Animal Trivia Quiz

Post by eddie on Wed Aug 01, 2018 10:51 pm

Without gooooogling! Can you name these groups of animals?

Example: a group of fish is a school of fish.

Your first one:

A group of chickens.

scratch

The first word I thought of was a "clutch" of chickens --  as that is the more common term most likely to be heard over here...

However, after eddie's additional clue,  I suspect that the one she is after is "peep"  --  an English term that is not too common around here, but occasionally turns up in crosswords..

As for veya's "flock" --  a term for any group of birds, that would be more applicable to the adult chooks (i.e. hens) in general.

well my other answer was a Rotisserie of Chickens

I've heard a 'Clutch of Chicks' but that's normally referring to baby birds

In Australia and NZ, the term "chicken" refers to baby poultry/chooks/hens & roosters...

Once they reach five or six months, adult hens should be referred to as "chooks";
(Note that poultry for supermarkets these days are being 'hervested' at 8 to 12 weeks of age, where back in the 1970s it was more like 22 weeks; so technically a frozen supermarket chicken is still correctly a "chicken")..

Mistakenly referring to grown poultry as "chickens" is yet another example of Americanised crap-talk, showing the influence of American advertising and television shows  --  along the same lines as non-Americans wrongly referring to toilets as "the bathroom", blokes as "bud", girls/women/sheilas as "babe, dame, chick", people as "you guys", calling a track a "trail", and so on.

Surprised

Or a "charge" ? (Or is that for buffalo ?).

First word I thought of was "herd" -- but that's more of a generic term that can be used for any&all grazing animals..

Come on, wolf. You do have a habit of insulting both Syl and Horatio without good cause. And whether or not this time you spelt Syl as Sly intentionally or not, it is understandable why it might seem that way. All you had to do was explain.

And regardless, even if Syl was unjustified in calling you a wetwipe, there is such a thing as a proportionate response. Which your adjective and noun strewn post certainly wasn't.

Just, try, and be nicer to them. They might even be nice back Smile

How about ducks?  Have you people forgotten the topic?

There are actually two names for ducks in a group...one for on water, and one for otherwise. The one I have in mind is on water. But either will do.

Sounds beautiful. We have coast nearby, perhaps 10 miles. Very idyllic. But small, hilly roads, not meant for the commute.

Quack-quacks? No, those are shabby medical doctors. Razz

I agree. I have visited there. Being an island Scot myself, from Mull, I am partial to the west coast. It has an aura like no where else in the world.

A raft of Ducks or a paddling.

Right the second post. A paddling of ducks is a group in the water. A raft of ducks is out of the water.

A group of owls is very English. What are they called?

Just like rabbits, males are called bucks; females are called does.  Together they are called a mob or a troop.

You are absolutely right about Owls.

As for duck, you think that "paddling" pertains to ducks on land???  I think you're reading too much into the cultural imagery leading up to these nicknames.  You are using the first metaphor that comes to your mind.

Yes, "raft" can recall a barge on water, but that doesn't exactly describe ducks in numbers, which is what we are up to.  "Raft" also means "countless", as in "loads" or "immeasurable" or "multitudinous".  For my money, that better describes ducks, particularly in a flush, or in any flight.
