13 siblings ages 2-29 held captive in home

Post by Cass on Tue Jan 16, 2018 5:10 am

Oh fucking hell. A couple was arrested after police discovered that their 13 children had been held captive in their California home in filthy conditions, some shackled to beds with chains and padlocks, officials said Monday.Thank god the 17 year old escaped. $9million bail!!!! Hope they fucking rot in hell for ever. I have no more words.

CNN wrote:David Turpin is listed as the principal of the Sandcastle Day School, according to the California Department of Education website. It was operated out of his home, the same nondescript, suburban residence where the 13 victims were found. The day school opened March 21, 2011, and was described as a private school serving grades 1-12. According to the website, the status of the school is "active."

*  *  *  *

David Turpin's mother, Betty, told CNN the couple usually took vacations with the entire family in tow. They have 13 children, she said, and they usually dressed alike when they went out for safety reasons.

"They were very protective of the kids," she said. When they went out, the couple would line the children up according to age, and the parents took their positions at the front and back of the line, she said.

"It was easier to keep up with the kids" that way, she said.

"This is a highly respectable family," she added.

The father, according to Good Morning America, said it was their obligation to have as many children as possible.

It sounds, for all the world, like an FLDS nest.

What I don't get is the one who was 29 could've taken his dad surely, especially if the other older ones helped.

Also there are pics of them in Las Vegas and other places.

I just don't get this at all.

Yeah, they look like they were mostly normal (besides being prolific breeders) at one point taking the kids to Disney and Vegas. The kids in the pics don't look malnourished.

Would a FLDS nest have only one wife and make multiple trips to sin city to renew their vows with an Elvis impersonator?

This is just the breaking article. That the husband says that god insists they have as many children as possible, suggests a religious aspect to their motivation. We need to learn more about their beliefs and the reasons for this travesty.

There are a lot of kooky religious sects about.  We need to learn more about them before we can say which definitively. It sure looks like an FLDS setup.

I disagree. There are too many strange anomalies about in this story, for this to be a normal suburban family.

I agree. That's why I think we need to know more. Why does he say god wants them to have unlimited children. What is the religious motivation, if any?

If we need to know more, then it's irresponsible to say what it sounds like.

But that never stops you does it?

No it's not. People do it all the time. To say this is like that, is a way of making use of metaphor, a linguistic device that is intended to describe something. For example, one might say the Iraq war was much like the Vietnam war...then one explains the similar entailments. Quite common.

You seem to be spoiling for an argument. What is the problem? Are you FLDS? Are you overly sensitive about religion? What is disturbing you?

I'm over sensitive about idiotic comments. How often do FLDS folks go to Vegas with their kids to renew their vows by an Elvis impersonator?

You're comments are completely contradictory. You say there is not enough information to draw any conclusions, then you draw a fucking conclusion. That's some sort of mental illness dude.

Quite a bit.  Southern Nevada is strongly LDS, along with it's neighbors Arizona and Utah.  It's another thing that suggested FLDS to me.

As for the Elvis impersonator, you seem to have a notion that the FLDS are pious.  They are as normal as everyone else, except for their marital practices...which are against the law.

How many times did you just use the word 'you' in a three-line post that says nothing?  When a person is preoccupied with the messenger, rather than the message, one knows that he is spoilin' for a fight.  It's a waste of time, and frankly, boring.

I can go on all day, you know.

About FLDS:

The FLDS has an estimated 10,000 members, most of whom live in Colorado City, Arizona and Hildale, Utah. The group also has followers near Eldorado, Texas, and in South Dakota, Colorado, Nevada, British Columbia, and Mexico.
The spiritual leader of the FLDS church is considered a prophet of God. He is the only person able to perform marriage and can punish followers by "reassigning" their wives and children to other men.

They believe in practicing polygamy.

Critics of the FLDS maintain that underage females are often forced into marriages with older men.
Eleven of 12 suspects from the 2008 raid on the Yearning for Zion (YFZ) Ranch have been tried and convicted on charges of child sexual assault, bigamy, or performing an unlawful marriage. The charges against Lloyd H. Barlow, the doctor indicted on three charges of failure to report child abuse, were dismissed.

So, these kooks in California are no doubt kooks, but they don't fit the narrative of the FLDS based on the information provided. Not that information is important to every poster on this forum. Wink

None. Unless they are now Jack Mormons, They have to go to temple for a marriage ceremony/ sealing and most consider going back to other sealings on their anniversary as a way of recommitting. They can do another ceremony if they married a non- Mormon but generally renew vows ceremonies are frowned upon by the bishops and most regular Mormon wouldn’t do it. It could lead to temple recommends being taken away as well as other liturgical penalties.

