USA Today wrote:LOUISVILLE — Bell County high school student and valedictorian Ben Bowling wanted to share some words of wisdom with his graduating class, but there was a twist that no one saw coming.

"This is the part of my speech where I share some inspirational quotes I found on Google," Bowling said in his speech. "'Don't just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.' — Donald J. Trump."

The crowd burst into applause.

"Just kidding," Bowling said. "That was Barack Obama."

The 18-year-old valedictorian said the crowd quickly went silent.  "The crowd erupted in applause and before they could even finish clapping I said I was kidding and the applause quickly died," Bowling said.

Bowling, who graduated on Saturday morning, told Courier Journal that he "didn't mean anything bad by it" and thought the moment was lighthearted and funny.

“I just thought it was a really good quote,” Bowling said. “Most people wouldn’t like it if I used it, so thought I’d use Donald Trump’s name. It is southeastern Kentucky after all.”

Southerners.   Rolling Eyes

USA Today wrote:Bell County, which is located in the southeastern part of the Commonwealth near the Tennessee border, overwhelmingly supported Trump in the 2016 Presidential election. Nearly 80 percent of ballots were cast for the political outsider and celebrity.

Bowling said there was no backlash to his speech at all.

"There was a portion of the crowd that thought it was absolutely hilarious," Alisha Russell, a Kentucky law student who attended the ceremony said in a Twitter message. "But there was definitely some collective groaning too."

Y’all, no lie - the valedictorian just quoted Trump and everyone cheered.. then he told us that it was actually an Obama quote. Best part of the day. I am rolling.

— Alisha Russell (@_alisharussell) June 2, 2018
Russell immediately went to Twitter to share the experience.

"Y'all, no lie - the valedictorian just quoted Trump and everyone cheered ... then he told us that it was actually an Obama quote. Best part of the day. I'm rolling," Russell tweeted.

Bowling graduated from Bell County High School with a 4.216 grade point average, he said. He will be attending the University of Kentucky where he hopes to study biology and hopes to pursue a degree in medicine.

Anyone still believe that America hasn't gone tribal in it's politics?  The message is irrelevant, it's the association.

In recognition of that, wouldn't it be better if the west coast broke away and became the Pacific States of America?  In smaller segments, the US wouldn't have to try to reconcile various irreconcilable populations.

It's a better community when neighbors have common values, beliefs and symbols.  Obama doesn't belong in the south, as this incident shows.  And, the south doesn't belong in California.

He was talking about during the time they thought it was from Trump. The kid was just repeating himself.

They applauded when they thought Trump had said it, gelico. They went silent when they learned Obama had said it, actually.

And that shows you everything you need to know about Trump's supporters. They don't latch onto ideas. They don't actually have principles. They just parrot their dear leader.

So many people who think they think free when they don't. Trump supporters want to think they're special. Everybody wants to think they're special. They're not. If they knew better, they would see how very similar they are to all sorts of people who have come before them.

But they don't know this, because they're stupid. And stupid people don't realize they're stupid.

I honestly don't believe you could take many quotes by Trump, and get the same result.

I do think there might be a few things Trump said that you could pass off as Obama (in a similar situation) and get the same reaction from tribal Democrats. But nowhere near as many and there would be nowhere near the same wealth of things said that could be so easily passed off as someone else. Trump's words tend to be pretty easily identified by their simple vocabulary and ranty, repetitive nature...

True. Though I wouldn't say Obama (or any world leaders) was beyond lying. Trump does seem to have made it into something of a hobby Neutral

An important point.  Republican/conservatives have chosen tribalism over reason.

Ben wrote:So many people who think they think free when they don't. Trump supporters want to think they're special. Everybody wants to think they're special. They're not. If they knew better, they would see how very similar they are to all sorts of people who have come before them.

But they don't know this, because they're stupid. And stupid people don't realize they're stupid.

Take a look at  Berlin, Isaiah, Four Essays on Liberty (1969), superseded by Liberty), original essay, "Two Concepts of Liberty", originally published in The New York Review of Books (1959).   "Positive liberty is the possession of the capacity to act upon one's free will, as opposed to negative liberty, which is freedom from external restraint on one's actions. A concept of positive liberty may also include freedom from internal constraints."  Wikileaks.  Jail is an example of negative liberty; what you are describing, Ben, is the concept of freedom of mind...or positive liberty.

This story is a classic example of conservative inability to reason with ideas, as opposed to jingos, cliches and quips (called anti-reason or a-reason).  Here, the crowd is accepting of the label...until the speaker corrects the label.  There is no recognition from the reasoning of what is said...only the label is important.  Anti-reason, (or a-reason) is the source of bare tribalism.

Just found this and thought I’d stick it here:

“So I have rejected the notion that a lie is little, has a color or is harmless. I believe that if I get comfortable telling small untruths I will eventually tell larger untruths. Integrity and ethical behavior requires telling the truth at all times, in my opinion.“

Perhaps all those lying politicians started off in life thinking that if small lies are acceptable then any lie is acceptable and so their lies grew bigger and they probably didn’t even notice.

It was different sections of the audience that was applauding (and groaning..) each time,  you braindead cow, (with only a minority applauding when it was revealed to be Obama's quote..).

What exactly don't you understand about the term "tribal"  ???
