Is it 'disgusting' to keep your washing machine in the kitchen? Kirstie Allsopp sparks heated debate

Post by Guest on Tue Jul 11, 2017 3:36 pm

Television presenter Kirstie Allsopp has prompted a fierce debate over whether washing machines belong in kitchens. Allsopp, who co-presents the property show Location Location Location, believes the practice of doing laundry in the kitchen is "disgusting".

Responding to a post on Twitter from a journalist about how Americans find the location of the appliance in British homes confusing, Allsopp said: "It is disgusting, my life's work is in part dedicated to getting washing machines out of the kitchen."

Arrow

You won't see such idiotic nonsense in Aussie or Kiwi kitchens, either...

Where kitchens are for cooking, and sometimes eating --  And our building standards define doorways separating food preparation areas from laundies and bathrooms, with two doorways separating the toilet (or a bathroom with a dunny..) from other rooms.

Having washing machines (or bath tubs, as shown in some old British movies and early TV shows) in kitchens is frowned upon in many parts of the developed world, not just in some parts of the USA..

If some Brits prefer to prepare food, cook and dine in their laundries, bathrooms or toilets, that's their choice...

That's all very well but many UK homes don't have utility rooms or outhouses or cellars to put a machine in. You shouldn't be labelled 'disgusting' because you only have the kitchen to put the thing in. How many people have been killed/poisoned etc by a washing machine? It's more disgusting to not wash your hands before preparing food.

Mine is in the out house, but if I never had that it would have to go in kitchen. Most people have theirs in the kitchen, no laundry rooms in houses and definitely not in flats.

American homes have washrooms built in, as do my friends in Australia. I think they may add them to new houses now, but its up to the builders.

I don't understand something....what, exactly, is "disgusting" about a washing machine in the first place? You put dirty clothes in it, they get cleaned, then they come out clean.

I don't suppose people who have washing machines in their kitchen, bring their soiled clothes into the kitchen and waft them around the food, rubbing their underwear on the cutlery and taking their socks and wiping the fillet steak with them.

And if clothes are so unsanitary - shouldn't we be cooking naked then?

What a load of absolute fuckeries.

tongue

My parents' house had an outside "dunny down the back" until the 1970s, when an extension on the back of the house included a new laundry with a inside toilet adjacent to it....

One lot of grandparents were out on the fringes, and their place didn't even get a proper town sewerage connection until the 1980s, when they put in an inside toilet at that time..

You can still occasionally find some former backyard dunny sheds still in existence in some places, now being used as garden sheds.

Down here, and over in Yankee Land, "outhouse" refers to an outside/backyard toilet building --  as in the proverbial Aussie "dunny down the back".

An outside building containing the laundry, maybe a 'mud room', maybe with an extra shower, and perhaps a side room for the toilet, is more commonly referred to as a 'wash house', or maybe something like a 'wet room' or a 'utility room'..

Washhouses these days are more likely to be found out in rural areas, and are pretty much a rarity in the suburbs...

Funny how we have different words for things.

Outhouse I suppose is a utility room, but I still call them out houses or washrooms lol.

I wonder. Does the same standard apply to automatic dishwashers. My jeans never get that dirty.

My washing machine is in the kitchen and that's where it's staying.
Maybe Kirsty Allsops washing is more rank than most.

When my OH worked he picked her up in the cab a few times, he said she came across as a real snob.

No. I live in an old Victorian house.   The outhouse is a brick construction attached to the outrigger.  It was originally the wash-house and had its own chimney.   A  utility room is usually an actual room within the house.

That looks pretty.
We had an outside toilet in the backyard when we were growing up. It was painted white inside. My horrible sister used to draw really lifelike spiders on the walls which would really scare me. No

I have always liked Kirstie, she scrubs up well and she is a good presenter, but I am starting to think she's a bit daft.
Does she think everyone has a utility room?  Shocked  Shocked Don't be ridiculous, Kirstie.
