Dying chimp overcome woth emotion when she is visited by her old human friend.

Get a tissue handy. Crying or Very sad

"This is the heartbreaking moment a dying chimp recognises an old friend and is absolutely overcome with emotion.

Mama the chimp is terminally ill and had been refusing to eat and stayed curled up in a ball until her old pal arrived for a visit.

The 59-year-old from the Royal Burgers Zoo in the Netherlands would not even drink water until Professor Jan van Hooff called to see her.
Mama opens her arms up in an adorable moment of pure joy when she sees the professor, who set up the chimp colony she had been living in.

She screeches with happiness and he cradles her in her final days.
The pair have known each other since 1972 and Professor Hooff wanted to visit his former charge before she lost her fight for life.
Despite being in a state of gloom for several days, the visit was enough to lift Mama's spirits.
Sadly, she passed away just a week after the emotional visit in April last year.
Mama was born in the wild back in 1957 and was the oldest chimp at the zoo at the time of her death."

I saw this last night, oh I felt happy but sad. Such a beautiful story, I had a tear in my eye.

People who say animals have no memory, no feeling couldn't be more wrong.

So true Mags....many animals could teach humans a few lessons.
There are more pics online....the chimp died soon after these pics were taken, I hope she died with contentment.

Its more heartbreaking to me, that such a wonderful animal has been kept so long in captivity.

I am glad also though that she felt some comfort in her dying days, by clearly a caring and wonderful friend she had in the Proffessor.

This bit really got to me, animals can love each other, understand pain, and grieve for loss just as humans can.

I suppose it depends why the chimps were captive in the first place Didge....I hate to see wild animals held in captivity for no reason too.

The zoo seems to be a place that really cares for its animals, a far cry from zoos of old.

Hopefully the animals are happy there...Mama certainly bonded with the keeper who looked after her for so many years..

Jam jars and rubber was not the topic of conversation Eddie. Evil or Very Mad
Ben, in a roundabout way was more on topic than you were, at least his little smiley fit the thread.

No animal belongs in a Zoo. I love animals, all of them. They get a raw deal in the wild, but at least they're free.

I wish these hunters who kill them for sport, were put on the receiving end and hunted by the very animals they murder.

Just goes to show we have no idea what emotions an animals is capable of,
this story is beautiful and sad for many reasons.
The way we still treat animals even though their capacity for love and companionship is becoming more and more evident, is awful. I watched a programme today about an Australian scientific programme to improve the stock. They export millions of live sheep to the Middle east, it takes three weeks by boat, because they prefer to kill them themselves, which entails bludgeoning, throat cutting and for some bizarre reason burying alive, many Australians are very unhappy with . The new scientific programme entails taking the best specimens both male and female and collecting sperm from the males, a reasonably easy, pain free procedure, the ewes are tipped over strapped to a table with their legs retrained, given anethesia, their abdomen is surgically opened and their eggs stripped. The eggs are fertilized and placed in ewes who are not considered genetically
top notch. There is work going on to produce sheep who can make meat more quickly and on less food. I have never seen anything more disturbing. Surely like for instance rice, this kind of genetic manipulation only decreases the gene pool, with rice new strains have to be created every few years what happens when we have such a small gene pool for food animals that things start to go badly wrong for humans, its already going badly wrong for the sheep it seems.

That sounds absolutely horrendous.

I don't believe any of us know what exactly we are eating and how its been produced, we put our faith in the people we buy food from to be selling us exactly what they say they are . Free range, home grown, ethically sourced etc......but then we hear horror stories of the way animals have been treated, food suppliers lying about their produce and so on.

The only way we can really know is if we are self sufficient, and how many of us are that?
