South American tribe found to have the healthiest hearts ever studied

Post by Guest on Sat Mar 18, 2017 10:56 am

A South American tribe with a highly active lifestyle has the healthiest arteries of any population yet studied, say researchers. The Tsimane people, who live in the Bolivian Amazon, spend most of every day hunting, fishing, farming and gathering wild fruits and nuts, and follow a carbohydrate-based diet containing little protein and fat.
Scientists who examined hundreds of men and women from the group found that almost nine out of 10 had clear arteries showing no risk of heart disease.

Even in old age most remained in astonishingly good health.

Wow amazing. Mind you that's because their not polluted by modern day car fumes, air fumes, medicines and modern day living.

I hope these people are left alone, and allowed to continue their lives with no busy bodies wanting to reform them.

We can learn a lot from so called less civilised people.
I doubt unless we grew ourselves everything we ate we could evert recapture the healthy eating ways of old...people eat too much and food is packed with unhealthy sugars, salts and additives....plus modern day man is lazy and greedy.

Indeed Syl and I find it very interesting how such indigenous people live their lives

We could learn a lot Thor....but we wont, I think we are far too 'advanced' in our ways to ever be so healthy.

I remember years ago reading of a small community in Italy who were renown for having very elderly healthy people living amongst them.
They ate the med diet, fresh food, lots of good olive oil, fruit, veg, all the good things....and they all drank local wine every day, quite a lot of it, but always with food.

I found that quite comforting. Razz

Yeah, I posted up an article on that Village before on here. They are doing tests on the residents that have many people over the age of a 100

That sounds like the people I read about Thor...it was a few years ago, I bet this was an updated article of how they are faring...thanks for posting that.

I love the med diet....and the wine and coffee and the relaxation of it all, its how I try to live my own life, unfortunately we don't get the sun (which I am convinced helps with a healthy lifestyle) but we have to manage with what we have got. x

They clearly have a very healthy diet that they live on and I am sure that one of the tests did prove that the diet, has great health benefits

Typical Murdoch press reporters, to fuck up and misrepresent the findings from that study...

That Telegraph story refers to the diet as "high carbohydrare, low protein and low fat.." --  when in actual fact, in comparison to typical Western diets it should be called  high carbohydrate, moderate/medium levels of protein, and low levels of fat.

The fat intake is certainly low by Western standards (where many people in modern 'advanced' countries can get up to 30-->40% of their calories from fats and oils, especially for those with large 'junk food' consumption..).  In addition, less than 30% of the fat intake of this Bolivian tribe is in "saturated fats" (11 gms out of the 38 gms avg.).

Magica and Syl each covered 1/3 of the main points in this tribes lifestyle, with their comments --with the high level of physical activity (on average, it equates to "17,000 steps a day"..) being the third major part of that equation...

Indeed, these three factors :

* A diet high in plant fibres (fruit, veges, root vege's and tubers, nuts and lentils..), moderate protein (including fish and lean meats, as well as legumes and nuts);
Largely avoiding the "big three" killers in over-processed and junk foods (white sugar, white flour, saturated fats
== a.k.a. "white and deadly"..);

* Avoiding much of the pollutants, contaminants and stresses of the modern world;

* Along with plenty of physical activity;
(And, largely avoiding tobacco, and minimising/reducing alcohol and caffeine intake..).

--  are pretty much along the same lines as I've been preaching over the years...         sunny

Interesting that the T'simané live in the lowlands, where  the average elevation is 600-1,000'.  Normally, hearts in xlnt condition are associated with La Paz (13,000') and inner parts of Peru (14,000').

And me. I often think of the T'simané who live in the lowlands, where  the average elevation is 600-1,000.

Maybe I had better move from the Home Counties to the Bolivian Amazon....I've been diagnosed as having aortic stenosis.

Just go in and ask for a stent. It can be done arthroscopically. Then get on BRILINTA® (ticagrelor) and 81 mgs. of aspirin/day. Obviously, see your cardiologist first.

Apparently a stent isn't an option as it is not a narrowing problem; the entire aortic valve will need to be replaced either by an animal based one, which itself could eventually need replacing, or a mechanical one which would outlast me. I'm told, however, that these click rhythmically - much to the annoyance of a bed buddy!

What good does this kind of study do though? There are many variables which probably aren't conclusive. Most people mention diet, but then there are all kinds of opinions about fat versus carbohydrates. It could be to do with levels of exercise, lack of pollution, genetics, lack of obesity generally, lack of smoking, lack of stress, or other factors. It could even be coincidence.

Even if it was identified what was protecting them, what are people in this country or the US going to do about it? It's a bit late for us all to become hunter-gatherers. Razz

People already know they shouldn't get fat, they shouldn't smoke, and they should do more exercise - they don't need a study like this to tell them that.

The issue about inflammatory markers was interesting because that's often thought to be a result of diet, and inflammation is held responsible for many conditions.

Bummer...as they say in So. California surfing circles.

AS (aortic stenosis) can be caused by build up of calcium, which damages the valve and restricts the amount of blood flowing through the valve, or it can be congenital. Good luck.

I think any knowledge about an organ is helpful, and increases the interactive and systemic understanding of the body.  It may not be helpful today to know why these people (T'simané) have such longevity, but lo and behold, some technology or medication comes along by which we can simulate the condition, and voilà...is an advancement.  That's how penicillin happened.
