School bans skirts to make uniform gender neutral for transgender students

Post by Guest on Wed Sep 06, 2017 2:20 pm

First topic message reminder :

Parents have criticised a school which has banned girls from wearing skirts to make the uniform gender neutral for transgender students. Priory School in Lewes says from now on, all new Year 7 pupils must wear trousers.

Headteacher Tony Smith also brought in the measure to deal with complaints from parents about short skirts.

Instead of wearing a grey skirt, girls must now must wear grey trousers. But some parents feel angry trousers have been enforced at the Sussex school, which is rated good by Ofsted.

One mother, who did not want to be named, said: "My daughter and her friends are appalled by this.

"The school is creating a hostile environment for girls by treating their views with contempt: there was no consultation. It was just imposed by the head.

"The hypocrisy is what gets me the most. If girls dressing differently than boys is now to be considered sexist, then it is equally sexist to have female teachers wearing skirts and not wearing ties.

"If they want this, they must live the values they force on others and go fully gender free."

Mother-of-four Lara, who did not want to give her surname, said: "My daughter said she has got a gender and it's female so being gender neutral when she has got a gender is a big deal for her, as she proud to be a girl.

"I'm not saying the skirts being worn last year weren't obscene, but it hasn't stopped the issues as those children are in the school for the next four years and are not being made to wear trousers.

"If the headteacher was going to bring this in, he should have done it across all years. "As a mum I feel girls should be allowed to wear skirts if they want to.

So one school, and talk about how they have institutionalized them on wearing a uniform, denying them individuality.

Historic traditions?

Really

Does anyone really want to go there.??

Show me a consensus of all school children on uniforms.

Sorry but yet again invoking what I can only describe is a load of crap.

Don't be so rude.

You can have the same pride of a school without a uniform.

A uniform bonds the pupils together, gives a good sense of community.

Well kids are not going to learn how to deal with problems of shaming and bullying. By trying to for some days of the week, poorly attempt to dress them up as the same.

I suspect you have never been that kid with the cheap clothes, or the parent who sees their child upset because they haven't got the same designer brands or cool trainers as his mates.

I mean how many here have felt silly when they have turned up out and someone is wearing the exact same top as you?

Never....I always feel good in what I wear, if someone else has the same good taste, well done to them I say. Wink

Do you know why, we all want to be individuals and uniforms deny that.

Looking the same doesn't mean BEING the same. The opposite argument could apply, kids will do better in order to stand out.

Schools are compulsory, and thus not like the army, or the Police ect, of which the later are active choices people make as a career.

Yes....so what?
Kids love dressing up in uniforms, they pretend to be policemen, nurses, soldiers even before they start school....it makes them happy, why try to deny them that happiness Thor.   Evil or Very Mad

Finally, my whole point is that kids should never be shamed by what they wear, and a uniform stops all that nonsense and one upmanship.

The uniform originated in Charity institutions.

"Uniforms give schools a sense of identity and cohesion," said author and historian Alexander Davidson.
"When some aspects of society have become much less certain, uniforms suggest schools are there to provide certainty and order."

"There is an economic aspect to many schools' decision to adopt a uniform," said Andy Gibbs, curator and manager of the British Schools Museum.  "It brings equality to the clothes children wear in school, regardless of how wealthy their parents are. The widespread use of polo shirts as part of uniforms, for example, is a way of making them more affordable."

And whether the school attire is a fashion statement or a more relaxed affair, wearing a uniform seems surprisingly important to many pupils.

In 2011, Christ's Hospital surveyed its pupils to find out if it should keep its distinctive 16th Century style blue coats and yellow stockings.

About 95% said they should.

"It is important to stick to our historic traditions, not only to be unique and special, but it makes a sort of unity between us," said one.  "I personally feel proud walking around in my uniform, despite what people might say."

That all makes sense.

Each and everyone of us wanted to better our lives. I had to wear a Uniform, which I often broke the rules. This did not stop me achieving. As did all my siblings and we even went out to find part time jobs so we could afford to buy things for ourselves. So I dealt with people mocking the poor quality of my clothes and the state mu uniform was in. Very worn and not new like the rest. So please spare me the crap over what I understand. Kids soon get past such silliness, when they start to get on.

Its you denying many kids happiness by forcing them to wear what you want and if a kid wants to wear a uniform, that is there choice. Which means the same should apply to those who do not want to wear. Though for some reason, your warped view only applies to children who want to wear the uniform.

Exactly. It allows pupils to concentrate on their schooling and stops them being teased or feeling that they're better than others because of they wear .

It does not stop any teasing what so ever.
In fact even worse it attempts to push such a problem to one side in school and fails appallingly.
It does nothing to help them concentrate for those who do not feel comfortable wearing

Children should know that they can't always do what they want. That prepares them for adult life.

Like being forced into religion from birth?

Everyone knows they cannot always get what they want.

Its not about that, but about doing away from something that is simple not necessary.

Even more when its known some children clearly do not feel comfortable in uniform when studying.

This is even more of a problem in the summer time with the heat and the cold in winter.

Kids dont decide the rules...

Parents apply to schools for their kids to be accepted as students and allowed to attend...

The schools have certain rules which must be followed by applicants...

If the kids dont like it... then they should take it up with their parents who signed them up to the school and its rules, as the parents are the legal custodians of the children, legal responsibility for them, have power of control over them, and to decide what they should do...!!!

Abide by the rules or fuck off elsewhere!!!

I never did abide by the rules at school and was always breaking them. It helps to have a long line of brothers that went there before me.

Anyway, as interesting as this is, I have things to do.
Plus also Tommy is no doubt going to start on one of his flawed circular arguments.

Have a good evening everyone
