I didn't know that women got shorter sentences. Is that an official thing?

It doesn't actually say that women get lighter sentences, it's a debate on whether they should get a lighter sentence. That only seems to apply to women who look after children though. Why should a woman who doesn't have children get a longer sentence than those who do?

Also, if they don't want to go to prison, why do they keep reoffending? They must know the score. There seems to be an assumption that when women commit a crime, it's because they're a victim in some way, and if men commit a crime, they're just baddies.

If you don't want "time", don't do the crime!

There's "equality" for you... the lefty way... where some are more equal than others...

Why should they get lighter sentences? On what grounds? For having kids? That's the only argument I think they may have.

If you've committed a crime that's bad enough to put you away for years, you don't deserve to be around your kids.

The girl they had on wasn't a very good example. She freely admitted that she beat someone up.

The crimes women commit are not generally a danger to society. And for a woman with kids, farming them out to temporary foster carers whilst she's in jail, costs the community a FORTUNE. Jailing mums is best avoided if at all possible, believe me.  Alternative punishments make more sense.

Smile

The prison sentence should match the crime commited...

IF the crime is serious enough, no woman should be given a discount simply because she is female..

Over here, they already have jails designed to allow minimum security/low security mums to keep their babies and pre-school age children with them  --  open grounds, actual creches and pre-schools, where they look more like motels or campgrounds rather than typical prisons.

Maybe the British authorities need to apply some lateral thinking, and see how some others are approaching these problems ?

Don't talk nonsense... in this country, jail is given to only serious offenders, or for repeat offenders of less serious crimes...

If someone is convicted of these, then they deserve to go to jail, regardless of whether they are male or female, and regardless of whether they have children or not!

In fact... it's best that children are not around such convicted criminals, not an excuse for criminals to avoid jail...!

I get that, but it's discriminating against anyone who doesn't have young children, and anyone who has a partner who can look after the children. That's not right.

As the guy said on the video, regardless of the triviality of the crime, it's the reoffending which is the problem. If a woman shoplifts and gets a community order or a fine, then keeps doing it, you have to get tougher in the end.
