Everytime we are away famous people seem to die in their droves.
Hilda Ogden(Jean Alexander) lovely Bobby Vee (my teen heartthrob) and Pete Burns all passed away.
Last time we were abroad David Bowie and Alan Rickman died...it's horrible to pick up a paper abroad and see someone famous is dead.

Maybe we should stop going away. Shocked

The US took advantage of the deep water harbor to harbor it's fleet, after it defeated the pirates, keeping a base there until 1840,

I didn't know you had lived in the Balearics Quill.....so you will be familiar with the group of islands.
I didn't know Mahon had been the first site of the USA navy, we live and learn.

The islands all have their own charm, Majorca can be more hectic that Minorca, but there are quiet places to visit too. We get an open top and just drive...usually get lost, come across some tiny hillside villages, and stop at some out of the way little tavernas that are hidden away.

By the way, I thought of you when we flew out. We were unlucky to be booked on a Thomas Cook flight....which must have the smallest leg room of any commercial airline.
Remember when you said to sit 5 rows behind someone you would be able to hear what people were saying on the 5th row in front?
I can confidently tell you that it's impossible to hear what the people are saying ONE row in front, unless they stand in for the local town crier that is.

I didn't live on the islands, but I spent a lot of weekends there.  I lived in Madrid, and moved to Seville during my time in Spain.  Although I was DOS, I had special military orders cut so I could fly on any military flight, get a pool car, etc.  At the time there was a TROPO site on the islands, with daily flights to and from.  Sometimes the hardware was a little rough (Navy aircraft), but they were fun weekends.

I think we were talking about someone standing in the aisle hearing rows away, not seated in the seats.  But it is true that air pressure inside an airplane does make it difficult for sound to carry.

I think we were talking about a woman passenger who was sat 5 rows behind a group of lads who had been singing or joking about bombs....anyway, like I said it's impossible to hear.

I have never been to mainland Spain apart from a teenage holiday in Benidorm....I imagine that's a far cry from Seville.

Spain is an interesting place. So many facets, it was behind Portugal in development, partly because of Henry V (the Navigator) and the split between Castile and Aragon. It's practically two different countries. I love it, and the northern parts as well. Zaragosa is beautiful.
