Jeremy Corbyn Playing ‘Political Football With Grenfell Tower Fire’, Sajid Javid Says

Post by Thorin on Wed Jul 05, 2017 7:15 pm

Sajid Javid has accused of Jeremy Corbyn of playing “political football” with the Grenfell Tower fire. The Communities Secretary said the Labour leader had politicised the tragedy that killed at least 80 people, when he said “austerity and cuts played their part” in causing it. Javid’s attack comes as he was accused of shifting blame for the blaze onto councils in a speech to local Government leaders. In a Channel 4 News interview to be broadcast tonight, Javid told Jon Snow: “I’m afraid that Jeremy Corbyn has treated this like a bit of political football and that is a shame.

“As the prime minister said in response to Jeremy Corbyn’s comment: Let’s all be honest. Let’s be honest with the public. That’s what the public deserve.”

“There have been mistakes and the enquiry will probably show this under successive governments of all political colours in both local government and national government and if we are truly to learn the lessons of this, there’s no point in kicking this around as some kind of football.

“It’s actually understanding and being honest about what’s gone wrong.”

Javid also confirmed in the interview that cladding from 190 high rises had failed fire safety tests the Government had ordered since the Grenfell fire.

He added: “Still samples are coming in but in terms of what happens next it’s very important that as soon as those housing associations are informed of having the wrong type of cladding, that they with their local fire rescue service immediately take action.

Every decision that led to that fire was political. If people being burnt to death because of political decisions can't be said to be political, I don't know what is.

Interesting as we have not had the inquiry yet and as seen some already claim this is political.

How many councils were Labour that used this cladding?

yep, the fire regs legislation in 2005 was political, the eu directives implemented in 2008 or 9 were political.
However corbyn and his most loyal acolytes do not care about any of that, they just want to crawl over the dead and smoking bodies to score political points against the tories.
Any enquiry needs to look at all the possible causes including the original designs of tower blocks with only a single staircase, fire regs, eu directives, the emergency services telling people to remain in place as well as the materials used.
All these buildings that have now failed fire safety regs, passed them again and again over the last decade or more since this cladding went up.

It would seem that every building clad since the late 2000's has failed to be safe. That cannot be laid at the door of any one council or person.

PS david Lammy is just a closet racist

Yes and Corbyn's role is to be an effective oppostion leader and challenge and criticise the govt. Democracy demands this.

Who CARES if Javid calls it a political football game, a game of chess or a game of tag? Corbyn is doing what he was elected to do, full stop.

So many scandals keep leaking out - like the safety inspector who was paid £250K of taxpayers money over 7 years - he advised them to bury his critical reports. Shocked

Let alone the desperate letters from residents that predicted Grenfell would go up in smoke, which the council ignored.

You are utter filth, closet racist for standing up for his constituents who burnt to death, including one of his friends, while taking benefits from a country that you must despise, because after all, it's full of Muslims, but you don't care about that when they are handing their money over to you.

Government ministers ‘congratulated themselves’ for cutting fire regulations

Conservative ministers were proud of slashing fire regulations, just months ahead of the Grenfell Tower block blaze.

In February this year, ministers posted on a government website details of their ‘anti-red tape’ agenda on new-build properties.

In a separate report fire safety inspections, the Conservatives said, had been reduced for some companies from six hours to just 45 minutes.

The move, titled Cutting Red Tape, was part of the Tory plans to abolish a ‘health and safety’ culture that they claimed was hurting money-making businesses.

Residents in Grenfell Tower block have complained that their homes were not properly fire-safe including lack of sprinklers and alarms.

Former Prime Minister David Cameron promised to abolish the ‘albatross’ of ‘over regulation’.

He said in 2012 that a Conservative government would: ‘Kill off the health and safety culture for good’.

The death toll from the fire in Kensington is expected to rise to almost 100.

More than 2,400 pieces of regulation have been scrapped since Cut Red Tape began.

Sajid Javid, the business secretary, launched the Cutting Red Tape initiative in 2015 following the Conservative election victory.

On the official government website it said that it ‘aims to get rid of unnecessary bureaucracy.

‘It intends to shine a light on out of date legislation and confusing implementation of it, such as unhelpful government guidance or needlessly complex inspection regimes, to ensure they make sense.

‘Businesses with good records have had fire safety inspections reduced from six hours to 45 minutes, allowing managers to quickly get back to their day job.’

The group describe their purpose as working ‘with business, for business’.

The reference to the 2013 slashing of fire regulation for new-builds had previously been ‘welcomed‘ by the Chief Fire Officers Association.

However, a cabinet committee was still in operation before the General Election, called the Economy And Industry Strategy (Reducing Regulation).

I'm not sure what this chap is saying. He's talking about "vulnerable" people, but does he just mean they were vulnerable because they didn't have fire extinguishers or what? I can't see how they were vulnerable generally, unless they were disabled or something.
