Countering science denialism. Arguing with the anti-vaxxers/flat earthers/climate change deniers may feel futile, but research just published in Nature Human Behaviour suggests that it’s actually worth it and can be effective.

Philipp Schmid and Cornelia Betsch of the University of Erfurt in Germany conducted six experiments, online with 1,773 subjects, to see how to “counter arguments of denial at the very moment that they reach an audience, that is, rebutting deniers in public discussions.” These discussions may take place on social media or TV. “Science advocates” have often been reluctant to enter into these discussions at all, worrying they’ll do more harm than good. Here’s what Schmid and Betsch tested, per a write-up of their research by Sander van der Linden, also published in Nature:

All participants were first exposed to an interview with a science denier. Afterwards, they were randomly assigned to a topic-based rebuttal, a technique-based rebuttal or both. A topic-based rebuttal presented the reader with scientific facts countering the misinformation, and the technique-based rebuttal exposed the logical fallacies in the deniers’ persuasion technique. Thus, depending the exact condition, a science advocate was either present or absent and (if present) responded to the denier using a topic-based rebuttal, a technique-based rebuttal or a combination of both approaches. Attitudes towards vaccines and intentions to vaccinate were measured both before and after exposure. Attitudes and intentions to mitigate climate change were measured in the same way.

Basketball

I find it much easier, and more convenient -- if less satisfying at the end of the day -- to simply tell those anti-science denialist dolts like smelly', Tommy, Deano and Maddog what a clueless bunch of corporate suckup moronic snowflakes they are...

Then move on to something else..

this is how much people believe in the myth of climate change

Leaving the EU is ‘more vital than climate change’ says poll as 36 per cent of voters claim Brexit is the most important political issue

Resolving Brexit should be the Government’s number-one priority – and is more important to voters than issues such as climate change, according to the results of a new survey.

Thirty-six per cent of people questioned by pollsters Opinium identified Brexit as the most important issue facing politicians.

MPs have so far been unable to reach a majority in the House of Commons to break the deadlock surrounding our departure from the EU – yet last month, they found enough common ground to declare a ‘climate emergency’.

Climate change came third in the list of priorities voters identified for the Government – 11 per cent mentioned it – while in second place was ‘tackling poverty’ on 12 per cent.

Most science deniers just want to believe whatever makes them feel good, thus, global warming isn't real, the various human "races" are truly different from one another, vaccination is a conspiracy, etc.

No one says global warming isn't real

Climate change or whatever you want to call it is an entirely naturally occurring event, the "science" which you seem to love so much proves conclusively that the earth has been both hotter and colder than it is now, so the idea that human industrialisation is contributing or responsible is debunked BY THE SCIENCE

funny thing is that the climate change head bangers like yourself are the ones denying the science because it doesn't support your lunatic theories about cows farting being responsible for climate change.

Plenty of people, including Tommy, say there's been no warming. And I've never claimed the world hasn't been extremely hot or cold before.

The difference is that long ago, because these extremes were caused by nature, the warming or cooling was much, much slower than the warming we've been seeing for the past century or so, allowing life time to adapt.

Now, science that can literally be replicated and proven by a primary-school student shows that the CO2 we're adding to the atmosphere is warming the planet, much more rapidly than the planet has ever been warmed before.

No warming relative to the earth's history.

If the earth has been hotter than it is now then until we breach that top temperature we can't say the earth is warming up.

Allow me to explain for your dumbass

My cpu could hit 70c under 100% load, since I've built custom loop it won't even touch 50c under the same load, that's a 20c drop from before

So at idle it's about 30c if I put it under load at it reaches a about the 40c mark I can't really say its heating up becasue even though its hotter than at idle it's still 30c lower than its highest recorded temperature

If it ever hit the 80c mark I could then say its "heating up" because it's hotter than its ever been before but still safe since its 20c from its thermal throttling point, so even at 80 it still has 20c of headroom before things get problematic.

So treating the earth like my cpu we are sitting comfortably below its max recorded temperature well within its safe operating range.

As for the rapidly heating up idea, that's nonsense because since this climate change nonsense started there have been several doomsday dates that predicted catastrophe if we don't do x y or z. Each time those "scientific" dates have come and gone and no catastrophe.

So forgive me for not being taken in by a "science" that gets everything so wrong and relies on vague insinuations and gappy information as its base

Tell me Ben, how much faster is the earth heating up than before???

What happens if it doesn't stop??

How much exactly is contributed by fossil feuls and how much is natural??

Surely the "science" has these answers???

You really know and understand just how dumb smelly is when it comes to science ha ha

Thanks smelly, best laugh I have had all day Razz
know how ast the earth is heating up. Why not look at the mass of data on this.

This is why Ben, its important to contionue to show smelly the scientific data, bnut the problem is smelly refuses to actually even look at this. Like with his religious beliefs, he goes off faith to counter science

It does, and they're all out there for you to find. If you're truly open-minded, you'll find it, read it and decide for yourself whether you believe it.

