyway.  So I don't reckon it will make much difference.  It's just a political statement.

Well that's like one county.  And what's your point? Are  "bumpkins" a less advanced species compared to suburbanites?

Dude, you live in the 13th largest city in America.

Yup, and that doesn't make me more sophisticated than someone living outside of Dimebox or Turkey.

Razz

Just goes to show how messed up your constitution is...

Down here in Downunderland,  the Federal government controls who has access to what kinds of weapons, (and what kinds of weapons can even be imported, and allowed onto the market..)  while the States are in charge of enforcing the rules, licensing the shooters, regulating who has access to various types of guns..

Local councils don't get a look in, apart from where gun shops, shooting ranges and pistols clubs are located, and how they are built, secured, etc.
