Good God Allmight I just want to burn this to the ground

I ... just fuck it, I'm logging off. This place has really pissed me off today. I cannot believe some of these people can chew their own food.

Settle down, Ben.  We will work it out.  Let's try to be calm.

A hissy-fit isn't what is called for.  Work responsibly. We can make it work.

Yeah, I'm sorry about this, and about being so snappish to several people. No excuses, but as for an explanation, there was a glitch in getting my insomnia meds refilled and I had a pretty bad case of rebound insomnia over the weekend without them.

Good morning Ben.

I sometimes suffer with a lack of sleep also.

When I'm at work,I sleep very well but when I'm on leave, especially the first two or three days at home I have big problems trying to sleep.Or if I wake up at 3am for example,it's a rarity to fall back to sleep,so I get up.

I offer this suggestion with all sincerety & understanding, the suggestion being a fairly hard physical workout starting at about 1pm.The said workout lasts for about 45 minutes & is fairly vigorous.Following that I eat & even though I feel like an afternoon nap,I fight it & stay awake until 10pm ish, when I go to bed.

Following that regime,I usually sleep for a good 6-8 hours.I never touch sleeping pills or any other sleeping aid.

Good luck.

I'd love to sleep without meds but I'm starting to think that's just impossible. I do try to get in a good workout, but sometimes I miss it because of the nature of my job -- I have to cover evening events at times. I do find that I'm in a much better mood when I'm working out regularly.

I've even gone so far as black-out curtains and blocking the cracks of my bedroom door -- it's pitch-black in there. And it's not even that I'm laying awake worrying about shit -- I usually just lay there bored unless I've got my medicine in me ...

At what time of the day do you workout?....Evenings? I ask because when I was younger I worked out in the evening,7ish & I couldn't sleep.Which lead me to experiment a bit with workout times & I find it best for me to train starting at about 1pm.

What sort of workouts are you doing?

Yeah, I have heard you shouldn't do that; I'm considering trying in the afternoon. I do isometrics (can't lift weights because of an esophagus problem) and run on a treadmill. Nothing too athletic, but my last workout was 5 mins walking, 25 mins running and 5 mins walking again at the end. The isometrics stuff is just what I can fit into breaks, it's not nearly as formalized.

Wanted to share a tip with you that has helped me quite a bit -- have you heard of vagus breathing? It's really simple, you just inhale somewhat quickly (though not a gasp) and exhale more slowly. It sounds too simple to work, but if you do it for a while, you can feel the relaxing effect; it's also useful in dealing with heart palpitations, anxiety, etc. It apparently works by engaging your sympathetic nervous system while turning down the dial on your fight-or-flight response.

Anyway, thanks for listening Smile

Worst thing you can do - total darkness, no sound - just lets your mind concentrate on stuff and worries and you can never sleep. Better to play music in the background and better still read a book. You always end up falling asleep then.

I didn't explain that right -- I have a fan going for background noise, and I read a book every night in bed. It just seems that's not enough to get me to eventually drift off, even if I'm dealing with a whopper of a sleep deficit.

A book does it for me every time - I just can not read a book in bed - I last a couple of pages at the most.

Ever tried meditation? Been doing it for over 40 years, and would not have got through the last 3 years without it. I didn't sleep for more than a couple of hours a night for months until I went back to it. I'm still not a good sleeper, but I don't stress about it any more and if I can't sleep I meditate, which relaxes you almost as much. Sound to me like vagus breathing is quite like the first stage of meditation.

I've tried meditation, but I can't seem to stick with it -- my mind just starts wandering ...

Andy, what kind of books do you read? I'm sure if I wasn't really into a lot of the books I read it would probably help, but I tend to get page-turners Smile

That's the trick though - persevere in reading ones that aren't very interesting. Barbara Cartland should do it!  Laughing

Loved the quotes, Ben. My wife's late father was city editor for our former conservative newspaper. She will like those quotes since she's from a newspaper family.

This guy's a true gentleman, he was a sectional publisher who always came to work in a suit and was just a great people-person. He had a really cool job, with involvement in the operations of the paper both as a news organization and a business. I actually was shooting to become a sectional publisher, but the industry's shrunk so much in the past six years that we no longer even have those positions.

And it's not even that I'm laying awake worrying about shit -- I usually just lay there bored unless I've got my medicine in me ...
per chance do you suffer from RLS (restless legs syndrome) especially when you lie down and try to sleep ?.... With the odd stabbing pain in your feet

No, nothing really like that, thankfully. I do have a thing where when I'm drifting off, my leg will twitch involuntarily, but it's not a constant thing and I think it's pretty normal.

I also, however, occasionally get this very weird symptom when I'm falling asleep:

Exploding head syndrome is a form of hypnagogic auditory hallucination and is a rare and relatively undocumented parasomnia event in which the subject experiences a loud bang in their head similar to a bomb exploding, a gun going off, a clash of cymbals, ringing, an earthquake, or any other form of loud, indecipherable noise that seems to originate from inside the head.

This noise usually happens at the onset of sleep or within an hour or two of falling asleep, but is not necessarily the result of a dream.

Sometimes at home I dream that I've heard either the back or front door handles being tried which causes me to investigate whilst in possession of a nice big stick.

Eveytime I know nothing suss has happend but I have to investigate & what makes it so annoying is that when I get back into bed,she who must be obeyed kicks me on the legs......This has been happening for years.

Well, I miss the relaxation. But my pajamas don't get chilled anymore.

Sorry to learn about your esophagus condition & I'm guessing that your workout regime isn't enough to tire you out. However,if that's what you are able to do because of your esophagus condition then so be it & good luck to you.

I don't think that I've heard of vagus breathing but I do something similar.....Ben are you able to close your body down? I mean are you able to remain motionless for long periods of time whilst keeping mentally alert?

I had to practice the procedure for many months before I became proficient at it & in doing so I can regulate my breathing very well. There is a fancy name for what I do but I don't think it's the vagus breathing.

Thanks, it's probably a combination of my hereditary heartburn and my insistence upon eating spicy foods Smile

I have to be able to keep pretty still and stay alert because of my job; sometimes I think my ability to stay alert is too strong. I put it like this -- 99.999 percent of the time, I can force myself to stay awake. I've had times where I only slept a few hours over a period of three to four days.

I get that and its horrible. I have even been all round the house before now convinced a window has been smashed.
I was told it was stress related.

I have a data protection policy guidelines report I can lend you, it will work Im sure!  Sleep

Errrrm... sounds like you may be addicted.

Ben your mind has forgotten your triggers to send you to sleep. You're going to fuck up your liver if you continue on meds.
Medication also doesn't allow you to have a 'proper' natural sleep either, so you're not waking up refreshed.

I recommend learning meditation and self hypnosis. It makes one hell of a difference.

Self-hypnosis is great for sleep.
