General election 2017: Tory plan to let young erase online past

Post by eddie on Sun May 14, 2017 4:03 pm

The Conservatives say they want to give people the power to demand social media companies delete any embarrassing content they posted as children.
The largest firms would be required, if requested, to erase material created by someone before they turned 18.
Ministers hope for co-operation from the likes of Facebook and Twitter but may impose fines if they do not comply.
Labour said despite the "tough talk" ministers had proved unwilling to "stand up" to the industry in the past.
But Home Secretary Amber Rudd told BBC 5 live the party had had "early conversations" with social media companies which indicated they were willing to work with the government on introducing "new protections against internet harms" if the Conservatives win the election.

At present, users can delete their profile on social media accounts if they want to get rid of embarrassing content, but this risks losing all their online connections with people.
Ms Rudd said further safeguards were needed to ensure that "inappropriate" content from yesteryear did not become a hindrance for people when they starting applying and being interviewed for jobs.

The right to remove, which would be introduced via legislation, would apply to users of "major" social media platforms and cover all of their own records before adulthood.
Tory sources said the plan was not "overly prescriptive" and indicated that the question of content being tagged and shared by other people would have to be addressed.
The Conservatives also want to make it easier to conduct business online, by introducing the right to insist on a so-called digital signature as a replacement for signing a contract by hand.
The Conservatives want the social media industry to find technological changes that will protect minors from images of pornography, violence and other age-inappropriate content on social media, app stores and websites.

Anyone think this is a good idea? I can see both sides.

I see one side

Should people be accountable for what they have said?

Yes

You cannot erase history and should be accountable for what you said or did.

However, if you change your stars and look to protect those who once were discriminated. Then even more people need to listen to your life story.

I sort of agree with you about owning what you say, because I think it's important that people do that. It may make people think twice about what they say.

However. When you're a child - and some children, wrongly in my opinion, have online accounts - do you really understand the implications of what you're writing? Parents are stupid to allow children social media accounts imo.

Free speech laws are not applied to children Eddie

I agree on your point throughput.

They should just delete their Facebook accounts and start new ones. They can find their old contacts again. They could also go back and erase single posts anyway.

A good idea on the whole imo BUT hopefuly it will not give kids carte blanche to post whatever the hell they like, in the safe knowledge that they would be able to wipe it when they reach 18 yrs.

I would personally prefer the age of erasure to be lowered to 15, at which age, SURELY they should know right from wrong. When two ten year olds systematically tortured and murdered little Jamie Bulger, it opened up a general public dialogue about the age of responsiblity and it was judged that 10 yo's should know right from wrong.

That's my line of thinking actually Jules and let's be honest, parents shouldn't be allowing children of ten access to social media sites, but they do.

Nothing on line can be truly erased, tbh - thanks to google caches. But big sites like FB and twitter should be able to delete stuff from their own sites,  on request.

If kids are routinely posting awful stuff it's a reflection on their parents, in two ways. First off it means they are not being adequately supervised - and I won't hear any different, sorry!

Secondly it means they were badly dragged up, in the first place. The average kid does not usually take delight in bullying others in a chronic way, the sort of bullying that sometimes results in suicides.

Indeed, they certainly shouldn't. I'm not on FB or twitter and I did not realise that kids that young could use these sites.

I guess they just blag their way in - like these 12 yo kids  who purchase thousands of £££ worth of stuff using their parents credit cards.

I ALWAYS wonder about the upbringing of extreme RW women. I think it all starts out like this - indoctrination by the parents.

This little girl standing there, enjoying the sight, must have grown up to be an extreme alt-right creature, and then continued to pass her nazi attitudes down successive generations of women.

NO APOLOGIES for posting this pic, cos the wicked, evil truth should never be hidden. Cruelty was used as entertainment in the deep south -, lynchings, bear baiting, cockfighting ....

I'm convinced this is how extreme alt-right women were originally created.

how?

It can pass laws..... that don't effect facebook and other social media sites that are run for overseas on overseas servers the most if could do it stop them having .uk addresses which they probably don't give a shit about.

Basically this is not possible to enforce.

I totally agree with the not erasing the past about hanging black men, slavery etc that should never be forgotten as it was appalling. Can't get over the girl and others faces.

Just like back in medieval days watching people burned at the state, hangings etc, it was entertainment!

not one of her best ideas, if nothing else you should be able to be reminded of what utter nonsense you might have spouted when a yoof.

this is somewhat similar to the way crooks can get their indiscretions erased from google. If you are a crook everyone should be able to see that you are.