As to the polygamy practicing whack jobs, they hold their own ceremonies and would NEVER go to Vegas let alone an Elvis impersonator.

True since it is a truly bogus religion.

Special underwear, sealed for eternity, gold tablets being found in a cave then miraculously disappearing. If you want a lot of laughs, look into it. Hours of hilarity.

Regular Mormons no, the ones who gave up polygamy and child brides are just LDS and make up about 95% of the Mormon faith.

Thanks. I work in a heavily Mormon area, but we also have a lot of Catholics, Baptists and Southern Baptists. There’s even some Quakers. We’ve even got a few fundamentalists (women long hair and long skirts but can show arms and baby creating) but I haven’t quite narrowed down what sect they exactly are.

Well duh! I'm describing your posts which are contradictory. Perhaps I should have said y'all, so as to address all the voices in your head?

Yet you don't care enough to discuss the contradictions?  You continue with your vitriol toward your interlocutor.  We've had a long history on this forum of staying away from attacking the messenger, and keeping to the message.  Unfortunately, that is deteriorating here.  The above is not staying on message.

Maddog wrote:And how many wives did this guy have?

Polygamy is no longer legal.  I'm not arguing that these people are FLDS, only that they have the appearance of something like that.  Rather than drawing that conclusion, I have repeatedly said we need to know more.

Now, earlier I inquired as to why you have such hostility whenever the subject goes to FLDS.  I asked you if you are FLDS, especially as there is a large group in Texas.  I assume, by your silence, that you are.

We also have a policy here of inviting open discussion about religion.  We have members who are Muslim, Christian and others.  We have managed to discuss religion without hostilities...or with only interactive personal remarks.

As long as people keep posting stories about Inland CA, NV, AZ and Utah, you're going to have to get used to it.  Given the interests of so many here on unorthodox family practices, you can't be defensive.  Even the LDS must grow a bit of tolerance.

I've been a bit irritated with you and Ben in regards to Quill. The guy spews all sorts of nonsense, then foreigners eat it up like he knows what he is talking about.

Actually eds, when I brought that ethic over here you were one of the ones who picked up on it. I was quite pleased. You used to keep people in line with the idea.

The name-calling, though obvious, isn't the real problem. That's almost a joke. It's the influx of personal attacks, as opposed to simply disagreeing. You can be a protagonist without being an antagonist. Indeed, bearing hostilities is inartful and, frankly, embarrassing.

I always address the post. I don’t do gangs and I don’t do “I’m on this person’s side because they’re this wing or that wing”

It was an oldtime poster called Spitfire who suggested addressing the post and not the poster, that was one of the best pieces of advice I ever saw online and I always tried to stick to it. That was well before I joined here and one of the reasons Ben gave me when he chose to make me a moderator.

Name-calling is dumb. Okay, I’ll rephrase that: constant name-calling is dumb. There are only a couple of posters who do that continuously, thank goodness.

Huh well that’s news to me. I didn’t know I was needing to be forgiven for anything scratch

Next time that I’m supposed to be responsible for another poster’s words do give me a heads up, there’s a pet.

I just don’t participate in threads that bore me to death. He believes what he wants to believe and you believe what you want to believe. I’m not refereeing for nobody. Unless I get paid. Then we can talk about it.

Anyhoos I’m off to get my hair cut and a pedicure.

Later much Cool

Well, let the serve as an official notice instructing you to keep an eye on him.

I don't care about his opinions, they are his. It's him thinking he gets to have his own facts. Like being some sort of expert on the FLDS and then make the claims he made on this thread.

Children were malnourished. Neighbors had no idea of the ages of the older kids due to stunted growth. This was long time abuse. Apparently, according to law enforcement, the mother was quite puzzled as to why the house was raided. My guess is that she was brainwashed too. They are the biological parents too. My guess is some kind of cult with some religion as they went to Disney/Vegas, and with fundamentalists those places are seen as hell on earth.

I just hope that all the children can get well but they are going to need lots and lots of therapy. I highly doubt the oldest ones will ever be able to live a normal life. This is one trial I am going to look forward to following if only to see them thrown in prison for the rest of their lives.

My sentiments, exactly sass. It's an FLDS thing. And who do we have speaking up for them, but our own personal FLDS spokesperson!

Few people get an inside look, but we've just had it.

I haven't heard anything about a motive yet. Today on Good Morning America, Robin Roberts interviewed the maternal aunt. Other than saying the couple were strict, the aunt didn't touch on a background or motive.
