New study rewrites two decades of research and author says we are 'beyond point of no return'

Global warming is beyond the “point of no return”, according to the lead scientist behind a ground-breaking climate change study.
The full impact of climate change has been underestimated because scientists haven't taken into account a major source of carbon in the environment.
Dr Thomas Crowther’s report has concluded that carbon emitted from soil was speeding up global warming.
The findings, which say temperatures will increase by 1C by 2050, are already being adopted by the United Nations.

Dr Thomas Crowther explaining the study NIOO KNAW
Dr Crowther, speaking to The Independent, branded Donald Trump’s sceptical stance on climate change as “catastrophic for humanity”.
“It’s fair to say we have passed the point of no return on global warming and we can’t reverse the effects, but certainly we can dampen them,” said the biodiversity expert.
“Climate change may be considerably more rapid than we thought it was.”

The report, by an exhaustive list of researchers and published in the Nature journal, assembled data from 49 field experiments over the last 20 years in North America, Europe and Asia.
It found that the majority of the Earth’s terrestrial store of carbon was in soil, and that as the atmosphere warms up, increasing amounts are emitted in what is a vicious cycle of “positive feedbacks”.
The study found that 55bn tonnes in carbon, not previously accounted for by scientists, will be emitted into the atmosphere by 2050.
“As the climate warms, those organisms become more active and the more active they become, the more the soil respires – exactly the same as human beings," said Dr Crowther, who headed up the study at Yale Climate & Energy Institute, but is now a Marie Curie fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology.
“Our study shows that this major feedback has already certainly started, and it will have a significant impact on the climate in the coming decades. This information will be critical as we strive to understand how the climate is going to change in the future. And it will also be critical if we are to generate meaningful strategies to fight against it.”
Dr Crowther, a 30-year-old Cardiff University Phd graduate originally from North Wales, predicts climate change will lead to widespread migrations and antagonism among communities.
FindTheData | Graphiq   (interactive graph on link)
“These effects of climate change will certainly be felt disproportionately by poorer people, particularly the billions of people whose livelihoods are intrinsically linked to the land,” he added.
“But the impacts on sea-level rise, ocean currents and the health of natural ecosystems are equally devastating for a vast multitude of reasons.”
During his presidential campaign, Mr Trump described climate change as a “total hoax” and said it was a concept created by the Chinese to manipulate US markets.

The billionaire tycoon also tweeted in 2014: “It’s late in July and it is really cold outside in New York. Where the hell is GLOBAL WARMING???”
White House chief of staff Reince Preibus has since said the 70-year-old will “have an open mind” but Mr Trump’s threat to pull out of the 2015 Paris climate deal still lingers.
The increasingly popular right-wing Breitbart News website's reporting has repeatedly poured scorn on climate change theories.

“I think this is catastrophic for humanity,” said Dr Crowther.
“Uncertainty is nothing like a reason enough to suggest climate change isn’t happening. There’s a nice analogy; if you step in front of an oncoming bus, no doctor in the world can tell you how damaging the impact is going to be.
“But we do know the damage is going to be huge. This alone should be enough information to persuade us to avoid the bus.”

The last two decades of the 20th century were the hottest in 400 years.
He added: “Sceptics often say that scientists are just saying that climate change is real so that they can keep their jobs.
“I would just like to stress that I could get a hell of a lot more money than academia offers me if I were to do a study that suggests that climate change is not real."

Prof Ivan Janssens, seen as one of the godfathers in the global change ecology field, said the research had provided essential data to the climate change model.
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), established by the UN and World Meteorological Organisation, is incorporating the study's data.

“This study is very important, because the response of soil carbon stocks to the ongoing warming, is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in our climate models,” said Prof Janssens, of the University of Antwerp.
“I’m an optimist and still believe that it is not too late, but we urgently need to develop a global economy driven by sustainable energy sources and start using CO2, as a substrate, instead of a waste product.
“If this happens by 2050, then we can avoid warming above 2C. If not, we will reach a point of no return and will probably exceed 5C.”

Can you show us the evidence for this claim of temperature up to 400 years ago...?

And show us what temperatures are also claimed by the source, for the temperatures for over 400 years ago... ?

Crying or Very sad

I'VE PRETTY WELL given up posting on sites like this about topics the likes of Climate Change accelerated by mankind's activities,, industrial pollution, excessive land clearing, bad mining and oil_drilling practices, accountant-run agribusiness, pesticide bee kills, privitisation of water resources, and their combined negative effects on our environment...

When each and every thread is attacked, rubbished, deflected, derailed and spammed by servile dumbfuck, unpaid and uneducated lying trolling bastards like Tommy, Private Piles, and their floppette corporate-dick-sucking comrades..

Where the whole pathetic and slimy bunch of them won't be satisfied until they have screwed over the living environment, local communities and the rest of humanity, and left this planet in far worse shape then they found it  !

In other news ...

Climate change will stir 'unimaginable' refugee crisis, says military

Climate change is set to cause a refugee crisis of “unimaginable scale”, according to senior military figures, who warn that global warming is the greatest security threat of the 21st century and that mass migration will become the “new normal”.

The generals said the impacts of climate change were already factors in the conflicts driving a current crisis of migration into Europe, having been linked to the Arab Spring, the war in Syria and the Boko Haram terrorist insurgency.

Military leaders have long warned that global warming could multiply and accelerate security threats around the world by provoking conflicts and migration. They are now warning that immediate action is required.

