Jamie Oliver is accused of 'cultural appropriation' for launching jerk rice: Labour MP joins social media outrage and tells chef the Caribbean dish is 'not just a word you put before stuff to sell products'

Post by Didge on Sun Aug 19, 2018 4:35 pm

First topic message reminder :

Jamie Oliver has been accused of cultural appropriation by Labour's shadow women and equalities minister and other social media users for launching 'punchy jerk rice'. Dawn Butler, the MP for Brent Central in north west London, picked up on comments from social media about the product and joined in with her own criticism.

She suggested Oliver was using the word jerk to increase the sales of his rice and his product was not faithful to the original Caribbean recipe which is usually a marinade for meat. The Labour MP also suggested father-of-five ask Levi Roots, the creator of jerk barbeque sauce Reggae Reggae sauce, to teach him about it.

Ms Butler tweeted: '#jamieoliver @jamieoliver #jerk I'm just wondering do you know what #Jamaican #jerk actually is?

'It's not just a word you put before stuff to sell products. @levirootsmusic should do a masterclass. Your jerk Rice is not ok. This appropriation from Jamaica needs to stop.'

Jerk can refer to a type of cooking which involves marinating meat in a jerk spice mixture, or the marinade itself. It originated in Jamaica.

The spice mix itself primarily uses allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers - neither of which are listed on the ingredients list for Mr Oliver's product - alongside others.

David Llewellyn wrote: 'I was about to headbutt my desk over this tweet from Dawn Butler because most cultural appropriation brouhahas are nonsense.

'Then I saw this description of Jamie Oliver's "Jerk" Rice. On what planet can "garlic, ginger and jalapenos" be described as "Jerk"?'

Many jerk recipes involve meat such as chicken or pork, but Mr Oliver's £2.30 microwaveable rice offering is vegetarian, with the packaging suggesting it is 'seriously good' with chicken wings.

Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and Waitrose all stock the product on their websites.

Seriously, people cannot win. If people embrace multiculturalism, they get accused of Cultural appropriation. If they dont embrace multiculturalism, they get accused of racism

Jamie, should tell those complaining to jog on.

your post is just rubbish
Now your saying Pasta sauce Instead of Spaghetti sauce
So your obviously clueless as there is even LESS of an original pasta sauce, you'd be given get a black eye from Nonna if you claimed the wrong one in the wrong village as the original
Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

And Jamie can promote World foods Respectfully, but that is not Jerk Rice by any acceptable definition.

And he is back to abuse and no counter to my points

Read back to my reply to Gelico. Its you now trying to move the goalposts poorly as you have been easily shown to be in error here. You want to create a problem where none exists. There is an authentic pasta sauce for spaghetti. Which shows you are still missing the point on countless authenti dishes and sauces have adapted over time

Seriously, I doubt Jamie gives a shit what you think on this and neither should he.

As far as I a conerned you are done here, please continue to talk to yourself

Come off it, Dodger...

You haven't posted one legitimate "point" on this thread, that anyone else can see...

All we see you doing so far, is quoting from some clueless extreme-right fuckwits, whose jibbering nonsense is even more pathetic than the vacuous drivel that you have been posting on here (and over on the vaping/non-smoking thread..).

how is it related?
No one is adapting anything.
just stealing names and whacking them on something completely different.

p.s. jerk is not a sauce,
it's a spice mix seasoning consisting of all spice and scotch bonnets..  Plus whatever else you want to add to make it your own adaption/fusion jerk. Then Your allowed to call it jerk and it's embracing multiculturalism because it is, you had respect towards the Jamaican cultural icon and met the conditions to be considered jerk seasoning.

Why is this still being debated? It’s not jerk seasoning.
But they shouldn’t be solely picking on Jamie Oliver as lots of products offer themselves as fake sauces.

I dunno Didge wont admit he's wrong

And I don't think it is really about Jamie, but this specific case is a prime example of the difference between embracing Multiculturalism and cultural appropriation. Which a lot on here don't seem to understand the difference between.

It's About showing the same respect towards another cultures Cuisine/Music/Art as you would your own.

