Moving to the UK: a huntsmans story

Post by veya_victaous on Tue Jul 25, 2017 10:50 am

A HUGE spider stowed away 16,000 kilometre from Australia to Britain by hiding in a family’s belongings.

The 18cm huntsman was found in a shipping container at a removals firm in Mertsam, Surrey.

The giant arachnid had hitched a ride from Brisbane to Britain and was found among suitcases, reports The Sun.

It turned out he had survived by eating locusts which were also among the belongings.

Shocked staff immediately called the RSPCA who managed to safely confine the large spider without being bitten.

Animal collection officer, Annie Janes said: “From the empty locust shells found in the container it seems he has thankfully been able to find food during that length of time, but it’s a long time to go without water, and he’s lucky he didn’t get squished by any boxes or furniture.

In Phoenix and Tempe we have (had -- I don't live there now) wolf spiders and tarantulas, that size and bigger.  They may be scary, but they keep down the population of crickets and scorpions, their natural food.

It's not very nice when you get up to go pee in the middle of the night, and find a bark scorpion on the seat you're about to sit on.  You learn to love those spiders.

cheers