“Climate change is the greatest security threat of the 21st century,” said Maj Gen Munir Muniruzzaman, chairman of the Global Military Advisory Council on climate change and a former military adviser to the president of Bangladesh. He said one metre of sea level rise will flood 20% of his nation. “We’re going to see refugee problems on an unimaginable scale, potentially above 30 million people.”

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/dec/01/climate-change-trigger-unimaginable-refugee-crisis-senior-military

I'm sure there are ... those ... who will doubt anything that comes out of a far-left, tree-hugging military general's mouth Smile ...

But the idea of people who hate refugees and deny climate change having their countries overrun with climate change refugees gives me a certain Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Idea          The World's military has long been well aware of the consequences of man-assisted climate change...

The Pentagon has openly had an active climate change/global warming secretariat in operation for over a decade;
The USA, Canada, Russia, Norway, Sweden, Greenland have all had increased military activity, developments and exercises around Arctic regions during that same period;
Meanwhile Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and India have seen regular naval patrols extending into the Southern Ocean.

And plans are being developed to rehouse displaced Pacific Islanders onto islands off northern NZ, and into parts of central and northern Queensland, as their native homelands are swallowed up over coming decades..          Climate change escalating so fast it is 'beyond point of no return' 3974176704

Despite all of that denialist crap from Koch bros./big oil/coal-mining-funded lobbyists like Christopher Monckton, and their unpaid and unthinking, willing_lackey mouthpieces like Tommy Monk -- and our supplicant and arse-licking industry-owned chain-dragging guvm'nts --  much of the world is well aware of what is coming...

AND largely powerless to do much about it,  in the face of all their combined, mindless, greed-inspired and self-destructive stupidity..         bom

Scientists demonstrate more fallacies of ‘manmade global warming’

earth cloud spaceIt seems that every few weeks we hear or see some scientific data that seriously challenges the politically correct notion that the activities of man, burning fossil fuels for energy, are irreversibly and catastrophically damaging the Earth’s atmosphere and causing global temperatures to rise to dangerous levels.

There are two competing ideas about the last two decades of global temperatures: One says temperatures have plateaued for the last 18 years, but the other that says the rising temperature trend has continued through that period.

According to a CNS News story Dr. John Christy, professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center (ESSC) at the University of Alabama/Huntsville, argues that there has been no global warming for at least the last 18 years, and bases that position on actual raw temperature data he and fellow University of Alabama/Huntsville professor and NASA scientist Dr. Roy Spencer collected from 14 instruments aboard various weather satellites.

However, in a story in The Washington Post, a group of scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) say that based upon their analysis of new surface temperature data and corrections to old data that NOAA knew were imperfect, there has been no break in global warming.

Some questions arise from these diametrically opposed opinions.

• Which of the two methods of measuring global temperature — surface temperatures, used by the NOAA team, or satellite observations, used by Drs. Christy and Spencer — is the most accurate? Or is some combination of the two, or some other method, more accurate?

• If trained scientists do not, can not or will not agree on what the truth is about whether temperatures are rising or not, how can the rest of us understand climate changes?

• Since the outcome of its analysis confirmed NOAA’s previously held idea about global temperatures increasing, and in light of previous manipulation of data by some well-known scientists, should we be concerned about NOAA “correcting” data it “knew were imperfect?”

Just last month The Daily Caller reported on a paper stating that the global temperature change observed over the last hundred years or so is well within the natural variability of the last 8,000 years.

What this means is that even if the global temperature has risen as the global warming faction says, it shouldn’t be a cause for concern, since global temperatures have been in the current range before, and long before man started doing the things the global warming gang thinks are responsible for the increase.

The paper was written by Dr. Philip Lloyd, a South Africa-based physicist and climate researcher, who examined ice core-based temperature data going back eight millennia. Dr. Lloyd is a former lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC), the body that is perhaps the most honored authority for climate opinion, and an organization that supports manmade global warming.

The work of Dr. Lloyd, Dr. Christy and Dr. Spencer is out of the mainstream of climate opinion, a mainstream that is shrinking, as more of its members question the “settled science” of rising global temperatures due to the burning of fossil fuels, and recognize the failure of dozens of flawed climate models that predict warming that many scientists argue hasn’t occurred. More and more, this line of thinking appears more political than scientific.

HT, that site is so biased!

"data that seriously challenges the politically correct notion", "the global warming gang" - not how real journalists write -- snarl terms have no place in objective journalism

"Just last month The Daily Caller reported" - right-wing source relies on another right-wing source

"Dr. Philip Lloyd" - prominent global warming denialist whose job with the IPCC is not what the article claims (he wasn't researching climate change, but the potential for capturing and storing carbon): https://www.linkedin.com/in/philip-lloyd-02843121

Idea

That dubious blogsite that Horatio posted from is clearly an energy/mining corporate propaganda machine, poorly masquerading as some kind of "news" source ...

Misrepresenting the science.
Posting outright lies.

Falsely claiming company lobbyists as being dissident "scientists", when they're not even qualified or experienced in the relevent field..

That whole fairytale is a farce,  from beginning to end --  exactly the kind of denialist "spam" that I was complaining about earlier.         Climate change escalating so fast it is 'beyond point of no return' 3755771736

Question

Where did you read that, though, nicko  ???
Just because something is in print, doesn't make it factual..

Unfortunately, the genuine satellite photo's actually show that the summer melt over the Arctic has increased by more than 20% over that same period.

The oil&mining financed denialist industry is well known for false presentations, shonky pseudo-'science' claims, and outright fabrications. And bullying and deriding genuine scientists..     sleaze
