Magic Mushrooms Can 'Reset' The Brains Of People With Depression

Post by Didge on Sat Oct 14, 2017 10:36 pm

First topic message reminder :

A psychedelic chemical found in magic mushrooms can "reset" the brains of people with untreatable depression, a study suggests. The small study gave 19 patients with depression a single dose of psilocybin which produced "rapid and sustained antidepressant effects."
Around 50 percent of those who took part described an "afterglow" effect that lasted up to five weeks.

Many of the patients said "I've been reset, reborn, rebooted", and one patient said his brain had been "defragged and cleaned up."

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, showed psilocybin affected two key areas of the brain:

(1) The amygdala - which is heavily involved in how we process emotions such as fear and anxiety - became less active.

(2) The default-mode network - a collaboration of different brain regions - became more stable after taking psilocybin.

Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, head of psychedelic research at Imperial College London, said, "We have shown for the first time clear changes in brain activity in depressed people treated with psilocybin after failing to respond to conventional treatments."

Larger studies are still needed before psilocybin could be accepted as a treatment for depression. Scientists also warned against depressed patients self-medicating with the hallucinogenic drug.

I think that shows patience and you shouldn't be slating her for it. It kinda gets really tiresome when posters keep insulting. You either ignore the poster or the post.

I know exactly what you mean, kinda like the "hunters instinct" which I posess, wherby I can track "prey" even when its out of immediate sight...(and not only prey, i can track any living target reasonably close....so my missus cant lose me in a supermarket, I can always find her, no matter where she goes, or come to that even in our woodland. I can also do the opposite and "hide" my presence, to the point where I can simply "not wish to be seen" and thus go unremarked almost anywhere...spooky but true....and I never thought about it being odd till someone pointed out that they had been looking for me , when I didnt want to be found, (the ex mother in law) and had literally walked past me 3 times within a few feet. I then started to take note of this and have observed similar a number of times...

now if you think about it this MUST be a natural ability, supressed in most folks, since as ancient man we must have relied on both the ability to track prey, and to hide our presence both from our prey and to avoid being prey to other hungry beasties who would consider home whatever a small but tasty snack between real meals.

dunno, It would be interesting to talk to some of these primitive peoples that still rely on hunting to see how their experience compares.....but I'm willing to bet that they would not see anything odd about it.

As I have said before to you...my training as a youth was in sciences (medical microbiology and pharmaceutical chemistry) and then went off at a tangent into electronics, but ONE thing that stands out from that is that at time science (and scientists) can be both arrogant and insular. The "scientific method is fine as far as it goes and HAS to be imposed on important and "life affecting" discoveries, that is to be said they NEED to be verified and duplicated, BUT there is a whole world out there too that defies duplication on demand, and yet is supported by any amount of "subjective" but continuous observations sopanning many years and countless subjects, not all odf which are from one group or indeed from groups in contact with each other.

I have on a number oof occaisions pointed out that in regards of almost ALL science fields "the scientific method" rules supreme, yet ONE stands out , and affects everyone...psychology, NONE of its work passes the test of the "scientific method"...EVER, It is NOT repeatable on demand, and is the end result merely of the statistical analysis of numerous subjective observations made. Make of that what you will. The science of the mind is almost pure philosophy, married to statistics and IMO also depends on several flawed assumptions, the chief of which is the definition (by itself) of the society within which the psychology is developed.

Thus it seems to me that the "science of the mind" is both woefully short of data, and woefully short of any sort of structured approach, without which we cannot begin to assess the to us "stranger" aspects of experiences, they are simply dismissed as "hallucination" (and thus clearly of no deep scientific import). hmmmph...

example...some years ago, just after i divorced my ex, I went looking for a house to buy, found one, not too dear, in a relatively decent area etc etc ...went to visit it with mother in tow....

walked through the door ...and....wham, hit by the most horrible feeling of a malign presence....looked at mother who was as fey as they come (but would never admit it ...it scared her witless), and she had turned white., walked around all downstairs, which was nicely decorated, then went up the stairs, every tread was a fight against the instict to run....and at the top of the stairs,...well I cant say exactly WHAT I felt, given that training and "common sense" said "rubbish" but the hairs on the back of my neck stood up...I'd got hackles like a scared cat..... AND boy was THAT spot COLD...subjectively (even though sense says it was improbable, given the physics of it all) about some 10 degrees colder than outside......at that point I gave up, and left ...much to mothers relief....

on the way home we both said...murder had been done in that house, which given the redecoration was entirely possible...

some months later and with a bit of digging here and there I found out that murder had indeed been done, violent and foul, and to an entirely innocent victim....RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THOSE STAIRS....... pale I am quite sure that what I felt wasnt a "ghost" or any other disincorporated spirit after revenge, Nor I'm equally sure was it some sort of remnant of the perpetrator....I do however beleive that muder act itself left some sort of trace of its malign (I deliberately avoid the use of the word "evil" ) self..

It was, to put it mildly, a most unpleasant sensation, and one I have not come across since.

Science explains what iut can explain very well indeed, and with each new "discovery" extends both what it can explain and/or improves its explanations....but what it cant explains ...it runs from like a scared rabbit.......

however as quantum science expands I have a feelin g that the wierd (or even the wyrd) maight just become more common place....indeed I have this itchy feeling that we may yet discover things that really, no really, dont want to be discovered, or perhaps even things we would rather NOT (as in "nope I REALLY didnt want to know that, and would you KINDLY send it back to whence it came) be discovered.....I hope we can handle them......

Yes I completely see what you were saying... I'm just raising the possibility that what you said, and my example, are both possible effects that are achievable from the same 'power source'...

Prime example... how many times have you been out and about, and found yourself randomly looking at some stranger in the crowd for a few moments, only to have them turn round and look straight at you, as if they 'felt' your gaze...?

Or how many times have you looked round for no apparent reason, but straight at some stranger who was looking at you...?

I have heard it said by an ex-special forces guy I knew, that they are told not to look at any civilians/targets too long while 'in cover' as they might 'be felt' by this, and alert enemy of their presence etc...!

Also... I did a little 'these are not the droids' trick the other day in a petrol garage... I needed to use air pump on tyre, and it was 'token' use only at a cost of 50p from guy on till... I went in saying I needed to use air machine... He sternly said 'yes, you need a token, and that's 50p'... I said 'Come on, you're not going to charge me 50p for that, are you!?'... To which he immediately replied (sheepishly) 'No of course not, if you don't want to pay 50p for one, you can just have one for free!'...!!!
