Gay only hotels and resorts.

Post by Syl on Sat Jan 28, 2017 7:11 pm

I have just been searching for a holiday online and come across (for the first time) hotels stipulating gay only.

Are they legal? Would it be OK to advertise 'straight only' hotels?

I remember a few years ago the Christian owners of a b&b hotel were found guilty of discrimination when they refused a gay couple accommodation.
Their argument was they would refuse any unmarried couple a double room. (This was before gay marriage was legalised) they still lost in court though.

There are so many hotels around I dint have a problem with a gay-only hotel.
I'm not really sure why gays would want to stay in a gay-only hotel though? It's not like they live any differently!

Oh you mean sex? I am thinking that like most ordinary people, they will shut their bedroom doors and do it away from the pubic.
So what else is different?

That's my view on this too - they go on holiday like anyone else so can't see the point .

There was definitely a reason for gay only hotels in the past, when being openly gay was seriously a risk and a person would want to feel safe.

But now there is no need. Gay people can and should be able to stay anywhere they like, and retaining some gay only hotels does leave us open to being called out for double standards.

I didn't know any strictly gay only hotels existed though tbh.

I didn't keep the name of the hotel Thor...it was a 4 star in Maspalona, Gran Canaria. It came up on a list when I was browsing for holidays. It distinctly said ..gay only...I have never seen that before, just wondered if others had, and would it be legal.

It wouldn't bother me, each to their own, but I don't really see the point of wanting to be segregated.

Yes in the past I can see maybe there would have been a point, I imagine they would have had to be secret though, not openly advertised as this was.

In Manchester we have the gay village....it's lively , friendly and mostly peaceful.
As far as I am aware all the clubs and pubs welcome straights in too.

the idea of 'gay' stickily speaking is outdated in itself.
There is a rainbow of sexuality (hence the rainbow flag)

Does this hotel not allow trans, bi or other orientations that are still same sex attracted?
where does the line of 'gay' start and begin?

I used to go quite a lot...nowadays it's all a bit too noisy for me. If we go to town we generally just go out for a meal then a taxi home.

I think they're legal if they're a "private club".

I can't tell if someone is gay - if they announce then yeah but why would they if they just want to live life , no need in making themselves out to be anything special is there ?

Perhaps the need is there for those recently 'out' who are a bit shy...?
I don't see the point or the need for them (apart from the reason I just suggested) but by the same token I don't care if they exist either.

They would, Syl, but I think it would come down to the cause for their existence.

Most understand that a gay only hotel might exist due to the feeling of needing a safe place given the existence of homophobia (though again, in the UK at least, there isn't much need of this now).

What reason would there be for having a straight only hotel? What reason would there be to exclude gay people?

No reason Eilzel, just as I personally see no reason to segregate anyone from hotels.

Even the 'adults only' hotels seem a bit discriminatory to me, but they thrive.
