Survival on a desert island

Post by Angry Andy on Mon Jun 25, 2018 12:51 pm

6 people are shipwrecked on a remote but bountiful desert island.
A politician
An engineer.
A medic
A carpenter
A survivalist
a banker

Who is/are the least useful?

I think the answer sums up why the civilised world is going to hell in a handcart.

But who would you prefer as your survivalist?
Bear Grylls or Ray Mears?

I dont think then banker and politician are tottally useless, espcially, as we have had some great politicians in history.

At then of the day, the survivors would need a Politician with diplomatic skills and leadership for the group. Where the banker could help establish a system for storing the food and possessions.

Plus the fact, 6 people are going to stand a better chance than four people. As there would be plenty to do for all of them in order to all survive

Not only that some Politicians, held other key previous jobs, or qualifications. Like in the army as officers for example and thus would also be very skilled in survival and more so in defense for the group against potential predators/enemies. Some have even been doctors as well. So it would all depend what background that Politician has also here. Bit hard to then judge without all the facts here.

Surely the medic and the carpenter are the most useful?

The island has fresh water, trees and bamboo.
The survivalish will ensure your short and long term chances are good.
The engineer and carpenter can build shelter and a good raft or boat.
The medic will keep you health.
The political will try to make the rules and the banker will try to buy his place at the front of the food queue and place on the boat.

considering even at my level of survivalist I can make a water harvester(for getting water from leaves/vegetation) out of Clear plastic, a hole in the ground and a rock to you over estimate what is required.

at a basic level the process is
make steam, catch steam and condense steam Wink
condensed steam is fresh water.

salt water and say the wreckage of a plane/ship would be sufficient to build a desalination unit for a dozen or so people, it wont be pretty but it will work Wink

So basically it is a life in paradise, what do you need any of these guys for? Suspect Suspect Suspect Suspect

Any Island with fresh water has plentiful bird life too. and possibly mammals and reptiles.
You Really don't need many survival skills in this place Neutral

Basketball

Neither of them  --   they don't come from my part of the world.  There are other "survival instructors" out there that I would put ahead of them..

Out of those two, I reckon Ray Mears seems to be more practical and down-to-earth;  while Bear Grylls is more of a showman, trading on his SAS and mountaineering background..

I wouldn't trust a self-declared "survivalist", anyways (and --  I would also add here that most of the well-known survival instructors/"experts", like Grylls, Mears, Krucynski, et al, don't call themselves "survivalists") --  most of those jumpy twats who think of themselves as gung-ho hard-core "survivalists" are in essence ill-bred, overweight and inexperienced xenophobic nutbags who would be at a total loss without their bomb-shelters/boltholes, "bugout bags", Glocks and AR-15s.

As for the lest useful -- neither the politician nor the wanker would get a look in with me, unless they had some other useful experiences and attributes..

Cool

Your deserted island is no longer a "desert" island, if it has fresh water and trees...

And if there's bamboo, that possibly locates the island in in S.E. Asia or near China..

With the engineer and the 'medic', hopefully their training, backgrounds and (hopefully..) more flexible thought processes and analytical/critical thinking could help with problem solving, while if the carpenter is skilled and competent, he could keep the others 'grounded' and focussed, and help with actually achieving practical outcomes.

I was waiting for the answer. So true, Andy...a good one.

Of course, each one needs a lawyer to argue his or her case. cheers

The politician and the banker would not be needed as politician or banker... but just useful as helpers to the others in assisting in doing whatever physical labour was needed for the groups survival...!
