Our little hedgehog.

Post by Angry Andy on Tue Oct 31, 2017 8:46 pm

Has been visiting us nightly for over 2 weeks. It's  a little bit small, but is troughing huge amounts of dog meat and dried meal worms. It looks a young one but really healthy.
This afternoon I built a proper wooden hibernation hide for Spike, waterproof, windproof and with a snug inside room. Have placed it in his regular run and baited near it and inside it.
It obviously knows colder weather is a comin', and is fattening himself befor his big sleep.
Very pleased with my labours.
I will keep you all appraised of the outcome.

He's living in style! He'll soon have his own hedge fund.
Ha ha ha.

I dropped something once, when I was trying to open my front door in the dark. I bent down to pick whatever it was up and my hand went straight on to the spines of a hedgehog.
Hurt like bloody bugger for ages.

They are a real endanged species in the UK,. Loss of proper gardens, solid fences and pesticides hamper them moving around to get reliable food supplies. Every little helps.

Andy, weigh him if you possibly can...if he weighs LESS THAN 600 grams. get him to a hedgehog rescue center (tiggywinkles of some such) he/she will NOT survive hibernation under that weight and will require keeping warm and fed during the winter.

. Thanks for the advice, Vic, appreciated. My eldest is at home for a few more days. She is a 3rd year zoology undergraduate, has done some modules on hibernating mammals including hedgehogs, and we are on top of the situation..Our problem is he appears to be living under next door's shed. Not ideal as it has rats under it too. I suspect we will try to care for it ourselves. As we are in the south, the proper cold isnt due for 2-3  weeks. We plan to weigh it tomorrow or  Thursday. It looks really fit agile and healthy, so no alarms just yet. The RSPCA is still an option, we have a local centre my daughter has helped out at.
Will keep you updated.
We have plenty of room to keep him over the winter should it be neccessary.

Aww....I hope he survives the winter and doesn't snuggle under anything that the kids might use for bonfires.
If you manage to get any pics HA it would be lovely to see him.

Aren't you supposed to kill hedgehogs because they are pests or something

He is gorgeous Andy thank you. Cool

We used to have a regular visitor, he would wander through the garden at around the same time every night, he was so tame he would eat out of my hand, sadly I haven't seen him for a couple of years now.

I have made space in my shed for iit, if it needs to come inside. Unless we get a Siberian winter, that should be fine.

I read that you shouldn't feed mealworms to hedgehogs.

Homeowners may think they are just being kind by offering their garden visitors a tasty treat. But mealworms can actually cause a painful bone disease in hedgehogs and, in worst case scenarios, result in them losing their ability to walk. The high phosphate levels in theses worms are sapping hedgehogs of calcium and reducing the strength of their bones.
