US vs. England Empty US vs. England

Post by Original Quill on Mon Jul 01, 2019 6:05 pm

After rapidly kicking the keisters of Spain and France, the US women's World Cup team meets England tomorrow.

Having just passed the toughest test to date against host France, here comes another big one for the US team, against England. With a mixture of lineups but the constant 4-3-3 formation, the U.S. is 5-0-0 in the cup and hasn't even trailed.

My bet is Megan Rapinoe scores two early goals, followed by one or two more by Alex Morgan before half.  The main strength of the world champions is starting early and fast. In every World Cup game at this point, the U.S. has scored by the 12th minute. Those quick starts have allowed the champions to play with enthusiasm and confidence, and having never trailed means this team really has never been in desperation mode.

England is the second best team remaining at the World Cup, so winning this one would make the champions clear favorites. It's going to be a physical game of few goals, but based on recent form, the U.S. is the favorite and rightfully showed.

I'm just bored to wracking sobs with the whole bloody thing, including the BBC's elevation to the status of a major news item every flick of the ubiquitous feminine pony tail or extension of the the absently hairy and knobbly-kneed leg.

Even two whole weeks of excruciatingly boring Wimbledon with strawberries, cream and obligatory eye-candy wearing as little as possible apart from sunglasses rendered totally ineffective by being located on the top of the head is a blessed relief.......

The women's football is more entertaining than watching croquet or fox hunting.
But WHY don't they swap shirts afterwards?

Meh...athletic support isn't all that appealing. Would a woman find an unwashed jock strap all that sexy?

US vs. England 2300614393

I'm backing the USA there as well...

After seeing the Euro-centric crooked referee'ing that saw the lowly ranked cheats from Norway defeat the Aussies, and following on from a littany of bad and suspect calls from obviously corrupt officials against non-Euro' countries throughout the competition..

I would back any outsiders against those Eurotrash cheats.

I reckon Fred and nicko's sporting preferences would lean more towards the "huntin', shootin' and fishin'" side of things..

With only the occasional diversion to watch real men playing with their balls on the soccer and rugby fields, and maybe the odd county cricket game.

Rather than watch a bunch of Wolfie's "real men" flaunting their silly hairstyles and either spitting on the pitch or hugging and drooling over each other like customers at a Julian Clarey Tupperware party, I played pretty rough rugby at school and in the RAF and followed motor racing closely because we had a Formula 1 driver in the family.

I've never hunted, regarding horses as being dangerous at both ends and uncomfortable in the middle and I always viewed fishing as being the equivalent of watching paint dry. Or a snooker tournament.

And as for croquet, I prefer to leave that to Leftie politicians like John Prescott.

Can't deny I like a spot of shooting though...a pretty obligatory occupation on a farm inhabited by voracious wood pigeons.

Yep, and now for the next decade we'll have endless TV coverage of replays, replays of replays, replays of replays of replays and an even more obscene salary courtesy of TV licence payers for Gary Lineker to bore the shit out of us droning on about England's almost finest hour.

Fred, talking about Woodies, over the years I'v shot a few thousand. There's a small Wood over a road from me where several dozen roost at night and I used to take a few as they came in to roost. One winter I saw them huddled in the tree's and thought ,"they are starving",so I bought a sack of Maize and threw some on my front garden. They now come every day to feed, never thought I'd be keeping Woodies alive , but happy to do so!

Thx.  Megan Rapinoe didn't even play due to injury, but her replacement, Christen Press, played a hell of a game...and kicked the first goal, as Megan usually does.  It was a nail-biter, as the US goalie Alyssa Naeher, at 2-1, had to fend off a last second penalty kick (and a damn good try, too).

It was probably the real championship game.  We'll have the Dutch for dessert.

1.  I'm not a great fan of cricket myself, either,  only seeing the reports on the news...

2.  Rugby Union was (and still is..) the leading 'traditional' football code at Hawkesbury Ag' College (University of Western Sydney) --  though I only played in a couple of inter-year 'friendlies' (not being able to play contact sports seriously when I was younger, due to being born with a congentital dislocated hip, the risks were simply too high..), I still managed to see many of their home games;

3.  Shooting ?  I learnt to shoot "safely" in the Army Reserves (16th Transport Sqdn Adamstown..) back in the 1980s.  Haven't had any reason to go shootin' since --  I much prefer Archery as a sport;

4.  Fishin'  :  haven't been much into fishing myself, either --  living close to the lake and coast, though, I still know plenty of keen fishermen, including my brother and my late father.  Every second yard around this neighbourhood seems to have some boat/canoes/kayaks, or combinations thereof, parked  in them as well..
