Orlando police: 'Approximately 20 dead' after club rampage
Carolyn McAtee Cerbin, Steph Solis and John Bacon,
USA TODAY 8:36 a.m. EDT June 12, 2016
A shooting rampage at an Orlando nightclub early Sunday left "approximately 20" people dead, including the gunman, and was being investigated as terrorism, authorities said.
Police Chief John Mina said the tragedy began at 2:02 a.m., when three police officers engaged in a gun battle with a suspect outside Pulse, a gay club just south of downtown. A hostage situation then took place inside, and a SWAT team was called in, Mina said. Police received updates from patrons trapped in the club, and decided to storm the club at about 5 a.m.
"Our biggest concern was further loss of life," Mina said. "We exchanged gunfire with the suspect, and he was dead at the scene."
Mina said 42 people were transferred to local hospitals, and one officer was wounded. He estimated the death toll at 20, and said at least 30 people were rescued.
"Tonight our community witnessed a horrific crime... that will have a lasting effect on our community," a solemn Mayor Buddy Dyer said.
FBI Special Agent Ronald Hopper said the case was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism, either domestic or international. It was not clear if the shooter acted alone, he said. He said they were trying to determine if there was a connection with radical Islam.
"We do have suggestions that the individual may have leanings toward that particular ideology," Hopper said.
Mina said the gunman was armed with an assault rifle, a handgun and some sort of unidentified device. Officers from multiple agencies and dozens of emergency vehicles responded to the scene. Orange County Fire and Rescue called for gurneys to move victims from the club.
"We can confirm this is a mass casualty situation. Support from local/state/federal agencies," Orlando police tweeted about four hours after events began to unfold. Then, a short time later: "Pulse Shooting: The shooter inside the club is dead."
Mina said there was no indication that there was more than one shooter. A bomb squad was at the scene, and police reported conducting a "controlled explosion."
Hours after the shooting, police were still trying to piece together what happened.
Orlando recently wrapped up its annual weeklong Gay Days festival on June 6 in which up to 150,000 in the LGBT community attend area theme parks, gay nightclubs and special events. It was the 25th anniversary of Gay Days. It remains one of the largest gay pride events in the world.
"Anyone who was at Pulse nightclub and was a witness Please come to the Orlando Police HQ," the department tweeted. "Any information you have could aid investigators in this case."
Club patron Christopher Hansen told CNN he heard what could have been 20 or 30 shots, setting off a panic as people scrambled for cover or raced for the exits. He said he helped a couple people who were wounded.
"It's just shocking," Hansen said. "I just saw bodies going down."
As the tragedy was unfolding, Pulse Orlando posted to its Facebook page: "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."
Rosie Feba, a witness, told the Orlando Sentinel she and her girlfriend were in the club near closing time when, "she told me someone was shooting. Everyone was getting on the floor. I told her I didn't think it was real, I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun."
Feba told the Sentinel she her girlfriend ran out of the club and helped a man who had been shot get outside.
The Orlando Fire Department called for its bomb squad and hazardous material team to the scene after 3 a.m. ET. Police K-9 dogs searched the area around nearby Orlando Regional Medical Center with an armed deputy in head-to-toe military gear.
A loud bang was heard before 5 a.m., but Orlando Police tweeted that it was the controlled explosion by law enforcement.
Ali Kurnaz, 25, told USA TODAY he was working in his living room about a block from the nightclub when he heard multiple gunshots from outside.
"I could hear multiple rounds of gunfire to the point where it scared my cats," Kurnaz said. "They came running from a different room."
Kurnaz said he heard sirens as multiple police cars headed to the crime scene and helicopters flying over his neighborhood.
In some tweets appearing to come from inside Pulse nightclub short after the assault, people said they were hiding.
Twitter users also said they heard multiple gunshots.

