Too poor to keep their children clean...UK 2018.

Why are families appearing to be struggling more now than they did in the 40's and 50's?

"Half of primary school teachers are giving out soap, washing powder and shampoo weekly to pupils from hard-up households, figures show.
As budgets tighten, struggling families are being forced to prioritise bills and food over hygiene essentials.
The study, for charity In Kind Direct, found a quarter of parents cannot afford basic cleaning products.
Nearly 20% admitted their child wears the same underwear for at least two days. A quarter use the same shirt for a week, and 3% go to school in the same clothes for at least a fortnight."

"Nicola Finney, 49, head of St Paul’s Church of England primary in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs, has spent hundreds of pounds of her own cash helping families, buying a washing machine for one.
She said: “You used to have the odd child where you could see the family was struggling because of the way the uniform was kept. Now, it’s two or three in every class.
I talk to colleagues up and down the country, it’s happening everywhere.” Some 80% of primary teachers have seen an increase in unwashed pupils in the last five years.
A third have given out toothpaste, soap or toothbrushes. London was the worst-hit area, with half of teachers referring a family to a charity each week."

Could the rise in unkempt children have as much to do with useless parents as it does with poverty?

When we see mothers trawling round the streets and taking their kids to school in slippers and dressing gowns (and I have seen that quite a lot with my own eyes) is it any wonder that if their standards are so low with their own appearance they wont make any effort with their kids either.

Do you know how much a tube of toothpaste costs? Or a bar of soap?

Wouldn't you move heaven and earth to ensure your child didn't lose its teeth, or go to school in shitty underwear?

You mean to tell me that out of your weekly family allowance benefit of £20.70 per week for your first child. £13.70 a week for any further children...that you couldn't buy a 25p tube of toothpaste? Or a 30 pence bar of soap? Both of which last for days.

The fact that these kids don't know HOW to clean their teeth or wash speaks volumes to anyone with half a brain. This significant fact was highlighted on the news this morning. They don't know HOW to clean their teeth!

If you have dirty slovenly parents, the chances are you're going to follow that example if you're their kid. No amount of dishing out of toiletries will change that.

As for soap powder? £2.99 in Aldi for a large 40 wash pack. No washing machine? Wash it by hand.

You can bet those families have a tv and mobile phones though. I've yet to meet anyone on benefits (and I know a few including family) who don't own a TV, computer and have internet access. Or keep themselves clean.

My family were working poor, like the majority, my father's pay was in one hand and straight out the other we didn't have a washing machine, dryer or vacuum, only one cold tap in the whole house, yet I went to school in clean clothes and had a top and tail wash every day
Hair was washed once a week and usually kept in plaits or pony tail.

Then I don't think they are the cause. The rise is much greater than those who partake of "booze, fags and bingo."

It was a tin bath jobbie for most folks who didn't have access to a bathroom, and a daily wash. We didn't have a washing machine, or vacuum when I was small. I remember my mum sweeping the carpet with a brush to get it clean, used to take her ages. She hand washed everything, even the sheets. Nobody had duvets in those days. I remember washing my hair with washing up liquid at one point, and rinsing it with vinegar. Can you imagine anyone taking the trouble to do any of that these days? They wash their clothes in third world countries FFS! Yet they can't do it here?

There's a whole underbelly now who have no interest in keeping themselves clean and tidy. You see them puffing away on fags and shuffling around in dirty old trackies. They go to supermarkets in their fucking pajamas. That's how lazy and slovenly they are.

It's still in the comparative minority but it's increasing, and you can bet it's this kind of person who are passing on their habits to their kids.

What self respecting, responsible parent would even allow their child to go unwashed? There's no excuse in this day and age. None at all.

My poor old mum didn't have two pennies to rub together when I was a small, but she stood over me every morning and night to make sure I cleaned my teeth.

This country has free dental treatment for children, and yet more and more are losing their teeth to poor hygiene and decay.

What do you mean by "useless parents".

Parents who are more interested in themselves than their children.
Parents who cant be arsed getting up and getting their kids ready for school.
Parents who prefer to spend their money on unessentials rather than buy soap and toothpaste and show their kids how to keep themselves clean.
Parents who feed their overweight unhealthy kids processed rubbish instead of supplying them with a healthy diet.

