What do you bring to forums?

Post by Syl on Sat Aug 11, 2018 7:17 pm

First topic message reminder :

Something or nothing?
What kind of poster do you think you are....because we all fall into categories.
Interesting, interested, helpful, a watcher, a leader, a liar, argumentative, easily influenced, set in solid beliefs?
So many different times of posters.

I wonder if we see ourselves as others see us...I doubt it somehow. Laughing

So now Tommy has been shown what is Far right and now he cannot himself state what is Far right

He asked, I gave my understanding and links

He placed his head in the sand and refused to believe the reality

Why I left him sulking

So as seen, I already did define and explain why the BNP is far right and what is far right politics. I even backed this up with evidence

Tommy ignores this and again avoids stating what he thinks is Far right

Like I said earlier

Now I am going to leave this for other posters to decide. Whether or not, I reasoned why I think the BNP are far right. I made many points on this. Its up to Tommy to agree or not. The point is though, I did and backed this up with evidence. I even reasoned what is far right

He though, has avoided saying what he thinks Far right politics is

I place myself in the hands of posters here to decide and will abide by their decision with a majority. As Tommy loves a democratic vote   Laughing

Damn I can't find the thread where we say what each poster's fave phrase is. So I'll put this here, sorry.

Wolfie: "Didgeridoo" His name for Didge & it proper cracks me up!!

Tommy "waffle, yawn"

Nicko "zzzzzzzzz"

Syl: Missing or misplaced apostrophes. Why, why why?  Sad you're deliberately messing with my head, it sets off my OCD when you do this!!  Laughing

Quill "let's get analytical and apply some critical thinking" -  or something  like that. (I luv your intellekshual style, Quill!! )

Devil guy "Chortle, chortle"

SmellyBandit "Trump rocks"

Lurker "Trump sucks"

Didge "Take your time, you hypocrite!"

I notice these things!

Oddly enough, I was listening to a very well spoken linguist on the radio the other day saying that the apostrophe was useless in modern written English language, in any case he claimed most people use it in the wrong places anyway. Razz

My written English is pretty rubbish, but tbh I think what you say is more important than the sp and grammar used.

I certainly agree with the sentiment in your last paragraph, but I also disagree with your "well spoken linguist" about use of the apostrophe.

It is becoming widely misused, not only because of the relentless encroachment of internet-speak in everyday correspondence and advertising, but also because many teachers of English cannot be bothered to teach it properly  - even if they themselves can understand it!

Having got that off my chest, I shall now go down to Tescos supermarket and buy a kilo of potatoe's and a bunch of banana's...

My written English is pretty rubbish, but tbh I think what you say is more important than the sp and grammar used.

People misuse it because they're ignorant.   Teach yourself to read and write, for fuck's sake!

Some would say it's ignorant to reply to people using foul language. snobby

The apostrophe is a sign interjected to show somehing missing, as in a contraction; or a possessive or some plurals; originally from French (which uses lots of contractions).

Dictionary.com says:

Dictionary.com wrote:The sign ('), as used: to indicate the omission of one or more letters in a word, whether unpronounced, as in o'er for over, or pronounced, as in gov't for government; to indicate the possessive case, as in man's; or to indicate plurals of abbreviations and symbols, as in several M.D.'s, 3's.

With the advent of the Internet, contractions are used a lot more because they are shorter.  Hence, the sign (') is used for longer spellings, which are troublesome on keyboards and cell phones.  We use initials the same way: WTF or TBH, etc.

Seriously, if I started worrying about whether I have used perfect punctuation marks when writing out posts I wouldn't be posting naturally or normally.
I post like I talk...I am from Salford for Gods sake. Razz

I'm glad you are relaxed about it.  That's the way we should be.  But, as a writer, it's my profession, so I'm quite fickle about it.  Strunk & White (Elements of Style) is my bible, and I actually find it fun to figure out proper form.  You know how I love logic, and language is quite logical.

Plus, I'm actually quite bad at spelling, so the computer has been a god-send for me.

People are different and we all have our own way of writing.
To be honest unless something is glaringly obvious I dont think bad spelling matters here, we are not sitting exams after all Laughing
Like I mentioned, the words we write are far more important than the exact spelling or punctuation to me.....if others are sticklers for perfect English......that's OK too. x

Have to admit, I used to judge people's intelligence by how clearly and gramatically-correct they wrote.

I've chilled out about it as I've gotten older.

You’ve had to.  You have been replying to me, via type-written words for over three years.
And you know how badly I type when:

* my iPad does fuckeries (think “dint” and “aga”)
* I’m very drunk
* we are fighting and I’m typing very fast.

So yeah, Mr Editor Man aka “I rarely make mistakes even when I’m angry”, you have HAD to learn to chill out.

You’re welcome.  Razz