For every wounded person brought in there is supposed to be 4-5 trauma staff on hand to deal with their life support needs! SMH - just can't imagine the chaos - the terror - and thankfully this trauma hospital was right down the street, but still this is such a huge burden on staff and hospital resources.
So whether it's a 'Lone Wolf Terrorist' or a Religious Nut Job with vile hate against the LGBT community, the soft target was easy pickings for that cretin. Evil or Very Mad

The "terrorist" attacker, who shot dead 20 people in a gay nightclub in Orlando, has been named as Omar Mateen. Authorities are investigating whether the gunman, a 29-year-old US citizen of Afghan descent, had ties to Islamist extremism, according to US TV networks. The gunman, carrying a device thought to be a bomb and armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, opened fire in the Pulse Orlando bar in the early hours of Sunday morning before taking hostages. The attacker was involved with a three-hour stand-off with officers before SWAT teams stormed the building and shot him dead.
Speaking at a press conference after the attack, FBI Special Agent Ron Hopper said: "Unfortunately there are people who died from gunshot wounds, maybe around 20, inside the nightclub."

All the media feeds at the press conference with the local/state/federal officials are calling the a 'MASS CASULATY' and until they know for sure --- we do not know if this 29 year old 'lone wolf' was just a 'GAY HATER' or a 'Terrorist Wanna Be' ...but ALL of the officials are being very firm in their rhetoric - 'we do not know what this shooters intentions were - who might have been working with him - and until we do - we cannot say it was a terrorist plot'!!!
Pulse is more than 'just another gay bar'
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Sunday, June 12, 2016, 10:29 AM
Pulse is one of Orlando's most popular gay clubs and is known for hosting nightly themed performances and monthly LGBT-related educational events. The night of the mass shooting, Pulse was hosting a "Latin Night" during Pride Month.
Police are calling the terror attack a "mass casualty situation," in which 50 died and 53 were injured.

The 2 a.m. attack was "well organized and well prepared," according to local cops. The shooter, who was killed after a long standoff, was identified as Omar Sateen, 29, of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., which is about two hours south of Orlando.

Well I think its blatantly obvious it was a terrorist attack due to the fact he took along a  what is thought to be a bomb with him.
In your link states well organised.
I think its safe to say this was a terrrorist attack, even if it turns out he was a gay hater, as that would still mean striking terror into homosexuals by such an attack
What ever way you look at this, it was most probable a terrorist attack.

Fifty people are now known to have died in Saturday's shooting in a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and a "state of emergency" has been declared, the city's mayor Buddy Dyer has said.
The gunman, named by officials as Omar Mateen, was killed after taking hostages.
Another 53 people were injured in the shooting at the Pulse club.
It is the worst mass shooting in recent US history. Police described it as an act of terrorism.
Officials said the killings were likely to be ideologically motivated, though there was no information that the gunman was associated with a particular group.

Re: Slaughter in Florida

The gunman who killed 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando may have been motivated by homophobia, his father has told US media.
Details are beginning to emerge about the nightclub shooter, identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, who was shot dead after a three-hour stand-off with police.
:: Orlando Nightclub Shooting: 50 Dead, 53 Injured
Mateen, from Port St. Lucie in Florida, was an American citizen of Afghan descent.
He was married, is believed to have had one child and worked as a security officer.
One senior FBI official has said Mateen may have had leanings towards Islamic extremism and Islamic State.
However, other officials have cautioned that a Islamist motive requires further investigation.
Speaking to NBC News, Mateen's father Mir Seddique said he believed his son's actions were motived by homophobia.
"This had nothing to do with religion," he said.
He said his son recently lashed out in his presence after witnessing a gay couple embracing in downtown Miami.
"He saw two men kissing each other in front of his wife and kid and he got very angry," Mr Seddique said.
He added: "We are saying we are apologising for the whole incident.
"We are in shock like the whole country," he said.
US Congressman Alan Grayson told Sky News it is understood that Mateen made the two-hour journey from St. Lucie to Orlando in a van, before pulling up outside the Pulse nightclub.
"Apparently the only reason why he came to Orlando is because he wanted to go to that gay bar," Congressman Grayson said.
"He has no known local connection here at all."

I'm calling it the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States, carried out against the gay community in the middle of Pride Month, by a homophobic IS sympathizer whose ex-wife describes him as "not a stable person" who beat her.

Apparently, there was an unrelated 'but for' incident in Santa Monica, CA, at the LA GAY PRIDE event yesterday.

Acting on a tip, Federal and State authorities apprehended a heavily armed individual bent on the same type of mass murder. Details on CNN...very brief at this early date.

