76 here. Seriously I need some cold please. And rain. No sign if that in the long range forecast. I bought some new sweaters in October and they’re hanging in the closet screaming to be worn.

76°F ?

Had some weeks like that here last Winter...

Sunday was around 40-->>47°+ Celsius down here; this heatwave is hanging around another couple of days yet.

Yes.

We anywhere between 40-45 Celsius on average in summer and the humidity is terrible. Phoenix where one of the juniors lives is about 45-50 but with less humidity. Ugh.

Funny story, my car was fine -- or so I thought. Then, we almost didn't make it home because it turns out I have a major coolant leak! We always have to have a misadventure.

Coolant leak, either a hose loose or split, or leak from Rad, or Gasket on water Pump. Change hose, or if rad, add Radweld ..................just trying to help.

Nah, but I grew up driving old beaters. When they broke I had to fix them. I'm actually a real estate appraiser.

Is it leaking hose, radiator or the water pump?

It will reach the point where it will be cheaper to get a re-cored radiator (with a bigger and better core..), compared to the costs of maintaining a leaking radiator, and the increased risks of overheating next summer...

Unless, of course, you're planning to sell that heap of junk next year..

And replace it with something better like a Ford Ranger ute;  or maybe a VW Amarok V6 (or their softer Toerag 'wagon version, if you wanted to be more sofistikated..).

P.S. I keep the radiator on my Ford Territory filled with a coolant/anti-freeze mixture all-year round; and top it up with the coolant mix' -- using straight tap water to top up a radiator is a sure way to accelerate corrosion.

It’s been that way for over a year, close to 2. It’s ok he only drives it to work and the golf course. When it dies we will get a newer one. It’s a 2003 and we’ve had it 8 years and it’s got over 214,000 on the clock.

Our other car is a 2016 Hyundai Accent - my car, aka the grey goose. It’s zippy and fuel efficient. We’re looking at a Hyundai Tucson as a replacement. He really wants a Ford F-350 but that ain’t happening yet.

Ford Explorers are pretty much crap, these days, in comparison to other similar-sized products...  (Ford stopped exporting them to many overseas markets back in 2005/'06..).

Compared with other Ford products --  the late Aussie Territory, the Ranger ute and its Everest SUV offshoot, even the F150/250 utes  (F350 !  Slight bit of "overkill" there --  you could tow a house with one of those beasts !!)  --  the Explorer has weak spots with its transmission, petrol engines, suspension, general finish, practicality..

Even Toyota and Volkswagen have superior alternatives in that particular SUV/"softroader" segment that the Explorer sits in, with their Prado and Toureg vehicles, respectively.   (Hyundai's Tucson and Santa Fe are okay as smaller town-based weekend-runabouts  --  but with their 4-cyl engines will never have the towing capacity or versatility of the larger-classed vehicles..).

Friends don't let friends drive Fords. Get a GMC or a Ram.

pirat

@Quill :

Mechanically :
Fords and Dodge/Chrysler have better engines and transmissions than GM products..

That's why the F-series Fords always outsell the GM shitheaps..

(And, as a sidenote, GM's best-selling 'Colorado' utes and SUVs aren't even built by Chev'  --  but by Isuzu  !!!)      tongue

For reliability alone --  buy a Toyota, but be prepared to pay a little extra for the privilege.

Nissan isn't that far behind Toyota, either..

Volkswagen's Amarok with the 180 kW diesel option looks quite interesting, too  --  but being the "new kid on the block", it is still early days yet, to see how they hold up over the long term.. And, like the Toyotas, the VWs are selling at premium prices...

I don't know...that Chevy 4.7 (350) Corvette engine I have beat into the ground, and it still comes back for more. It's always available in GMC trucks.

Agree about the Ram...nice truck. The problem I have with the Ford is they are sloppily made. The detail falls off.

Well. Erm. We haven't really left the apartment and had all intentions of getting the leaky car to the garage at about 9:30 this morning (we actually went to bed at 2am like two adults) but it's past midday and we are still kinda nowhere near leaving. So.... Rolling Eyes

Yup. We want to get a 5th wheel so towing a house will be necessary but again that won’t happen for a while so that’s why we’re looking at the Tucson.

I’ve liked the explorer, it’s been a good truck for what we’ve needed.

We still have a 1997 Ford Crown Victoria. Or rather senior junior has had it for almost 2 years and it’s still going great. Has more miles than the explorer.

Well. Erm. We haven't really left the apartment and had all intentions of getting the leaky car to the garage at about 9:30 this morning (we actually went to bed at 2am like two adults) but it's past midday and we are still kinda nowhere near leaving.  So.... Rolling Eyes

lol!

Original Quill wrote:I don't know...that Chevy 4.7 (350) Corvette engine I have beat into the ground, and it still comes back for more.  It's always available in GMC trucks.

Agree about the Ram...nice truck.  The problem I have with the Ford is they are sloppily made.  The detail falls off.

Razz

What the "townies" consider a strong point in their GM pickups -- basicaly a re-purposed Corvette V8
(5.7 litres in the earlier L34 version, 6.3 litres in the current model..)
-- becomes its weakpoint when it comes to rural and heavy-towing applications...

Low revving, high-torque diesel engines rule in rural/backwoods/country regions.

And Dodge and Ford both have superior diesel engines, when it comes to practical use..

These days, though, many people have realised they don't need over-sized thirsty V8 pickups, when most of their time is spent in commuting, and not heavy towing.

Which is why the Ford Ranger (Mazda BT50) and Chev/Isuzu Colorado, along with Toyota's Hilux, are now the top-selling utility/pickup vehicles -- not only in North America, but pretty much everywhere (except maybe China..).

Okay, so Edds beat me at darts. She beat me fair and square and really staged a thrillingly dramatic comeback.

I have to say though, her pleasure at beating me went well past the border of vulgar and straight into taunting territory.

Donno...I'll wait until wolf responds.  He's been rather critical of Land Rovers...particularly their longevity.

He must be referring to the more modern models, because I know from experience and the various classic Land Rover clubs' publications and databases, including the Series 2 Club of which I am a member, that in this country alone there are very many excellent and roadworthy Series 1's, 2's, 2a's and 3's manufactured between 1948 and 1985 still running well and looking as terrific as my own 1971 2a.

I'd say that most of the ones that have gone to the great Land Rover scrap heap in the sky have done so because they were used extensively for extreme and damaging competitive off-roading.
