Australia human history 'rewritten by rock find'

Post by Guest on Thu Jul 20, 2017 12:11 pm

Archaeologists have found the first evidence to suggest that Aboriginal people have been in Australia for at least 65,000 years.

The discovery indicates their arrival on the continent was up to 18,000 years earlier than previously thought.
It was made after sophisticated artefacts were excavated from a rock shelter in the Northern Territory.
Researchers unearthed what they say are the world's oldest stone axes and ochre crayons, thought to be used for art.
The research, which has been peer-reviewed, was published in the journal Nature.
It is based on findings at the Madjedbebe shelter, near Kakadu National Park.

Arrow          When I was still at school it was thought that Aborigines first settled here around 40--45,000 years ago...

Then that figure gradually stretched out to "50--55,000 years ago.." as they found more evidence and did more carbon-dating..

Now it seems it could have possibly been another 10--15,000 years earlier still;  (though, I don't see how the author of that latest study works out "up to 18,000 years earlier.."  ?)

This would also mean that those early wanderers were travelling 'out of Africa', across Asia and down through Indonesia a good 10,000 years or more earlier than previously thought --  not only rewriting Oz's history, but potentially also that of S.E.Asia and a few South Pacific islands, as well..  If those archeologists' conclusions are proven to be correct.         afro
