Abbott may strip ABC of international service in deference to Murdoch

Post by >THE Ben Reilly< on Fri Jan 31, 2014 6:46 am

Another signal has emerged that the Abbott government intends to strip the ABC of its international broadcasting service – the Australia Network – in a significant concession to Rupert Murdoch and to conservative commentators critical of public broadcasting.

The foreign affairs minister, Julie Bishop, has been preparing the public ground since opposition for the ABC to lose its Australia Network regional broadcasting service, which it was awarded by the previous Labor government after a bitterly contested process.

In January Bishop criticised the quality of the programming on the Australia Network, and argued it was not serving Australia’s regional interests as “a tool of public diplomacy”.

The Australian newspaper reported on Thursday that the service was likely to be scrapped in the May budget as a savings measure. The commission of audit established by the government will also run the ruler over other ABC services.

Bastard! It's like he's got the handbook of evil and is following it to the letter.

Seems if you have enough money you can get anyone to do anything.

Cool   THERE are a thousand and one things that ABBOTT&Hockey may try to do to the ABC network (and it's' sister' SBS networks..) services this year and next...

ESPECIALLY considering that Abbott's planned "enquiry" vendetta hasn't even begun yet !
IT IS still early days yet..

IT'S not as IF any of this was unexpected, though..   Suspect

THESE attacks on the ABC and SBS were predicted pre-election back in April/May last year - and the non-aligned GetUp!, change.com, SumOfUs, Care2Causes and similar activist/protest sites have been carrying stories and discussions for months; while local newspapers and groups have picked it up in recent weeks.

IT"S NOT totally unexpected nor unprecedented though ~ as the Abbott-Hockey-Bishop antipathy towards the national broadcaster goes right back to their university politicking days !    Idea
