Aussie blokes saying it’s “sexist” they can’t wear the comfy clothing item, when women can.

SURF clubs across Queensland are facing backlash for “discriminatory” dress standards that see women able to wear singlets but not men.

Clubs Queensland has reportedly sent out a newsletter to member clubs in order to highlight the issue with this dress rule.

“A prohibition on men wearing singlets is arguably less favourable to men than women who are permitted to wear singlets,” Clubs Queensland said in a March bulletin to its members.

“This will also apply to other prohibitions such as footwear and hats.”

Adding that the controversial dress code “may inadvertently be breaching Australia’s anti-discrimination laws by discriminating on the basis of gender”.

The common differences observed between dressing standards for men and women include:

Men not being permitted to wear hats inside the club
Men’s singlets (or sleeveless T-shirts) being prohibited inside the club, and
Men’s open footwear being prohibited inside the club.

The Anti-Discrimination commission has warned that it is against the law to set different rules for men and women and doing so may be a breach f the federal Sex Discrimination Act.

Coolum Beach Surf Club has already changed this singlet rule, telling the ABC that they were losing customers over the “sexist” dress code.

“We’d have a couple come in they’d both be wearing singlets we’d say yes to her and no to him,” general manager Mal Wright said.

“If people have got a good attitude we want them to be customers at the club, we don’t want them to go away and be unhappy just because of the clothes they’re wearing.”

In response to the question of why this is suddenly an issue now, Clubs Queensland stated in a newsletter that it has been unlawful since the enactment of the Sex Discrimination Act in 1984.

They said that the reason most places are only hearing about it now is that “no one has taken the club to task over it”.

The newsletter stated that any club that refuses entry because of gender-specific dress codes may risk having a discrimination complaint filed against them with the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Why don’t people allow other people to wear what they want?
Stupid, pointless rules.

What's a 'singlet'? Like an undershirt, in the picture? Why don't the guys show up, tits in the breeze? Or is that illegal too?

The better question is, why can't women go topless? I've never understood why something intended to nurture infants is taboo.

same shape as an undershirt but it just made to wear.

'no shirt, no shoes, no service' is the traditional dress code for a lot of the Clubs

women can get away with wearing less clothes and footwear that is basically thongs(flip flops)

I don’t like men in singlets whatever their physique.
And those women never look good in hot pants and Lycra, I agree.

No, sex parts are subject to privacy, if only because sex is for privacy. But tits have nothing to do with sex. It's only because they are taboo that they draw attention.
Proving this, men now go completely topless at beaches, lakes and swimming pools, and no one cares. But topless women are arrested for public indecency. Why is it indecent for women, but not for men?

It's like, if men could go barefoot, but women had to wear shoes. Why on earth? Gender bias much?

We've got a little mission creep going on.  The original topic was legal justification, now it's become "I don't like..." and "never look good..."

Not that I mind, but I'd like to hear some justification for exclusionary laws, and/or even rules.  I genuinely ask: what is objectionable about singlets on men, but not on women?  Or if you like: what is objectionable about topless women, but not men?

It's hardly nudist to dress for the beach. You cast of useless garb for purposes of swimming and sport. You only cover the private parts...men wear swimsuits, not birthday suits. Women should do the same.

sunny

Going another step further...

There are several legal/designated nudist/"clothing optional" beaches in NSW, plus dozens of other beaches near towns and cities where skinny dipping is permissable because they aren't controlled by local councils (they might be in national parks or forestry commision-controlled, or simply fall outside council boundaries..).   Police could be called if a crime has actually been committed (e.g. assaults, threats of violence, thefts..), but usually people are left alone if they behave themselves.

There are over 11,000 beaches around the Oz coastline, with maybe 10,000 of those falling outside of local council controls --  so, if people are willing to travel there are plenty of "free beaches"
around
--  whether or not people choose to surf, swim or 'dive off those beaches then depends on whether they chose to accept the responsibility and risks..

If they simply decide to stay on the beach, then those like eddie could enjoy having their menfolk letting their dingles dangle to their hearts' content  !!!       Shocked

We have several nudist beaches here in California, too. My point is, why is it even an issue? Do we designate "Men's Topless Beach"? Do we even have to? Hell no, it's automatic...a given.

That's the way all beaches should be, for women as well as men. Feeding babies is as asexual as can be.

I have no interest in nudity. The point is, it's not nudity.

If women were not permitted to publicly bare their feet, it would be called 'nudity'. But the real purpose of concealing certain parts lies in their relation to sexuality. There is nothing sexual about feet, or chests. It's an arbitrary decision made by some over-zealous christian fundamentalist.
