Treat the sums as cumulative, and you will see the pattern.

5 + (2+5) = 12; 12 + (3+6) = 21; 21 + (8+11) = 40

Think you will find it is 96

5 + (2+5) = 12
12 + (3+6) = 21
21 + (4+7) = 32
32 + (5+8 ) = 45
45 + (6+9) = 60
60 + (7 + 10) = 77
77 + (8 + 11) = 96

Standard practice to miss out stages to fool you.

Of course, but to drop stages is to change the equation, since the equation is cumulative. The cumulative sum of the model given (on line 4) is: 21 (8+11) = 40.

Sorry Quill, but it's a standard IQ question, it isn't only to see if you can work out the pattern, but also that you can calculate the stages of the pattern that are missing.

To be honest the first thing I did was look at the middle row and see the 1,2,3, and the 4,5,6 and knew that 8 and 11 didn't make sense....plus they do usually miss a few lines out in these type of puzzles.

That's the bigger pattern that sassy is talking about.

However, sassy is seeing the forest, but missing the trees. The standard pattern is not followed here...sometimes you have to pay attention to the detail, when your expectation is to leap to the conclusion of the standard pattern.

Sorry Quill, but as I said, it's a STANDARD IQ test, done the same thing many times and others like it, both in IQ tests and tests like the Morrisby Profile, it is designed to catch you out from not notiicing the missing stages. If you miss out the stages and don't recognise that you cannot logically jump to the 8 +, you fail.

Apparently, the standard usage wasn't what was intended here.  If it were, it would have been asked that way?

This same test can be used to identify those who see exceptions, or as I say, see the trees from the forest.  It is used to select those who follow linear reasoning (directions) as distinct from those who leap to metaphorical short-cuts (pattern recognition).

The question was simply, can you see it? The challenge is to resist the temptation to see the pattern.

There are two logics involved. One is pattern recognition. one is linear.

But the real question is what use to make of it. Those interested in the aptitude utility...the military, for example, might ask who will follow directions...will choose the linear path. Those interested in patterns, will choose the other path.

Quill, there is one logic involved. Being able to dissect the question and take in ALL the information, including that which is deliberately not given. I never read the Mail, but do look at Didge's link, the words 'Can you see it' are not used, I presume HT decided they made a good title.

he did it via saying

multiply the numbers and add

2 x 5 = 10 + 2 = 12
3 x 6 =18 + 3 = 21

8 x 11 = 88 + 8 = 96

One of my hobbies when I bored is maths puzzles solving, my favourite is the The I.   They have a suduko that is not only the 9 boxes but has a shape of a lower case i in it and 1 - 9 not only has to go in each box, but in the 'i' shape as well.

I can't really be bothered with this sort of nonsense, but I did look at it, and came up with 40.

This puzzle went viral cos different people see different things. Like that dress where some thought it was white & gold and others thought it was blue & black.

Myself I saw 96 more or less instantly. Couldn't work out why some people saw 40. Laughing

I feel 96 is a more logical answer ...... cos I'm probably biased here.  Laughing

No, the true reason is cos the formula that gives you 96 holds true in ALL instances. Unlike the formula that gives you 40!