LOL Nonna is getting very annoyed with you Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Does this come back to your ignorance about why there is so many pasta/noodle sauces around the world? Suspect Suspect Suspect Suspect
it starts with the fact it was a technique was invented in the early bronze age at least 4000years ago in north east Asia, after about 3 and half thousand years it had spread all the way to Europe. And every region it has spread to has made sauces for it based on LOCAL ingredients.

BUT what does any of that have to do with taking the name of someones cultural icon and slapping it on something unrelated and selling under the premise of being the cultural icon. confused

Again, if he has said Jamaican Style or meet the minimum definition of Jerk then no problem. Rolling Eyes

If we relate this to Art, it's Like Selling Ben and Eddies book as Shakespeare in China, whats the problem? it English-style literature?  it's not Shakespeare but that doesn't matter, According to Didge, No English person should take offense that their cultural icon is slapped on something unrelated, reduced to non-specific meaning and just used as a vague generic-ism for anything from their culture.

Some more Culinary history for why there is no Authentic Spaghetti sauce, largely because many of the sauces commonly used with spaghetti predate spaghetti.

Spaghetti doesn't really appear until the 1800's when mechanical pasta rollers get invented, you cant really make it by hand. Hand made pasta/noodles start becoming common in Italy over 200 years earlier.
Hand made 'pasta' is types like the seashell shaped ones, that can be made by flattening a small piece of dough on the thumb of back of a spoon. and hand made noodles are ones like fettuccine where you roll out a big sheet and cut it into strips.

Interestingly Italians never picked up the art of pulling noodles, I think it is because the wheat flours found locally in Italy don't have as much gluten as the rice flours found in Asia where the technique is popular.

the funny thing is Didge is being so Culturally ignorant with his pasta example because spaghetti just refers to the noodle shape, if he had any respect for Italian Cuisine/culture he would know that.

The Sauces have their own Names and Minimum Requirements, most allow for some regional/seasonal variation with the herbs. But Again Didge can't be bothered to show any respect towards another culture and acknowledge that  Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

there are heaps because most towns have their own variant.
the Famous ones is neapolitan from the naples region. But that is mainly due to it being the staple of Italian-American cooking.
but of the top of my head you also have Bolonase, Carbonara, Alferdo

That is an authentic pasta sauce

A traditional basic (all region) bolognese.

Tomatoes boiled and sieved
Celery
Carrot
Onion
Garlic
Basil
Oregano

Optional others.

Most pasta sauces do not contain celery or carrot.

Let’s sue them

I a wondering when veya is going to accuse the Italians of cultural appropriation for their authentic sauces which are based on tomatoes

When tomatoes originate from South America

Again, this is why food is Universal and to claim cultural appropriation on food. Is just plain leftist drivel.

I like Italian food, and most meditteranean dishes, so I’ve googled proper recipes, plus I’ve worked with lots of different nationalities, and I ask A LOT of questions...!

I can’t bake a cake to save my dead dad’s soul though. Pffff.

Wrong and why you are ignorant on cultures veya

I am not talking about Bolognese, but the recipe for Marinara sauce

Which even predates pasta dishes

You are so ignornant on this, you are using the American term for this sauce

Now I could say you are insulting Italians by such ignorance, but I will not, because I would rather you understand food is universal

New?

And yet you do not shout cultural appropriation?

How uch are you backing me now?

Seriously?

Jamie Oliver offers a new form of Jerk with vegintarian rice and that is taboo for you. Yet you accept variations of Marinara sauce?

Come again?

Can you show me anywhere that I stated that an ingredient cannot be used in an authentic dish or sauce?

I never did, you just made that bullshit up. To deflect away from you talking bullshit

I think that is wrong and is cultural appropriation by the author, much like Jamie, although not as bad since it at least contain one of the minimum ingredients.

bolognese specifically has meat and specifically comes from Bologna so can't be "all regions" Cool
It doesn't meet the minimum for bolognese which is just meat and crushed tomatoes. but will almost always have other things depending on the cooks inclination.
the Minimum for Neapolitan is Crushed tomatoes and Garlic
the Minimum for Carbonara is Cream and egg

like the Minimum for Jerk is Scotch bonnets and All spice Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

generally all of these will contain other things

And that's not even what has occurred
Jamie has made up something that doesn't meet the Minimum requirements to Jerk and then proceeded o Market it as Jerk
