May does things her own way

The multiple red carpets have been rolled up and put away.

And at the end of the prime minister's first major summit there are questions that will follow her home. No more so than on how she really proposes to control immigration from the European Union. Having ruled out the points-based system that was promised by the winning side in the referendum, her answer on what might come instead? Simply, wait and see.

Downing Street officials are acutely aware they may come under increasing pressure to give more details. They face calls for clarity from allies too, as country after country expressed economic concerns about our planned departure.

But while it comes with political risk, at this summit the prime minister is displaying perhaps a significant contrast to her predecessor - choosing to work up the detail first, then make the decision, rather than make a decision and then make the details fit.

In the case of Hinkley Point, to the fury of the Chinese, a decision that was made before her tenure may even be unpicked.

In the last 36 hours, in the airless bubble of this enormous summit, Theresa May has not had an easy series of meetings. But she has shown that she wants to be a leader who will do things in her own way and in her own time, not beholden to the promises of the referendum, or those in charge before.

Time will tell what sort of a leader she will be, but when everyone else was running away from their posts....including the ones who had fought and won the BREXIT vote, she took the challenge even though she was against leaving the EU.

I'm watching with interest. I will admit I haven't ever liked many conservatives MP's - apart from my local one, she's a fabulously hard worker and she does get things done.

Not sure what she is like Eddie, I have not followed her with any interest till now and I have never voted Conservative in my life.
It's a sad state of affairs when there is no realistic Labour politicians to challenge her views....though at the moment I think she deserves all party support to help the country through the unknown...(because that's how it's turned out).

There was an interesting session In parliament this afternoon about brexit with David Davis taking questions...

He said a points based system might be to open and letting too many in... he said the system they will be bringing in will be more restrictive of numbers.

The points based system is out....wonder how, what, or if anything else is on the cards.
Pity all this wasn't discussed properly BEFORE the vote.

Any system of increased control is better than the current one.

It's a pity that mass 3rd world immigration and open door to eu was imposed on the British people in the first place without any consent of the british people...!!!

We needed immigration, both from Europe and beyond....but the numbers flooding in every year are crippling the UK now, free movement hasn't worked for us and we also have so many people from outside the EU here illegally we have lost control over who should be here and who shouldn't.

The free movement was a bad idea from the start....how can it work when EU countries are so unbalanced in what they have to give and what they have to offer?

What do you mean exactly when you say 'we needed immigration from Europe and beyond'...?

When/which time periods?
Why/what for?
Which types of people with which skills?
In what numbers?
What has country of origin got to do with it?

I'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with your opening statement... just asking if you could elaborate a little and give some detailed reasoning to such a broad claim...?

Thanks.

Well take the NHS for example Tommy. We needed people to staff it in the  beginning.
Even before the NHS existed we recruited health workers from oversees....we needed African nurses and Indian Dr's in the 50's and 60's....once the NHS service started in the late 40's we needed many more foreign health workers ,nurses, carers, cleaners.
Unfortunately more recently we stopped training our own nurses and relied too heavily on importing people, but the fact is now the NHS would crumble without them.

In more mundane jobs people from the EU have flocked here to do many of the jobs SOME Brits wont tolerate.
Catering for one....the area I live in has mostly foreign workers working in cafe's and restaurants......if you need a cab don't expect to get a British driver, if you need a pint of milk locally after 6pm dont think any shops run by Brits will be open, they are like hens teeth, impossible to find..

Bus drivers??.....reports were they HAD to advertise abroad in Manchester to fill 100's of vacancies.

I know some unscrupulous employers advertise abroad instead of here, especially in the building and catering trade, but the fact remains that we have needed people to work here in the past, and they have done us a great service by providing that work.
We will always need skilled people from abroad, the points system would have provided that....not sure what system we will adopt in the future.

Well that makes sense on the surface, but what about people who are working here and planning to bring their wives or husbands and children over?

What about the firms that only advertise abroad and deprive local people of applying for vacancies?

The problem with this country is the soft and generous benefits system and low minimum wage. There's too many who'd rather draw dole than work. And to be honest, who can blame them when £7 an hour won't pay the bills.

WHAT ABOUT 'family reunions' once their main breadwinner has that sponsored job ?

Or, are they planning on re-introducing child labour..

I dont know why anyone should whinge about the idea that immigrants should only be allowed in if they have a job to come to???

after all that mainly how things worked BEFORE that evil empire the EU got too big for its boots.

why should we take every unemployed from europe...we are NOT the "dole office" of europe...

and it should apply twice over for non EU migrants , becasue we are most CERTAINLY NOT the dole office of the world

Just like australia....

they should have to show that they are capable of being independant of the state system for 5 years..

either in savings OR a suitably well paid job to come to.....

There is already a system in place whereby a person has to be earning over a certain level before they can be allowed to bring their spouse in... (only non eu at moment but will apply to them too after we leave eu)

But what good would it be for our country if we allowed someone to come in to do a job where they only paid a couple of thousand pounds into the system in taxes but then we're allowed to bring their wife and kids over here and then start claiming tax credits znd child benefits etc and each child's school place costing  £6000 a year to taxpayer...!!!???

That would be madness wouldn't it...!?

But this is currently what is going on here under eu rules!!!

Under present EU rules a parent living and working here is entitled to claim child benefits for children left at home even though they have not and probably wont ever set foot on British soil.

As far as I know if a person from the EU is living and working here and paying National Insurance, or are claiming certain benefits, they are entitled to claim child benefit for children not living here.
