Idea

One slight error with the thread title here...

De Gaulle wasn't a "'World War II' hero"..

He spent WWII in England and Scotland  --  only returning to France after the Americans had liberated Paris. A shining example of a commander "leading from the rear" -- some 300+ miles to the rear..

Generale De Gaulle had already made his reputation as a "war hero" in earlier skirmishes, well before the outbreak of WWII...

Indeed, de Gaulle was unknown world-wide until he came back to France after the war. The Vichy French ruled France during the war.

Most Americans and Canadians remember de Galle primarily for his coming to Canada in the late 60's and shouting vive le quebec libre!

Wiki wrote:"'Vive le Québec libre!' was a controversial phrase in a speech delivered by President Charles de Gaulle of France on July 24, 1967, during an official visit to Canada under the pretext of attending Expo 67 in Montreal, Quebec."

Not likely to endear him to people on this side of the pond.
