'Tis said of Norfolk that the population was based on incest and shotgun marriages and that this resulted in some, er, interesting genetic defects. Having six fingers on each hand was one; having webbed feet was another.

If you plan to visit don't expect scenic grandeur, as in the Lake or Peak Districts or in Wales and Scotland, as much of East Anglia including Norfolk is as flat as a pancake. It is, however, known as "the land of the big sky" because one can see from horizon to horizon for miles, and miles, and miles...save for the occasional molehill, that is. Indeed, natives of The Fens are known to need oxygen if they ever reach a height of more than 25 feet!

There's plenty to see and do, however...Norwich is a fine city and there are the Holkham and Blickling estates, Sandringham, etc.

I have booked a holiday cottage on a farm in North Norfolk this May as I don't want to travel far from home this year, but events are conspiring against me being able to take it.

It does sound like a Norse name.

I seem to recall that the first documentary reference was in Anglo Saxon: The North or Northern people/folk. Suffolk was where the South folk lived. Essex and Wessex were the eastern and western lands or kingdoms.

So do I, Cass. The cottage is near Holt, a few miles inland, so crab will most definitely be a regular treat.

One amazing thing is that I made the booking shortly before discovering a long lost cousin who lives just over a mile away from there!

Holt is very pretty. Some great pubs and food between there and Sheringham. How neat about the cousin. Fingers crossed you’ll get there x

Can't think of owt to say except that living in Cromer must be damn nice, for the seafood and the walks along the lovely beach.

Ipswich in nearby Suffolk is where the serial killer son of a police officer murdered six women, most of them prostitutes. The killing spree never put the local prossies off as they were mostly drug addicts needing their daily fix. Sad really. I remember he was finally caught around christmas time, one year.

Geographically Norfolk  (north folk county) sits  on top of Suffolk  (south folk county), both on the coastline. The Scandinavians arrived in their boats, invaded and colonised it centuries ago, didn't mix much and so a fair amount of inbreeding occurred lol.

It is pretty, veya. But I'm worried about that compound with the fence around it in the middle. Penal colony, or Sandals in the Bahamas, Grenada and Barbados?

See, I don't like that. Like Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay, it's not a thing to celebrate.

British empire penal colonies are the foundation of Australia, as one of the older sites it's a bit like plymouth rock.
being founded, not in freedom but harsh oppression is part of what makes the differences in National character.

we're not really beyond it, it has effects on the political outlook both in both foreign and domestic policy. A campaign to make to take Australia back to our old days would not get very far. we're still getting 'great' the first time Cool
Let alone the differences in race relations, since Australia had white convicts instead of black slaves to provide the hard labor needed to establish settlements/infrastructure.

Okay, do we have to champion those days?  We can acknowledge them, but like a statue that is evil, do we have to praise them?

G'Day

That walled garrison would have been built to house the governor and the troopers...

While the convicts roamed over the rest of the island..

What would those convicts back then have thought, being sent away from an overcrowded and grotty 19th century Britain, to be exiled in this corner of paradise  ?       geek

it's only fair that aussies praise the convicts that endured the lash to build the nations foundation,
maybe the USA needs to do more to praise the slaves that built theirs

Ironically your post shows the difference in national character,
you automatically assume we praise those days, when tours of those sites are more solemn remembrance of the suffering and endured hardships of our forebears.

Yeah. Praising suffering...I'm not into that. Maybe if it was clear that you were condemning it, then I could see it. But the icon is ambiguous.

I'm gonna say our Norfolk is better, It's a pristine subtropical island

Such a pretty place with a sad history. Hope to visit one day.