If you aren't, you really shouldn't be in a debate about it, because you're just a broken record, making fun of people who don't agree with your opinion.

its always the same with you lot, its a circle, when you are challanged and question you cant answer and say "go google it" when i google it and find no answers you say "youre a science denier" its the perfect get out clause

and i dont care if people dont agree with my opinion, im just making fun of them becasue they believe in a man made hoax created by people who have made a fuck ton of money from your gullibility

in this scenario you lot are the bible basher preaching god and im the athiest

I'm not wasting my time finding you links you could find yourself.

But I'll give you this advice: you have to start with questions, not an answer -- "Is global warming happening?" "If so, what causes it?" "What are the mechanisms through which the planet warms?"

You can't start from the default position that it's a hoax, any more than I started from the default position that it's real.

That's the only way to approach any topic with an open mind, isn't it?

i did ask you questions, you ran away

the science i trust is from core drillings proving catergorically that the earth has been colder and hotter than it is now, this for me proves conclusively and scientifically that climate change is a natural function of the earth.

what i see is that the natural cycle of each year occurs unchecked, my tree is producing fruit, the birds fly and singing and the bees buzz along quite happily, this has been happening for all the years of my life and i have seen no change in any of it.

i do not see the catastrophe you headbangers claim is already happening, what i do see is fakes and frauds preaching climate change but living the very lifestyle they cliam is harmful to the environment.

when people like al gore warn about rising ocean levels but then buys a beachfront property the alarm bells start ringing, when i then see that al gore has investments linked to climate change which have given him generous returns making him perosnally a millioniare several times over i have to wonder what his true motivations are.

you have people on your side of the argument seriously saying that "toxic mascualinity" is responsible for global warming or cow farts are responsible for global warming or eating meat is responsible, is this what you classify as science?? eat meat = global warming?? i say that classifies as a piss take dreamed up by a demented mind.

headbangers like you want to ignore these inconvenient truths because they cannot be explained away, instead you simply say "because science proves it"

science can be bought

if everyone involved is paid to tell the same lie it doesnt make it true.

i asked a basic question - what percentage of warming is due to human interference and what is natural , your response was to tell me t o google it

thats the typical response of someone who has bought into something without fully knowing what it involves.

lefties always accuse others of racism or whatever when they are losing control of the discussion because they know its effectivness in shutting down debate, climate change cultists adopt a similar strategy with the whole "science proves it", science is the stronest qualifier they can think of because anyone who denies climate change is defacto in denial of science, but when pressed on the issue of the scientific proof through questions, they do what you do and say "im not here to do your research for you"

i dont need to google it because as far as im concerned the core drillings are all the scientific proof i need that its natural, i dont believe that man is contributing anything to global warming therefore why would i research something i dont believe is happening?? the same way i dont need to research whether the earth is flat or not, its not something i believe in, nor is it something that the flat earthers "science" will convince me of.

if you want to believe that its entirely man made then by all means, go find yourself a cave to live in, dress yourself in hessian and eat lentils till end of your days but dont sit there and preach to me about it from your man made house with your man made electricity and your man made internet about it generating a "carbon footprint"

if you arent willing to live the lifestyle of technological austerity that you want others to live then expect me to.

Smelly, the information is out there, you can find it. I'm not wasting my time, since I doubt the sincerity of your curiosity.

I also don't think we all need to live in caves, as I've told you before. We just need clean sources of energy. At the most, we're going to need to start driving electric cars.

I'm convinced by the evidence that global warming is happening and that we're playing a crucial role. I would never advocate for a solution that nobody would ever adopt -- why would I?

im sure it is, but why would i want to investigate something i dont believe in???

the thing is that its a natural cycle, you say its happening faster than before?? so what?? who cares?? whats gonna happen??

what exactly is it that you are so scared of?? youre acting like the end of the world is imminent, seriously??? whats the world going to look like in 50 years if we carry on as we are??

the end of all life?? is that really what you think will happen??

whats the new end date for this tragedy?? 50 years?? 100 years??

explain the big emergency to me because i just dont see it, and dont run away and hide behind "the science" explain it to me

what the problem with the earth going through its heat up cycle?? who cares if humans are helping it along ever so slightly??

its not like the earth is trying to cool down and humans are somehow preventing it from its natural cooling cycle and forcing it in to a heat cycle instead

A - we wouldnt be able to do that and B - see A

Shouldn't you challenge your own beliefs? If a lot of people are saying something is real, shouldn't you take an objective look at it before you dismiss it?

Here's what I think. It's going to gradually get worse over the next century or so. Coastal areas, home to most of the people on the planet, are going to be submerged, and that, along with the hottest areas of the world right now becoming uninhabitable, will lead to massive refugee crises.

Diseases that used to be confined to the tropics will spread toward the poles, leading to epidemics. Europeans will need malaria shots.

