Australia Will Finally Ban Cosmetic Testing on Animals

Post by Guest on Sun Jul 16, 2017 9:19 am

Last week, a bill was put before the House of Representatives that would ban animal testing of industrial chemicals intended solely for use in cosmetics. The proposed bill would affect a wide variety of products: “cosmetics” are legally defined as any substance used on the body, or in the mouth to change its appearance, cleanse it, perfume it, or protect it. This includes soaps, shampoos, moisturizer, hair dye, perfumes, and deodorants.

It’s difficult to know exactly how many animals will be affected by this ban, as companies do not advertise their use of animal testing and results are often unpublished. It’s likely to be relatively small, but this ban will both improve their lives and be an important international signal.

Cosmetic testing commonly measures the reaction of animals’ skin, eyes, and respiratory tracts to high concentrations of certain chemicals. Other tests determine a product’s potential to cause fetal abnormalities, cancer, or genetic mutations.

Good. Surely all the ingredients for cosmetics have been invented or used by now, so there's no need to keep testing them. It's a big selling point too - lots of people just don't want to use cosmetics which have been tested on animals, or have ingredients which have been tested on animals. Of course, most of the ingredients have probably been tested on animals at one point, but nothing's perfect.

What happens is that the animal testing then goes to countries that allow it. So, while it gets banned in our 'civilised' countries, the testing continues elsewhere. China actually demand that cosmetics be tested on animals. Which doesn't surprise me.

Cosmetic companies do usually state if the product has been tested on animals, but they need to go further and state that none of the individual ingredients have been tested on animals. They probably won't do that though because they can't state that the ingredients have never been tested on animals. They could state that they made best efforts to source ingredients which haven't been tested recently though.

There are a lot that don't test at all. They are listed on the PETA website. But the biggies, Estee Lauder, Unilever etc. All test on animals.

I didn't think anyone tested on animals anymore. This should be stopped, no need to do this.

Smile

This legislation is long overdue...

I remember this subject being debated back in the 1970s and 1980s..