That's just for starters.

Same here Vintage minus the father.
My mum worked three cleaning jobs at one time to ensure we had the basics.
She, like so many of her generation never asked for handouts...she worked for the stuff we needed, and we were usually well fed and always clean.

Spot on.

There are a few women locally who slob around outside in pj's and slippers half the time.
One woman is very slim, blonde, trout pout, either in dressing gown or done up like a chav.
In the school holidays she drives her and her kid to Mcdonalds every morning to bring their breakfast back. The kid sits on the front step eating all the rubbish her mother is plying her with. She is about 9 or 10 now and gets fatter everytime I see her.
Mother also Effs and blinds at the girl, the girl now effs and blinds back at her.

If the children are being neglected then the parent/s should be facing criminal charges... simple as that!!!

I bet they all get hundreds of pounds a week in benefits/tax credits etc... most of which is given to them to spend on ensuring their childrens needs/costs are covered etc... so there is absolutely no excuse for any to be turning up at school as is reported...!!!

And what would happen to the parents if they faced charges of not keeping their kids clean Tommy?

Forcing them to go to parental classes might work for some, but if they are constantly pleading poverty that's their get out card.
Perhaps some benefits should be paid out in food and hygiene vouchers rather than cash......because I'm sure some of the parents who do plead poverty and accept handouts from the teachers manage to find money to buy their own little comforts.

All this has just reminded me of the Gibbs tooth paste(not toothpaste) that was a gritty dirty pink stuff in a round tin that we cleaned our teeth with, my first memory of teeth cleaning, a bit later we did have toothpaste, also remember green multipurpose soap that was gritty as well you could leave it in water all day and it never went slimy, there was a larger version about the size of half a brick my mother used to use when scrubbing the lino and step. There is no excuse for being dirty. We had the tin bath as well although we weren't posh with the long tin bath we only had the small oval one.
People have decided to become more relaxed in their dress and habits but some just go too far, even some of the tramps we used to see in the 50's were better turned out than some these days.

It got your attention Vic.

Do Ben and Eddie want lots of new and varied threads , relating to both sides of the Atlantic, involving corruption, Brexit and links to Russia, or a yawn fest by 2 tired posters way past their bedtime?

If You don't like them, tough shit.

I followed implicitly the forum rules, backed each thread up with a solid link to main stream media.

If you think it is a propaganda shit fest, then counter it.

What would be appropriate action?
You cant fine someone with no money, you cant jail them and separate them from their children, community work? if they cant keep their kids clean what use are they in the community?
They need educating not punishing.

Social services like the police are  already short staffed and overworked, I cant see them coping with potentially thousands of extra cases.

I dont know the answer, other than educating parents and paying benifits out in vouchers for food and basics rather than cash, which is obviously not being spent on the kids welfare.

Twat!

Interesting take on my motives, tommy.  I just had never seen a colorized version of that picture.  You have filled in the gaps.

Why are you so interested in that particular building. Home?

Carry on...

Syl... you earlier claimed these 'parents' were poor... too poor to buy basic soap & toothpaste etc... but then you said their benefits should (at least partly) be given in vouchers for such basics... which is admitting that they already have plenty of money handed to them for the purpose of buying/providing such basics, but they are spending the money on other things instead...!!!

And Quill... it is abundantly clear what you posted that picture for... and you are making yourself look a twat!!!

The articles posted reported that the parents simply couldnt afford to keep their kids clean Tommy, I would question that.
No doubt many families with youngsters are struggling, but if money is spent wisely, a £1 a week, which would buy budget soap and toothpaste, shouldnt leave anyone out of pocket.
If it does, it's probably because the money is being spent on none essentials, hence the voucher idea.

Idea

In some Aussie Aboriginal communities, they have elected to have problem parents and families (e.g. those with alcohol and substance abuse problems, other addictions, or mental illness.) receive the great bulk (e.g. 80% or more..) of their social service/unemployment benefits and family payments paid on a charge/bank card that can only be used at designated supermarkets and shops (i.e. no alcohol, gambling, spray paints --  and not enough ready cash to buy illicit drugs..).