Criminals and terrorists will still get guns and countless other weapons/devices etc, regardless of any knee jerk 'ban hammer' proposals.

This terrorist was only stopped by opposing firepower... and then only after hours of killing and hostage situation when the police were able to get inside...

There is a clear argument being that if there were more guns inside the venue held by law abiding citizens/armed security etc, then this terrorist would have been dealt with much sooner and many lives would have been saved!

Okay unless I'm a bit behind but, why was there a "gun battle" outside the club? Why and how did the one suspect manage to get away from three police and how did he get in the club? Why didn't the police follow him inside the club?

Is it me or does that snippet, not make sense?

sure....bring in all the "gun control laws" you want

and ALL you will do is disarm law abiding citizens

there are SO MANY guns loose in america now it would be impossible to remove them ...

there is no proper registration of firearms ...so no one has a clue who owns what...so if you say "gun "x" " is no longer allowed...all that will happen is folks will hide em away....

the crims wont give a toss anyway....

and what about explosives and their precursors...easily ...much more so than here , available...

AND REMEMBER THIS......Frances strict gun laws DID NOT prevent their atrocity

even OUR stict knife laws didnt protect that soldier...or the guy on the tube.....

NOR did our even stricter explosives laws prevent 7/7

you CANNOT.....legislate against criminal action so as to prevent it....

the ONLY PEOPLE that laws affect are law abiding folk..........

Well, there's going to be a whole lot of unraveling of the events that started;
from point (a) to (z) when he was killed ...but only the murdering bastards knew his intent and his plan so the law enforcement wouldn't know his intentions to enter that club.

Can you see what the future for what those clubs are going to look like now: bouncers will not only be asking 'you' to 'ASSUME THE POSITION' for frisking but they'll have to have someone remain at the entrance while the club is open - not just walking the perimeter of the interior - looking for potential trouble!  Suspect

What I find so lame is the mantra of our gun violence numbers always being compared to other countries {like France} and then the rational is; 'well, look at what happened over there!'
WTH, right ...we lead the entire world in DEAD HUMANS due to gun violence and we have the most lax weapons laws that just keep allowing those knuckle-draggers {NRA enthusiasts} to dribble their ideology about our 'GUN LAWS' and the number of random acts of violence due to military grade weapons just keeps growing higher!
So a 'DO NOTHING MANTRA' is always the better plan instead of a 'DO SOMETHING' and change the rules/laws/enforcement/sales

Tommy wtf. We don't get gun massacres in Europe anywhere near as often and on nowhere near this scale. OF COURSE banning automatic weapons is the solution. Making them difficult to acquire would mean 50 people would not have been killed. Claiming arming more people is the solution is inane, that just means more opportunity for more avoidable gun related incidents.

People may be the killers. But guns makw it a damn sights easier and mean a lot more die before anyone can stop them.

Let's also be absolutely clear this attack was motivated by homophobia matched with religious extremism. Another factor fueled by rabid conservative ideology.

Okay unless I'm a bit behind but, why was there a "gun battle" outside the club? Why and how did the one suspect manage to get away from three police and how did he get in the club? Why didn't the police follow him inside the club?

Um...this was Florida. Maybe the thought it was Zimmerman.

Agree 100% Les. And with the kind of police presence they had here, those that didn't shoot each other (not knowing who's who), the cops would have nailed anyone left with a gun. Bar none! We'd have had 155 fatalities.

I DOUBT muchly that the spineless little grub Tommy has ever actually handled a real gun in his life, considering the kind of nonsense he regularly spouts...

TOMMY probably wouldn't even know which end to place in his mouth..

.
Idea          THE  NRA in America was established to protect gun owners "rights", and to allow and encourage responsible gun safety and ownership, and maintain shooting sports and hunting as supposedly part of their American "heritage"...
ALL GOOD stars 'n stripe and mom's apple pie patriotic guff, back in the good ol' days..

OVER the years it was gradually taken over by a consortium of the 6 largest gun manufacturers in the USA, led by the likes of Colt and Winchester --  and whose main aim is to protect their "right" to sell as many weapons as they can, rather than any minor issues like community rights to protection, nor any of those pesky individual human rights malarky..         Neutral

AND TO help their cause the new "owners" of the NRA move further to the right, encouraging the gun nut, anti-gov't, and constitutional rights wanks to have more of a voice, and giving them such nonsenses as "Those tighter gun laws in Australia and Britain give them higher gun death rates than here !", and "More people carrying guns means more chance of stopping the bad guys !"

