Cambridge students warned Shakespeare plays may distress them

Post by Didge on Wed Oct 18, 2017 8:12 pm

Cambridge University academics have hit out at “trigger warnings” after students were cautioned that Shakespeare’s plays contain potentially distressing topics. English literature undergraduates have been advised that a lecture which focusses on Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus and The Comedy of Errors will include “discussions of sexual violence” and “sexual assault”.

The trigger warnings were published in the English Faculty’s “Notes on Lectures” document, which is circulated to students.

Gill Evans, emeritus professor of medieval theology and intellectual history at Cambridge University, said that the move will leave academics “very annoyed”.

It beggars belief.

What sort of future leaders are going to be produced from such thinking?

Anyway, have a good evening.

Night

I.m sick of putting students into bubbles to protect their lickle minds.

Shakespeare's been doing alright for centuries, now they want to protect them with warnings, bloody stupid. What next, don't read Dickens in case it upsets them that kids were put in workhouses

Most teenagers have been watching gory movies, playing violent internet games, and have had the opportunity to see explicit internet porn at the press of a button for years.

I doubt anything Shakespeare ever wrote will give them nightmares.

Agreed Syl. This is an utter non issue. So a single silly magazine issued a trigger warning. That's hardly enough to condemn an entire generation as so many of you are quick to do.

These are students at one of the most prestigious universities in the world we are talking about. They will obviously know the stories. Meanwhile, they'll be watching the ever so slightly more brutal actions of characters in A Game of Thrones and Walking Dead on TV, and then worse online.

Stop being so quick to judge, and if you ever want to point fingers for any 'failings' of younger generations, point them at yourselves Wink

Surely any finger pointing should be aimed at the head(s) of the English Faculty.

As an English Literature graduate I would, frankly have felt that I was being ridiculously (and insultingly) patronised.

Mind you, that was a long, long time ago and things have changed......

Such a non issue that is now becoming a daily occurance through Universities in the west.

This is not a one off.

http://dailysignal.com/2017/09/08/berkeley-offers-students-counseling-to-cope-with-shapiro-speech/

I mean when there is speakers like recently in the US with Ben Shapiro, who is merely a conservative. Students were offered council pre his talks.

So people are aghast how pathetic such institutions have become and are making Universities. Not a place of learning or to challenge views, but a place to mollycuddle people.

I will only agree on one point, those parents that mollycuddled these students as children and clearly still do, that have made them such pathetic snowflakes.

If a person gets to their teens and is worried by a little violence in a Shakespeare play, then mummy and daddy have a lot to answer for.