These arrangements were made in consultation with the community elders and councils, with the majority of people involved agreeing with those arrangements, to make it pretty well democratic --  meaning that the problem elements could stay and agree to those restrictions, or leave the community --  either way their children would be better off..

There has already been some talk about extending such systems onto problem welfare recipients in regular mainstream communities down here (e,g. Those with drug, alcohol and/or gambling problems, especially where children or family are affected by their problem behaviours --  though some fascists/corporatists would like to extend such controls to all welfare payments, that kind of bastardry isn't currently on the cards..)  I don't know whether they have started yet, but there was talk about trials in some "houso" areas..

So many things are abundantly clear to you, tommy. That god exists. That nature has anthropomorphic attitudes and feelings. That the Easter bunny is real and lays eggs.

You are a wealth of myths, my friend.

So you want to basically criminalize many things as neglect Tommy?

Sugar intake?

What a child eats in basically fat levels?

I totally agree there is something wrong with how some parents do not prioritise over what is essential to children, but your view, is that now, this should be criminalized as a stand point on people not buying soap?

Seriously?

Do you want to also criminlize parents that smoke in front of their children?

Education is the key, not seperating children from their parents

Nobody tells you how you should spend your money do they?

There is something very wrong if parents now are unable to keep their children clean, I wonder what state the parents are in, do they wash themselves and their clothes, if they do, why don't they wash their children and their clothes, if they don't, were they brought up by parents who couldn't be bothered or is it something new for many, is it all down to drug and alcohol abuse. I don't remember anyone being dirty when I was young, even tramps used to ask for some hot water at the door, I can remember my mother boiling water for them and giving them a cup of tea and a cheese sandwich while they waited.

What about people that live by nature without manufactured human needs?

Is that doww to drug abuse or alcohol?

I mean lets think about your view for one minute and why there is a glowing problem in the UK today with homelessness.

How people see as unclean are seen as a problem, because they smell and look dirty.

Do you not think that this is the real problem here?

The stigmatisation of people with homelessness, over cleanliness?

Some people choose the lifestyles they lead, I mean seriously, do you go to a zoo and demand that every animal be given a bar of soap?

In nature it does not happen and its unimportant. Its only within humans that think, people should be something they have come to expect

So I dare you Vintage, go up to a Gorrilla, a lion, a Crocadille and demand that they should wash themselves, because before the advent of soap. Natural sweat was the turn on for many male and female humans.

Neglect is already a criminal offence... and investigation would uncover the level of neglect the children are being subjected to...!

Parents have a duty of care... and when it is evident that they are neglecting their children by failing to provide the basic sanitary condition of their children, then the authorities have a duty to intervene and investigate...!!!

Well I am asking you about neglect, am I not?

So you are saying an invented aspect of humans, washing with soap, with invented human needs, is now neglect

Does a human need soap to wash themselves?

So if one becomes one with the wild again, to you its neglect?

How so?

Are you going to go up to indegenious tribes and demand they spray themselves with perfume and aftershave?

If you want to stage a dirty protest by yourself in your own home... then that is up to you...!

But parents have a duty of care to provide hygiene to their children!!!

Try reading the OP you idiot...!!!

These 'parents' are happy to take the soap and toothpaste the teachers are giving out to them... they have no moral objection to using soap and toothpaste then... they just don't want to use the money they get in benefits for the child, to pay for the stuff themselves...!!!

Don't know what the rest of your ranting waffle is about...!!!???

But I do find it to be...

Most amusing!

I'm not sure what you are on about Didge, I asked what the cause may be -alcohol, drugs or neglectful parents of the current parents who know no better. As for cleaning like animals, their tongues are made for grooming fur in the main, humans would spend an inordinate length of time licking themselves clean and I suppose you could lick your hands to reach the inaccessible places, as animals do no, doubt with practise you could cut down the time required.

What is wrong with humans licking themselves clean?

You see, how it is humans that have now perceived a view on what is cleanliness, and you are such an example of this indoctrination