EVEN though people know that those ideas are outright lies, the NRA regularly gets away with spreading rumours, by making sure that it's not official, and that it's only regular nutbag members spouting their lies..

You only need to read parts of their forums (where the moderators do allow their critics to address the gunnuts -- as long as it's kept civil. It's the RW "open carry" nutters that they allow to run rabid..).

THE NRA only has just over 4 million members - that's only around 1.3 % of the USA's population, or less than 2% of their eligible voting population..       But they carry a lot, lot more political influence then their low numbers should allow them --  simply because clusters of gun nuts in certain locales, like Florida, means that a few Republican, and a handful of Democrat, Congressmen and Senators are beholden to their gunhappy constituents -- and often work to blocking, watering-down and trading-off any prospective laws that get up the NRA's collective noses..

THE creation of those extreme whackjob schism groups like 'Concealed Carry' and 'Open Carry' in recent years only shows us that those more extreme nutters consider the mainstream NRA majority to be too soft and namby-pamby for their imagined rights to shoot anyone they don't like the looks of...          Suspect

NOPE, I don't own a gun, nicko; (although, I do I do own three bows..).
NOT because I'm "anti-guns" (which I'm not..), but because I simply have no need for one..

IF and when I move out to a rural atea, I could easily justify having 3 or 4 rifles (something light like a .22 or .222 for rabbits and foxes, something larger like a .308 or a 30-06 for pigs and euthanising livestock, and a faithful and versatile ol' 12 gauge shotgun..).

I learnt to handle guns safely, fieldstrip a rifle, a sub-machine gun, and a Browning 9mm, and use them, back in my Army Reserve days in the 1980s.

I DID have a shooters licence back in the late '70s and early '80s, but let it lapse in the 1980s as I wasn't using it.. (A bit of a minor mistake, that -- as to renew my licence now, I would have to join a l9cal gun club, and do a firearms safety course.. What a Face ).

I see people are missing the point again and blaming guns, which people are always going to be able to lay their hands on and not anyone is questioning why he murdered so many homosexuals. His father straight away plays the not in the name of religion card, but was no doubt instrunmental in how this boy grew up hating homosexuals of which nobody is questioning. I mean does it not strike you how quick the father was to respond to shift blame and claim homophobia? When already he has been known to the FBI and his views on terrorism and extremism?

How often are people failing to see the hate formulated by religion and I bet very much this wanker was brought up hating homosexuality as is taught within Islam and all the Abrahamic faiths. At least many Jews and Christians have progressed but clarly again we see within Islam those who simply are unable to live peacefully side by side with those who are in love. Again no fear he would die himself and why? The control of fear itself formulatd over years of religious bullshit he was no doubt brought up on, that values death over life. Guns are just the means to carry out the attack, they were not what caused the attack.

Radical Islam tends to glorify the hatred and intolerance of others, creating a kind of twisted glamour that these idiots take for real. No doubt he had fantasies about being a 'someone' like those idiots who pretend they're SAS.

Okay wolf if you can't seem to reply like an adult and with some decorum, then perhaps you need to spend some time in the basement?

Stop with the stupid name-calling! If you don't like Tommy then you have a choice:
Put him on ignore
Don't reply
Make a little voodoo dolly and play with that.

DON'T keep on attacking everything his says with remarks like the one you made, above. You're not funny and you don't even sound like a grown-up. Rolling Eyes

Stop it.

I have shot a variety of weapons... including a 9mm semi automatic, 12 gauge pump action shotgun and a 44 magnum...

If armed security had been inside then he would have been taken out much sooner saving countless lives and injuries.

Criminals and terrorists will get guns or any other weapons... banning guns from law abiding people just makes them less safe, more vulnerable and even more at the mercy of criminals/terrorists.

Yes wolf. You make lots of sense with that post.
I'm all of those things because I asked you to act more politely toward another member.

Grow up. You really don't act like a man of a certain age at all. You're really immature!

I'm asking you to stop with the crap now, or I lock the thread.
