Two thirds of millennials favour “strong leaders who do not have to bother with parliament”, according to a poll revealing a sharp rejection of liberal principles.

The report by Onward, the centre-right think tank, found that 66 per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds favour ‘strongman’ leaders while 26 per cent believe democracy is a bad way to run the country - and 36 per cent would support army rule.

Uncovering a sea change in political attitudes, nearly two to one voters said they wanted a society that “focuses on giving people more security” (65 per cent), rather than one that “focuses on giving people more freedom” (35 per cent).

Why am i not surprised, that people are being drawn to authoritarianism?
As I said, on the other debate yesterday. That the similarities with the 1920's and 1930's in sadly uncanny with todays polarisations between the left and right

1930s Germany and Italy 'capitulate to the fascists' mindset, all over again...

Where did they poll their sample of ultra-conservative braindead snowflakes and bullies-in-waiting ???

Their local BNP and EDL hangouts, perhaps ?

It would be interesting to see which political view those who voted in this poll have. Will have to find the study and post it up

sunny

I reckon if they ran a similar poll around here, half the local millenials would tell those pollsters to bugger off with their politicking...

Just so long as they were left alone to go fishing, surfing or watch the footie..

My thoughts exactly, didge.  Surely they have cross-tab'ed this issue with political affiliation.  They should post that.  A lot of these polls just have a tiny footnote at the end, saying, ...unfortunately, the group polled were stationed on a military base.  WTF?

I've lost a lot of faith in polls after the 2016 election in the US.  It is clear that there is a problem with respondents giving mock or false responses.  Whether they are ashamed of their own vote, or resent the intrusion of a pollster, polls are severely lacking in veracity.

Two thirds of Londoners support the idea of Britain having a “strongman” leader who does not have to bother with parliament according to a new survey, the largest percentage found in any part of the country.

The same survey also found that Londoners are more likely than people elsewhere in Britain to favour the country being ruled by the army, although this was the view of a 42% minority.

At the same time, Londoners emerged from the survey as the most supportive of “a democratic political system”, with 87% expressing that view and as the only group that does not feel that Britain has moved significantly away from it culturally or economically in the last decade, in striking contrast with the rest of the country.

The findings form part of a nationwide poll of over 5,000 people conducted by Hanbury Strategy for centre-right think tank Onward into “the politics of belonging” within a shifting national political loyalties landscape.
