Is golf a sport? Empty Is golf a sport?

Post by eddie on Tue May 29, 2018 11:09 pm

Thought I’d do a different kind of topic.

Is golf a sport?

Golf in the United States is a $70 billion annual industry with 24.1 million players. A 2016 poll by Public Policy Polling found that nineteen percent of Americans call themselves golf fans, down from twenty-three percent in 2015. The debate over whether or not golf is a sport wages on the internet, in bars, amongst sportswriters, and even on the golf course.

Proponents say that golf meets the definition of "sport" found in the dictionary, requires physical exertion and coordination, and is recognized as a sport by sporting goods companies, athletic associations, fans, the media, and more. They point to golf's inclusion in the Olympics starting in 2016 as further evidence of its qualification as a sport.

Opponents say that golf better meets the definition of "game" than "sport," does not require rigorous physical activity, and can be played professionally by people who are overweight, injured, or non-athletic. They argue that golf is a game or leisure activity, and they cite golf's 112-year absence from the Olympics as proof that it is not a sport.

On this link you will find all pro and con arguments listed clearly for easy reading.
Have a read, and see what you think....

I think it's not. Most sports meet these requirements:

* They require physical exertion, at least at times.

* They require physical agility and/or strength, at least at times.

* They're scored objectively.

* They are governed by an official rulebook.

That excludes golf along with other things often considered sports, such as figure skating and gymnastics. In fact, boxing just barely qualifies as a sport by my definition.

But the competitions that do fit those criteria, nobody ever says they're not sports -- all types of football, along with tennis, hockey, basketball, cricket, baseball and others.

Okay I’m taking the opposite view, just for the heck of it, don’t have an opinion either way, but here goes:

By your reckoning then Ben, gardening is a sport. We have competitions.

Why does a sport have to include agility and strength?

Gardening wouldn't qualify as a sport because it isn't scored objectively, and it really doesn't require physical strength. Little old ladies garden, after all. If you sweat in gardening it's because you've been working in the sun.

I would say agility and strength are what separate sports from games. Games are usually scored objectively and governed by rules, but they don't require athleticism.

Gardening does require agility and strength. People carry paving slabs, heavy foliage, and various other equipment. It requires agility to plant in awkward places (okay that’s a weak point but still) and it requires knowledge and time and care.

Anyway, let’s take a different “sport” as gardening isn’t a great example, admittedly.
What about swimming? That just requires you to be fast...surely?

Okay, swimming (along with footraces, etc.) is definitely a sport, because it requires athleticism. I'm not in anyway convinced that lifting something heavy is "athletic," though. If that's the case, then building is a sport because they lift stuff far heavier than paving stones, and that's just wank fam.

Weightlifting is a sport. There are rules (like weight classes, no steroids, have to lift in different ways, etc.), it requires athleticism obviously, and whoever lifts the most weight wins, so it's objective (i.e. not subject to interpretation by judges).

Pfffffff. Okay so weightlifting is a sport.

Then my next question is, how can you judge what a “sport” is?

Well, I've given my criteria for what a sport actually is, but I accept that some people think driving cars really fast in a circle is a sport. I just don't think so. I think people might think of those things as sports because news coverage of them usually falls in the sports section of the newspaper.

Okay so back to golf, there’s this point:

Golfers burn more calories than gymnasts. Golfing without a cart burns an average of 360 calories per hour (306 with a caddie), compared to about 345 doing gymnastics and 273 bowling playing table tennis or doing yoga. [11] [29] Golfers who play a nine-hole course (2-2.5 miles [8]) without a cart while carrying their own clubs burn 721 calories (613 calories if a caddie carries the bag of clubs which weighs 30-50 pounds on average). [9] [10] Professional tournaments have four rounds of 18 holes, which would be 4,904 calories burned over four days.

As far as heavy-weight boxers go, I'd say they're still quite athletic.

As far as sumo wrestling goes, who the hell knows, dude.

Basketball

There are competitive aspects to gardening for the more serious athletes among them,  viz. Carrying heavy bags of potatoes over a marked course, Hay bale tossing (with pitchforks, nonetheless !),  Cowpat tossing, Gumboot tossing...

Consider the following sports, and compare them with Ben's suggested definitions :
Baseball
Cricket
Archery
Shooting
Lawn Bowls
Dressage
Pub Darts         tongue
Synchronised Drowning
Table Tennis
Rhythmic Gymnastics --  "floor exercises"
Racing --  cars, motorbikes, boats, planes;   horses, camels, dogs, snails..

135 snails competed in the 2017 World Snail Racing Championships in Congham, England on July 15. The snails were placed in a circle and timed to see how quickly they could slither past the finish line 13 inches away. Snails of all sizes, sporting vibrant shell decals, were brought out to the competition, including a snail named Uslime Bolt.

Yeah, of your list, only baseball and cricket qualify. And maybe table tennis, you can work up quite a sweat playing that.

the correct quote is
"Golf is a good walk spoiled"
by mark twain.

If you don't play golf you will never understand. Most people who try give up because they aren't speith or woods as getting good takes time, practice and dedication. Most players also never break 100I think it is around 80%, but that does not matter as the handicap system allows players of different abilities to play together. Golf is also a very social sport. I have met lots of people on golf course that I would never have ever met elsewhere. golfers by and large are friendly and better players will offer help and advice to worse players, for which I am very thankful. Even if you aren't any good just scoring one less than last time is a great achievement. One decent shot in a round can make a score of over a 100 insignificant. A 30foot putt can make your day. Chipping in from off the green can me you feel like tiger at augusta. Golf is a sport that everyone can do from a young age until you can no longer walk. Before I left the UK I was playing almost every day and was getting scores in the mid 80's. However after not playing for more than a year I was right back up to around the 100 mark. It didn't worry me one bit, as I would always do at least one shot in a round that I was pleased by.

[9] [10] Professional tournaments have four rounds of 18 holes, which would be 4,904 calories burned over four days.
you average 18 hole golf course is around 5 miles walking lugging a bag with 14 lumps of metal in it plus other things, even with a trolly walking 5 miles pulling 40to 50 pounds is good exercise. Most players dont use gold carts, the only place I have ever used them is america when they came as part of the tee price. I like the walk, you get out in the country and see wildlife. I've seen herds of deer, coyotes, flocks of turkeys, foxes, Eagles, owls, I saw an eagle catch a jack rabbit on one course. Even in britain you see lots of wildlife. some courses have fantastic views, Pebble beach is a beautiful course, Visited it, not played it, $500 dollars a round with another $100 for the caddy is way to rich for my blood. but I have also plaid beautiful courses in america that have only cost $10 to $25 for a twilight round, usually after 2 or 4 o'clock. Courses in the UK are more expensive but you can still find some great courses for £20 a round. Bath golf club on top of claverton has some great views of bath and witha 2 for 1 voucher used to only cost £20. The Bristol, just off the M5 is a fantastic course with views across the severn. Woodlands near almondsbury has 2 nice courses, one is rather harder than the other. About the only thing about the UK I miss is being able to play golf. the nearest courses here are 250 miles away and cost around 100euros a round.

I prefer to play golf rather than talk whether it's a sport on forums.
It was a sport long before most modern sports were even invented.
Spent 45 years trying to get my handicap into single figures.
Cannot get lower than 12. though.
