uhm....that depends does it not....on whether or not your enemy was genuinely "running away or merely heading away from you to better cover from whence to return fire....

If it was clearly a "rout" and or retreat then I beleive it is wrong to shoot them in the back....

If its the other option then by all means ....the fewer (enemy) the better

I believe SOP is to demand surrender, if he does not he's fair game.

The best option is to shoot him in the legs. A wounded foe requires more manpower to deal with.

I sgree with Handy, as nasty as it seems if the enemy is killed thats it!

If he's wounded, men have to be taken of the battle field to pick him up,he has to be taken to hospital, [more man power needed] and then treated for his wounds witch costs money.

It's quite hard to shoot the legs though, that's the problem. Especially fleeing legs.

I don't believe in 'take no prisoners' but if someone is running away to fight another day then I'm afraid it's 'yer teas oot mate' ........Bang

I sometimes research why so many civilians are killed by the cops.

I get the explanation from sites like this
https://www.pfoa.co.uk/110/shooting-to-wound
https://www.policeone.com/use-of-force/articles/3468112-Shooting-center-mass-Shooting-to-kill-or-to-stop/

Why didn't they just shoot him in the leg?
Shooting to kill or to stop?

The gist is "Always aim for the centre mass. Never the limbs, which are much harder to hit."

But this is in a civilian situation and this thread is about a battlefield  context, so thanks for the correction, Nicko.