Land that used to yield crops will dry up, leading to food crises. Wars will erupt over resources that right now are bought, not won -- wheat, corn, etc.

Animal species will continue to die off at the current rapid rate, leading to a world without many of the animals we grew up learning about.

Trees, which are notoriously slow at migration, will die, many of them in rampant wildfires.

Hurricanes and other violent storm systems will become far more frequent.

I do think humanity will survive in the long term, if only because the population will be greatly diminished. I think the survivors will learn to live more sustainable lives.

But is that the future we want for our grandchildren and their children, etc.? Especially when we could change it, with a little willpower.

If you truly are open enough to read some material on the human contribution to global warming, let me know and I'll send you some good information.

But if you're just going to go on about Al Gore and celebrities, and throw me the usual bullshit arguments posted a billion times by climate change deniers who clearly don't know what they're talking about, then please don't waste my time.

OK so you think that will happen because of the accelerated rate of warming due to human interference or is that an unavoidable byproduct of global warming in general???

Many of the things you Believe will happen are already happening and its not through global warming, diseases for example

Many of those diseases long since extinct in the west have been imported through mass immigration

we already have an immigration crisis due to unstable governments

Wars already ravage the world contributing to the refugee crisis.

Animals teeter on extinction through poaching and habitat destruction and pollution

Hurricanes and storms etc already occur, if the weakest hurricane rips the roof of your house off and causes mass destruction then a stronger hurricane will do the same and either way you're fucked so who cares if one hurricane is worse than another??? Either way you have no roof or house or neighbourhood.

You're spinning some horror story to me and I'm thinking, "wars, disease, death and distruction? is it Wednesday already??"

Basically more of the same, but what you forget is that nature will correct itself, for areas that become uninhabitable others will yield crops, England used to be the perfect climate for grapes and wine.

If 20 miles of coastal region dissappears, guess what?? The new coastal line is now 20 miles inland and people will still live there just 20 miles dislocated and somewhere else the coastal line will be 20 miles out to sea.

Everything that used to be land was under water at one stage, the highest mountains are under the ocean. The what you say won't be the world our children or grandchildren or even greater great grandchildren will inherit, nature doesn't move that quick and nothing man does could influence nature to such an extent

I think it will get much worse, and I think humankind is to blame. Again, if you want some stuff to read that backs up what I say and that I think comes from objective sources, I'll link to it. If not, no skin off my back.

To be honest Ben I'm not that bothered, you're convinced, I'm convinced.

I'll crack on living my life as I do, I'm not about to start worrying about something I don't believe can be stopped or changed.

Bear this in mind, if we start down the road you want us to it will cost us money, that means more taxes and more draconian measures about our energy consumption and general lifestyles.

I can't afford a brand new 30k electric car, are you going to foot the bill?? No I didn't think so. Which means I'm the one who is getting fucked over for your beliefs.

Maybe if you and the rest of the head bangers were forced to foot the bill alone for your pipedreams you might be less inclined to believe them, but no invariably its people like me who can't afford it are the ones getting screwed over and have to make huge changes while the super rich get to crack on as normal.

Don't come crying when you find yourself in a mountain of debt to sustain the climate change fantasy

I actually think tax incentives (breaks) are going to be key to solving climate change -- encouraging energy companies to develop their green energy initiatives and automakers to build more electric cars, along with making those cars more affordable. I'm certainly in no position to take on a lot of expense, but neither are most people in the world, so again -- solutions that actually work.

I'm closing the laptop soon, but it was good to have a civil conversation with you.

Green energy solutions already exist, big petrol companies have bought up all the inventions and blue prints for sustainable energy have developed them and are ready to deploy them as and when.

Fosssil feul however has not yet run dry which means, more of the same until its dry.

Pharmaceuticals is the same thing, it's more lucrative to sell treatments than cures.

Tax breaks for big petrol will have to come from higher tax rates for the working Joe who will see zero benefit from going green, and going green will have to be enforced with penalties and fines for offenders.

Again ordinary folks getting hammered.

Not any more hammered than they already are, watching the likes of Wal-Mart and Amazon enjoy tax-free entry into their communities because of the desire for the jobs they'll bring along. Only instead of just jobs at the new green energy production facilities (wind farms, charging stations, etc.), they'll also be bringing a cleaner planet.

Used all-electric cars can be had in Essex for under £10,000 -- the Hackney cabs are even going all-electric. In Texas, you can get a Prius made within the past decade for $5,000 or less. No excuse there.

And it does appear the world is running out of oil -- at least the kind that used to spray into the air when someone breached a reserve. If it wasn't becoming more scarce, we wouldn't see oil companies drilling hundreds of miles off shore, we wouldn't see frakking, we wouldn't see oil companies demanding to drill in protected lands, and we wouldn't see anybody trying to extract oil from bituminous sands.

You can see from their actions that the big energy companies know oil is running out. Do you think countries like Sweden learned how to run largely on the energy from garbage just to be nice? Of course not. It's survival.
