Man survives bow and arrow attack by deflecting missile with his phone

Post by phildidge on Thu Mar 14, 2019 8:23 pm

A man in Australia survived a bow and arrow attack after he attempted to photograph the assailant with a phone, which blocked the arrow.

Police said the 43-year-old man had driven to his home in Nimbin, a town in New South Wales, and discovered a man on his property who was armed with a bow and arrow.

The attacker then fired an arrow but it hit the resident’s smartphone and pierced it. The phone smashed into the resident’s chin and caused a small cut but did not require medical treatment.

Police later arrived and arrested the attacker, who was aged 39. The resident apparently knew the attacker.

The man was charged with intent to commit an indictable offence, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage. He was released on conditional bail and will face court on April 15.

obviously not a very powerful bow....

or not fully drawn

my replica war bow would have stuffed 37 inches of beech through that phone...through him and 4 inches into an oak behind him

even my short bow would have nailed him to a tree

yup the ancient composite bows of the nomadic asian tribes c 2000BC were very powerful and the scythians took them to a new high.....

I have a traditional yew longbow that is "the height of the man plus the span of his hand" and 110 lb pull...and nowadays I dont use it often or for long let me tell you

I also have a yew "short bow" "the height of the man to his shoulder" designed originally for use in forests as it can be slung across your shoulders and not catch on either the ground or overhanging branches, and is easier to use in close cover, originally used mainly for hunting in forests it was favoured by many archers for those very qualities. That one is about 75lbs pull

both use 37 inch (cloth yard) shafts
both draw that shaft fully
the shafts carry a head that can vary from 1/2 to 3 oz of iron at between 175 ft/sec to 210 ft/second
both will nail one of those heads up to 3-4 inches deep in a tree at close range and 1+ inch at extreme range.
both will shove that head right through you and out the other side fletchings and all.... at close ~ 50 yards range and most of the way through you at extreme range ~100-150 yards.....

in the wrong hands ...dangerous toys

oh and I can unaimed put 10 shafts a min into the air and about 5 per min aimed for as long as I have arrows or untill I run out of puff....

it is bloody hard work
but you can see why 500 archers would devastate infantry in the old days..... 10 mins of that and your army would be a porcupine...a very dead porcupine...... ask the french.....

Very interesting

I had lessons in archery when I was younger in the summer months at Crystal Palace. They used to have all these sport coaches and always did archery.

I once tried to use a long bow, which one of the coaches brought in with him one day to use. He allowed all of us to try the longbow. Not one of us could pull it back properly.

I was 13 at the time   Rolling Eyes

i guess it takes a few years of practice and upper body strengh to be able to use such a bow?

yep as I say I dont use the big one now very much, I've had it some 40 years and in my younger days it wasnt a problem but now.....phew ....it makes me sweat I can tell you. but its not all down to brute strength...there is a technique to it as well

If you watch some of the archeology programs you will see that they can tell a professional bowman from the norman times by the fact he is much bigger boned with massive muscle attachments on one side of his upper body......these guys were doing it all day every day.....

Yeah I have watched a few documentries about that. Its very interesting

One of the most interesting documentries was Called "Crusaders back from the dead"

This excellent documentary uses forensic science to show how these Templar crusaders died in a battle in 1179 in a battle at Jacobs Ford a Crusader castle over looking the river jordan. These are the first Crusader graves to have been found in context.
