Soldier dies on training exercise in Brecon Beacons, MoD says

Soldier with Rifles regiment died during training exercise in south Wales on hottest day of the year

A soldier has died while training on the hottest day of the year close to where three men suffered fatal heat illness during an SAS selection exercise in 2013.
The Ministry of Defence said that an infantry soldier from the Rifles regiment died on Tuesday while on an exercise near Brecon.
Temperatures on Tuesday peaked at just above 30C in Brecon, the Met Office said.
An army spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a soldier from Infantry training centre Catterick died on 19 July while conducting pre-course training for the platoon sergeants’ battle course in Brecon.”
Civilian paramedics were called to the infantry battle school in Brecon early on Tuesday morning before temperatures soared to their peak.
A spokesman for the Welsh ambulance service said: “We were called shortly before 9am to a medical emergency at the infantry training centre in Brecon. A Wales air ambulance and two emergency ambulances attended the scene but the air ambulance wasn’t used.”
It is understood that the man who died was an instructor at Catterick barracks in north Yorkshire and was due to be married later this year.
The Health and Safety Executive said it had been informed about the incident at Dering Lines in Brecon – where the battle school is based.
Defence minister Harriett Baldwin told the House of Commons defence committee that she wanted to express her sorrow at the “very sad death” and to “make the commitment that the Ministry of Defence will, of course, be undertaking a full investigation and will share that with the committee”.
It appears that the soldier did not collapse on a remote hillside as the SAS recruits did. The MoD refused to comment on reports that marches on the Brecon Beacons were cancelled on Tuesday because of the high temperatures that were forecast.
Family members of the SAS recruits who died in 2013 have expressed shock at the latest death but are declining to comment until more details are confirmed.

I do hope it wasn't because he didn't have enough water!

Making them do this training in that kind of heat is just madness. They need to stop it.

Surely they have to train in heat as they never know where they'll be stationed?

He must've had an underlying condition. Surely no one dies that suddenly and quickly without feeling ill enough to say so?

They do - frequently, very fit people as well.   Don't you remember the three exceptionally fit SAS soldiers who died three years ago in the same place?

Yes I do and yes I read the reference in the article.
What a senseless death of a young man.

If they die in action that's one thing. To die in training is fucking lunacy. If I were the family, I'd sue their arse.
