The World Is Changing Empty The World Is Changing

Post by Jules on Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:06 pm

The Times They Are A Changin'  - as Dylan would say.
We are doing things differently.

A list drawn up by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges  of pointless, useless  procedures runs to 40 items, covering everything from wrist fractures to palliative chemotherapy,  has been released. Eg if you’ve ever washed out a wound with salt water instead of tap water or requested an x-ray for lower-back pain, you’re a fool.

Speaking of which, here is a humorous list of 40 more things people shouldn’t bother doing.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/oct/24/dont-floss-peel-veg-wash-your-jeans-40-things-you-can-stop-doing-right-now

1 Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day
The British government advises five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. In Denmark, it’s six. In Australia, it’s seven. In 2014, campaigners tried upping it to 10.
Just eat some vegetables and be done with it!!

2 Taking vitamin C supplements
If you feel a cold coming on. Study after study has concluded that – unless you live in a frozen wilderness, smoke an incredibly large number of cigarettes or subject yourself to extreme physical stress on a regular basis – vitamin C won’t do anything.

3 Flossing
In August, the British Dental Association’s scientific adviser declared flossing to be pointless, adding that all floss-based studies of the past 25 years have been of “very low quality”.

4 Washing your jeans
The CEO of Levi’s has advised that you should never wash jeans, because washing them makes them look bad.

5 Having a landline
No one will have a landline at all 10 years from now. They exist purely to complicate the act of changing your broadband provider.

6 Drinking eight glasses of water a day
This figure first appeared in  in the US 70 years ago!   Just drink until your wee is no longer dark. That means you’re hydrated.

7-14 Overusing your fridge
Don’t put tomatoes,  potatoes, bread, onions, bananas, avocado,  eggs,  ketchup in the fridge.

15 Washing your hair every day.
Don't.

16 Taking a polling card with you to vote
In Britain, if you’re on the electoral register, you don’t need it.

17 Peeling vegetables
Most of a vegetable’s insoluble fibre is in its peel.

18 Owning more than 10 items of clothing
A Canadian pilot called Matt Souveny  proved that people own too many clothes.

19 Communicating with words
Emoji is now the fastest-growing language in history, thanks to its ability to bypass international barriers.  fiesta

20 Pressing the ‘close door’ button in a lift

21 Ordering anything in the top-right-hand corner of a menu
Psychology. Your eye will naturally fall on the top-right-hand corner of a menu,  so this is where restaurateurs often place their most profitable items.

22 Discarding out-of-date food
Unless it smells terrible or is covered in mould, you’re probably fine.

23 Playing the lottery

24 Taking toothpaste on holiday
stop wasting your luggage allowance on it.  Buy toothpaste at your destination.

25 Napping
Last month, a doctor from the University of Tokyo claimed that regular, hour-long, daytime naps can boost the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 45%.

26 Pressing C on a calculator multiple times

27 Buying antivirus software
Earlier this year, the US Department of Homeland Security’s computer-emergency readiness team issued a warning about a popular brand of antivirus software after finding that it contained “critical vulnerabilities”. Most browsers now have content-verification systems that do the job better.  The World Is Changing 1363015401

28 Stretching before exercise
It’s unlikely to improve performance or minimise injury.

29 Standing in line at the departure gate at the airport.
It won’t take off without you. Calm down.

30-34 Buying expensive products
Why buy air freshener when you can just fill an orange peel with salt? Why use rinse aid in a dishwasher when you can just use white vinegar? Why buy laundry detergent when you can just grate some soap and put it in a jar with washing soda?

35 Filing a tax return
If you owe less than £3,000 in tax, it’s often unnecessary to fill in a self-assessment sheet. Just ring HMRC and settle up over the phone instead.

36 Visiting a travel agent
Use the internet like everyone else!

37 Learning to drive
The driverless car revolution is only a few years away. Till then, bus it.

38 Learning how to tell the time on analog clocks
Let Siri tell you what time it is.

39 Maintaining a CD collection
CDs are expensive and bulky.

40 Reading the news
According to Professor Graham Davey, consuming a non-stop torrent of negative news stories can significantly contribute to the deterioration of your mood, and to the development of depression, anxiety, stress and PTSD.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there anything on the list that surprises you? Spotted any new ideas you would  now embrace?

Good affie nicko!  bounce
And how are you this fine autumnal day? Tickiteeboo? Good. cheers

I reckon you've posted a good reason for visiting forums, rather than avoiding forums. Dickheads are very entertaining, after all.

Cool

THE GUARDIAN, The Independent, the Daily Flail...
I wouldn't be in a hurry to listen to anything that those fascist fuckwits try to sell us..       Idea

As For any London_based bunch of scientific/medical /technical dickwits --  when those arrogant m'f'rs @ the British Museum choose to return the stolen remains to the Indigenous folks of Oz, NZ, and North America, then I might choose to listen to their equally brain-f'ed academic colleagues @ other "esteemed" institutions; (e.g. foresaid Academy of Royal Dickheads..).          Twisted Evil

Sure, follow their recommendations above.
Just don't be expected to be socially acceptable with your new_found ill health and poor grooming and presentation as a result  !!!         tongue

Actually Wolfie, the Guardian is very  liberal and progressive,
Not deserving of being lumped in with the rest.

The list of 40 is a very varied mix -
Some proposals you'd reject out of hand - for reasons of propriety or expediency Wink
Some were things you already knew
Some of it is good ol' fashioned common sense
Some of it is very futuristic

#27 intrigues me somewhat?  What a Face

@ eddie ... yes it's a healthy attitude to question advice instead of blindly following it.
Given that most of it comes from commercial people who have products to  sell to us.
It's also healthy to rethink the logic behind some of our own lifelong habits.
This is what the doctors did and that is what spawned this article.

Case in point, I've never bought into the idea that we need to drink so much water every day. The human is a very highly evolved species and the body does not need to be watered copiously, continuously. It is packed full of adaptive mechansims which make all the necessary adjustments of fluids and electrolytes from minute to minute.  So long as we don't blatantly abuse or neglect our bodies we've nowt to worry about.

You've gotta wash your jeans, first thing.  Never put on clothing right off the rack.  They've probably passed through 20 - 30 hands, any one of which could be infected with something.

Besides, washing jeans is a part of their life cycle.  Not washing them would be like not going through puberty for them.

I have never shampooed twice, it can dry your hair out imo. Modern shampoos are very efficient, once is enough for anyone.

Jules, I don't buy into the water thing either. For a start we are all different sizes, and as an example, I hardly sweat at all (no idea why but even when exercising I only sweat little) and you may sweat more than I and so will need to hydrate sooner and possibly more than I.

It's all a marketing ploy. Water makes a lot of money.

Firstly you shouldn't drink water that's bloody....

Secondly, I don't drink tap water because it tastes like someone's arse, it's horrible. Also added to that, is the fluoride content in water supplies - it's too high.
Yet now, I do wonder just how great bottled water actually is....?

Seriously...the water here tastes great, I haven't tasted anyones arse lately so I cant compare....but I'm sure the local water is better.

I resent buying water....and I certainly resent paying over three quid for a small bottle.

Well it's £2 for twelve bottles of Tesco bottled water so it's not bank-breaking. I don't know if it's better but it sure tastes better. I live in a hard water area and believe me, it's nasty.

With a few of these items I'd add an asterisk and a disclaimer that in case of widespread societal breakdown, you might want to own extra clothing, be able to read an analog clock, etc. Smile

Also, antivirus software is still indispensable if you download files and software. But you don't have to pay for it, there are plenty of good free options.
