Black Nurses: The Women Who Saved The NHS

Post by Irn Bru on Tue Nov 22, 2016 11:52 am

This documentary reveals the untold story of how thousands of Caribbean women answered the call from 'the Mother Country' to come and help build Britain’s National Health Service.

It is a story of ambition, survival, integration and ultimately, triumph told for the first time by the women themselves and never seen before archive.

The film explores the price paid by these pioneering women - many of whom were just teenagers at the time - for leaving their families, friends and culture behind as they sought a new life in the UK.

And it examines what post-war Britain made of these 'foreigners', their impact on British society and cultural legacy both here and abroad.

An excellent opportunity the remind ourselves of the conribution these young women made to this country in the way the answered the call and in doing so tried to make a better life for themselves.

And of course they followed on fron the young men who also came to our shores from the Caribbean and beyond to fight to defend Great Britain from the Nazi's and there fascist regime.

Being broadcast this Thursday on BBC 4 so it's a must watch.

Sweet! It seems that the prevailing political voices of the present are extremely ignorant.

That's been changed.

You need to be covered by a TV Licence if you:
watch or record any live TV online
download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand
